torontofan Verified Member Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 You mean the pitching framing studies that say JPA is a very good pitch framer? If you are taking about the article by mop-up duty that used 1.5 months of data and didn't explain their evaluation method then sure.
Arkadium Verified Member Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 There are no bounds to what scouts think they know. My favourite was: OMG Rasmus is one of the best hitters in all of baseball!! Lets underutilize him by batting 3rd!! Idiot. Rasmus has ONE really good month and three OK months. He's not an elite hitter yet lolz. Also he moved up in the box sometime in the middle of last year and he was absolutely awful after.
digiblader Verified Member Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 Indy, Charlotte and New Orleans are AAA cities. Basically, it's either Montreal or they build a new stadium in Tampa. The reason is due to the fact at least Montreal has a temporary facility in Olympic Stadium while they build a new ballpark, similar to what RFK Stadium was to the Nats when they were building Nationals Park. None of those "front-running" cities are likely to get an MLB team--they don't have a decent stadiums or any new stadiums in the plans to get an MLB team. In addition, Charlotte has attendance issues with their MiLB team. And their new stadium coming won't be big enough to support an MLB team.
Arkadium Verified Member Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 2. Arencibia- "At this point only Doumit is worse but barely. Can't see him in the Majors next year unless someone is really stupid!" Also Doumit is WAAAAAAY f***ing better than JPA... In every aspect of the game except hitting dingers. Plus he's not even an everyday catcher... wtf

This. Plus Montreal has plenty of corporate support and a history as a strong baseball market until the players' union and MLB sabotaged the franchise for their own purposes. For the record, it's stunning how Selig never gets criticized for how he f***ed over the 2003 Expos and more-or-less deliberately rigged a wildcard race by banning them from calling up players from the minors in September. He didn't want to risk the Expos making the playoffs because it might have sunk his "contraction or relocation" plan.

Yip that's the one. But just observing. He's ok at pitch framing... gotten better. Not a terrible defender, but below average.... I would assume a way below average arm.
Caper Verified Member Posted July 28, 2013 Posted July 28, 2013 Quebec should see if they can extort some more cash from Alberta to build a downtown stadium.

I loved the Expos but they just didn't get enough support . Be like moving from the frying pan to the fire . BTW You are always saying your going to hope for another team .

Answer- next to no chance! San Antonio also got mention btw. I meant to include the city. I simply forgot.

FireAlexAnthopoulos Verified Member Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 Montreal will never get another team . I loved the Expos but they just didn't get enough support . They had plenty of support until the players' strike ruined the Expos' best season ever and the MLB sabotaged the franchise for profit. It's not hard to see why the fans stopped showing up when they were essentially banned from the playoffs in 2003, played a sizeable amount of their "home games" in freaking San Juan, and it was made clear that the Expos were going to be contracted or relocated by 2005. If the Rays moved to Montreal, I have no doubt they would be successful. Montreal is a historic baseball market (not only for the Expos but also because Jackie Robinson played there), and the Rays would be making legit money for the first time ever - and Friedman with money is a scary thought.

But why would anyone bother? They could move into the Alamo Dome tomorrow! They'd top 4 million fans easy and with prices well above what they'd charge in Montreal. The city owns the stadium and there's really no full time tenant other than b-league junk. They host 2 bowl games as well. That's basically it. The Rangers played the Padres there recently and all they'd really need to do for full time baseball is spend around $2.5 million or so to turn sections 136-138 into a promenade which would move the right field fence back around 40 feet. It could be ready to go by opening day 2014. New Orleans is game ready within weeks if they wanted and without any major renos. It's not that Montreal couldn't support baseball with a new downtown ballpark. It's that there are better options.

Laika Community Moderator Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 No, he isn't. Ryan Doumit is really f***ing bad. Sent from my HTC One using Tapatalk 2 Doumit is an infinitely better hitter than JPA, and only possibly a worse defender behind the plate.... but even then we would be talking worst in baseball vs. second worst in baseball. Last 3 years: link The "Fans Scouting Report" gives them both overall grades of 31.

There was so much more to it than the strike. Attendance dropped big time in the Early 80's and had a small recovery in 89 and 90 to 92 there still wasn't interest (buzz) for the Spos. Their radio broadcasts were moved around from station to station and in 2000 they didn't even have an English station (games were broadcast on Expos.com) and the station playing it was barely received in the outskirts of Montreal. There were points where the team had this insistence that they had to get more of the French audience so the English was somewhat ignored. There was little corporate or municipal support as well. If the Rays moved to Montreal, I have no doubt they would be successful. Montreal is a historic baseball market (not only for the Expos but also because Jackie Robinson played there), and the Rays would be making legit money for the first time ever - and Friedman with money is a scary thought. I think Brooklyn wins out in the history aspect. I loved the Spos but even when I would travel down there for a week in those early 90's years I'd be able to sit where I wanted, the counted attendance back then was tickets sold, there were weeknights where it was under 5K there. The fans that were there have always been incredibly passionate, but it was never the place to be in Montreal.
TheEndIsNigh Verified Member Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 I think I could swallow that pill. I would not be able to resist a Friedman-built team an hour and a half from where I live. Pretty pathetic Jays fan you are.

You can thank scumbag Jeff Loria for that, he was too cheap to come to terms on an English-language contract. Loria also couldn't get a stadium deal done - which is probably a good thing in hindsight considering the scam he just pulled in Miami.
