ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 I'm now hoping for a 2012 type 2nd half to increase the chances of a house cleaning and a higher draft pick for a new regime. Hopefully they'll hire a president who's a baseball man instead of a gong show buffoon.

Seattle is up 10-0 on Houston right now. Mets won 5-0. The best thing for the franchise would be to get a top 5 pick. No. That is not going to happen. The draft picks the next 3 years will be 2014 - 14th overall 2015 - 15th overall (lost in desparate attempt to sign free agent). 2016 - 11th overall The new regime will have an 11th to work with in 2016. But there will be absolutely zero farm system as it is all given away for 79, 80 and 73 wins. At the end, when AA and Beeston are desperate they will even lose a pick in a futile free agent acquisition.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 I'm in. Let's get a top 5 pick. Black Sox strategy?
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 I'm in. Let's get a top 5 pick. With the 5th pick of the 2014 draft, the Toronto Blue Jays select Bust Adams.
havok24 Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 With the 5th pick of the 2014 draft, the Toronto Blue Jays select Bust Adams. lol sounds about right.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 What grade 12 pimply faced, injury prone pitcher will the Jays pick next year?
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 I'm in. Let's get a top 5 pick. What are we going to do with it? We have effectively shown that we can't draft nor that we want to keep our prospects and I'm sure our development is trash too
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 21, 2013 Author Posted July 21, 2013 What are we going to do with it? Tough-sign high school pitcher.... duh.
fatcowxlive Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 Tough-sign high school pitcher.... duh. Yeah! Easy sign players are for pussies
theblujay Verified Member Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 Realistically I think we can get to 5th, maybe 4th. We play a whole lot of games vs. the AL East which should help.
pewpewpewjays Verified Member Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 Why couldn't I have tried to look at things this way! back in contention now going for dat 1st draft pick. should be a piece of cake if players are left alone and the farm system keeps doing what it does best!
Howard Roark Verified Member Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 Realistically I'd think 4th is the best we could do, and even that would be tough. That's fine though, this isn't the NBA/NHL.
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 No tanking only winning. You guys honestly want to see 12k fans in the stands again. That shits depressing. Draft is a crapshoot. Look at top 100 prospect lists and many of those players were not drafted in the first round. I think you may end up with 12K fans in the stands anyway with the way they're playing. The offseason trades created hype that helped them sell lots of tickets and interest, but once people see that the product is crap, they won't go back and will actually become skeptical and wary of any future attempts at getting them back into the stands.

We need to lose not only for the high pick, but so that we get some changes and the FO realizes that we aren't very good. Also we need as high of a pick as we can get with to give AA and co. less chance to mess up the pick. We should shut Morrow down for the year so he doesn't come in a ruin our chances at a top pick.

I take the completed opposite stance. This team needs to show something down the stretch to keep any kind of optimism into 2014. When expectations are high and a team fails miserably, apathy can set in very fast. The simple fact that this team has a hard on for taking high school pitchers who slide due to injury or who are rumoured to be incredibly hard signs should be all anyone needs to know to realize that more picks isn't necessarily a good thing.
eastcoastjaysfan Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 They'll win just enough to settle into that familiar, comfy 12-15 range.
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Tanking doesn't really work, the players don't have any incentive to, they want to pad their stats for contracts, and don't care about the team in 5+ years. Well, and they actually have some pride

TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 we all know they are going to win their last 15 games to finish in 14th place.
Howard Roark Verified Member Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 we all know they are going to win their last 15 games to finish in 14th place. Yeah, watch them have a sizzling September when all the pressure's off and it no longer matters.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 22, 2013 Author Posted July 22, 2013 Fangraphs' updated projected standings predict that Toronto will go 80-82. Tied for 13th last with the Phillies.
Orgfiller Old-Timey Member Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 I don't really agree with tanking, this isn't the NBA where a top 5 pick can immediately come in and be an impact player, the closest being Strasburg or Harper types of players that are ready to come up to the bigs in less than a year, plus let's face it we're not even bad enough to make it to top 5. Can you still lose your pick by signing a type A FA unless your pick is in the top 10? If anything that's the only thing I might worry about being that there will be some good FA choices out there this year.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 You can't really tank in baseball. None of the players are going to mess up their stat lines to get this team a better pick, there is no incentive for them to do it. The only way it happens is if AA starts trading off our best players and that clearly isn't going to happen.

Maybe AA should tell them to tank by not swinging for the fences, they might actually realize that it will help them
