I can understand why someone with an audience would want to avoid a completely indicting position (such as "AA sucks" or "Fire AA/Beeston"). There's a lot of downside for someone like Stoeten to wear a position like that on their sleeve, and really, what's the upside? A few of us nerds read his s*** more often? Whoop-dee-f***ing-doo.

 

Putting the flurry of moves back in context, anyone with half a brain realized that they were terribly inefficient moves at the time. Most wise fans were still excited though, since the team should have finally been good. And, believe in the reasons or not, there were/are some fairly legitimate sounding defenses of the moves, mostly surrounding the Blue Jays weird situation of not being able to attract free agents, and having a corporate owner that was pushing for timely success/growth.

Pretty soon, he'll have been a jackass to basically everybody. This is Wilner all over again. At first Wilner was fun because he mostly made sense and only tore into really reactionary fans but as the quality of his callers increased, the discourse stayed the same and he kept making a bigger and bigger ass of himself. Is there anyone left here who still listens to his show? The DJF readership has already decreased a lot and it's only going to get worse if Stoeten keeps deliberately antagonizing those who read and comment on his blog.

1. I get that, but if you're going to take the time to respond you're then fair game to be criticized for the quality of that response. Stoeten has on multiple occasions responded to people who disagree with his writing. Those responses have typically been completely dismissive, arrogant, and devoid of logic. Criticizing him for that is absolutely fair.

 

2. Don't get me wrong, I'm all for acting like a jackass to people making illogical arguments. When I was on the same page as Stoeten his stance didn't bother me because any criticism of AA's work through the first 1-2 years of his tenure was illogical - that body of work was legitimately impressive and calling it into question at the time would have been very difficult to do. The issue is that he's maintained that same dismissive attitude as evidence to the contrary has continued to mount and is now at least as significant as the evidence that AA has been a good GM. Where previously there was little room for debate, there is now a pretty convincing argument to be made that we were wrong about AA, and Stoeten is acting like there isn't. That's the issue.

What I don't like about DJF is they try to act like Blue Jays fans or fans in general don't now anything about anything. That they have to show us all how it really is. They're staunchly contrarian to the point of self-contradiction. They also often create a "strawman" positions to every issue, ascribe it to the fans at large, then handily destroy said "strawman" arguments that most knowledgeable fans don't support to begin with. Their condescension borders on grandiosity.

 

Particularly when it comes to the draft or to IFA or prospects. They act as though none of us know anything about these prospects until the day of the draft or until the newspaper writes about them. If someone claims they wan't this prospect or don't want that prospect their response is almost always: "Fans are freaking out about players that they hadn't even heard of until a week ago." Get off your high horse for goodness sake. I'd say a good amount of the Blue Jays fan base (and by this I mean the die hards and internet crowd) know a lot more about these things than those guys give them credit for.

That's basically all Stoeten. Hardly anyone else writes for the blog anymore and the ones who do just do game summaries. Despite his reputation as a douche, Dustin Parkes was by far the site's best writer and at least when he would provoke the fans he would do so with his tongue in his cheek and a good sense of humour. He's moved on to other things. Stoeten can be really entertaining on podcasts and stuff when he's not s***ing on his readership but his writing is indeed full of ambivalence and condescension and he's rarely funny anymore.

Couldn't agree more, Parkes is great. And I find he has a much deeper understanding of the game than Stoeten or Drew.

 

Drew is pretty sharp and he used to dig into the numbers a lot but he seems to have taken on a kind of willful naivety lately. He just assumes that he's not qualified to have an opinion on what front offices are doing because he doesn't have access to their knowledge. That's a perfectly reasonable position but it's kind of a dead end for a baseball writer. The answer he gave me on DJF though thoughtful and respectful was little more than a smokescreen. Saying that players are human beings and not poker chips is pretty facile and doesn't really counter any argument I made.

The thing I find hilarious is, Jays fans who for years wanted this "all-in" veteran team we have now. Old team, past their prime, cost a f***ing fortune with little financial flexibility (not their money). But for years also bashed the Yankees, Sox & Phillies for doing the exact same thing.

I will say that most on this board would not have moved all that talent from the farm . I certainly wouldn't have but we certainly don't know what pressures or circumstances AA was facing . I couldn't have my cake and eat it too . Money was there (Pushed on AA by management/ownership) and to me it was obvious AA couldn't get free agents to sign here .

Then add the perfect storm that had the AL east up for grabs and our own aging stars .

 

Me I hope this is like the Dodgers situation where the team didn't gel until the next year and even then not at the start then went on an unbelievable run that is still going . I expect the offense to be solid next year , BP should be a strength so shore up the rotation and improve the defense .

 

Biggest disappointment other than the starters has been the terrible defense . Melky has been a disaster , Boni and Micer can't play even passable defense on turf and No need to say what we have got behind the plate '

 

AA knows what the team needs and has already said we have the cash. Health would go a long way to filling those needs
