The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 http://www.sportsnet.ca/baseball/mlb/mlb-execs-time-to-consider-later-deadline/ Some MLB execs were polled about whether they think the trade deadline should be pushed back a couple weeks to mid-August. 14 out of the 21 that gave their opinion thought that it should be changed. Me, I think it should stay right where it's at. It's around the 2/3 mark for the season. There's always the Waiver-deadline to make deals if you want to tweek your team a little. What do you think is the chance that they actually go forward with this and change it in the near future?

What do you think is the chance that they actually go forward with this and change it in the near future? It might be a nice complement to the second wild card... At the current deadline almost every team thinks they have a shot at the second WC spot at least, so there aren't many sellers. Maybe by a later date some GMs will come to grips with reality and trade off their 40 something left handed relievers on the brink of retirement...

Save Dtieb Verified Member Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Agreed. With the second wild-card in place, mid-august would make sense.
HERPDERP Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Didn't read article but... A later deadline results in teams truly falling under buyers/sellers, as opposed to the current system where everyone is a seller due to the 2nd wildcard. So that's good in terms of the frequency of transactions. However, how about the quality? With a later deadline, you have a player for a shorter period of time. Will this affect the buyer's willingness to send a huge chunk of talent for possibly only 1 month of play? Should it even be a consideration, since the goal is to win the WS?
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 This is a great idea- the further back you go the more definitive it is that you are a buyer or seller. Like you guys said with the second wild card a lot of teams are still "sort of" in it at the end of July. I wonder if it has a chance of happening?
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Well you're adding two or three definitive sellers and also two or three teams who should be buying. This is cherrypicking but for example maybe in a week the Cards find out Molina's injury is a bit worse than expected so they become more desperate for a catcher. I agree it wouldn't change tons but it would at least do something IMO.

This is an interesting point, having a player for only 1 month as opposed to 2 months of regular season play. But you could argue that the injury risk is lower. Most contending teams are adding pieces at the deadline for a run in October, rather than August. To state the obvious, the Red Sox would rather have Peavy get injured in August for the White Sox, than for themselves.
reedjohnsonfan Verified Member Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Ok catchers are a bad example. If Cruz gets suspended Texas would be more likely to push for a guy like Rios- that would be a fairly big trade for them. All I'm saying is that it increases the odds of big trades happening. I don't really see any significant drawbacks from extending it 2 weeks or so, do you?
P2F Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Don't care Not a good enough topic for a poll?
Kelly Gruber Verified Member Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Agreed. With the second wild-card in place, mid-august would make sense. I already think it is amazing teams give up as much as they do in prospects for only 2 months of games for the player they pick up. I have always found it odd how in the past teams seem to be able to get pretty much the same package in July as they could have at the start of the season. Pushing the date back to mid-August is positive in the sense of establishing who is out of the race, but we might see less trades and/or people basically given away for next to free, as any return is better than letting them go to free agency.
Howard Roark Verified Member Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 I have a hard time giving so much as one-tenth of a f*** either way. But here is my fantasy wish-list for MLB changes.......... -Knock it off with this foolishness of having home field in the WS being determined by a f***ing exhibition contest between fantasy teams. -All playoff series 7 games, limited off-nights between games so we stop seeing these 3-man playoff rotations. -Top 6 teams from each league make the playoffs with each division winner guaranteed one of those spots, first-round byes to the top-2 teams from each league.
TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 I love August trades and some of these have been the best in history. Leave the deadline and let good GM's make their moves in August. Some August trades off hand: Bautista to Toronto Canseco to Texas for Sierra, Russell and Bobby Witt (making an August 31st trade when you have a 7 game lead still doesn't make sense and was ballsy for sure but they got three contributing players for one declining one) Walker to the Cards...they fell short in the WS, but it wasn't due to Walker's efforts. Cone to the Jays Bagwell for Larry Anderson
TheHurl Site Manager Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 Guess you could include the Dodgers and Red Sox trade from last year too
Dick_Pole Old-Timey Member Posted August 2, 2013 Posted August 2, 2013 David Cone was traded in late August to the Jays. The Jays were one of the top ranked teams (meaning bottom of the waiver hierarchy) and they still got done what they needed to do. For his two months of service, he assisted in the team winning the World Series, and to get his services, the Jays gave up the best prospect/young player they've ever had to give up in any of these types of deals in Jeff Kent. That little bit of anecdotal evidence pretty much pisses on everything discussed in this thread. From the usefulness of delaying the deadline (when the waiver wire deadline still exists) to the value of trading for a rental so late in the season.
KSaw Verified Member Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 There were more buyers than ever the past two years and still the sellers could move players. I'm not sure that moving the deadline later would help. If anything I would think that it would create more sellers and fewer buyers. Removing compensation for players traded for mid-season has killed the trade action more than anything if you ask me. You want more trades? Have a second supplemental round before round 2. Teams would get compensation in S2 for losing a qualified player who was acquired during the season. I'd figure more trades.
Save Dtieb Verified Member Posted August 4, 2013 Posted August 4, 2013 I'd remove the competitive balance rounds, and just make rounds 2 through 5 tradeable. Or something like that. You'd have to think contenders would be more inclined to trade draft picks, than teams receiving competitive balance picks. Would the Braves trade a 3rd or 4th round pick for Bonifacio? I'd think they would.
