Theo has actually been doing pretty well down in Chicago.

Not a surprise. He will probably get that team in to the playoffs within 2-3 years.

What leverage do the Cubs really have? Sure it's THE top pitcher on the trade market right now but if they don't move him...they'll lose him and get nothing (or close to nothing). Jacking up the asking price if you want to is fine, but if you look around it doesn't sound like there are as many buyers as it's being made out to be - willing to (or can come close to) the demands.

s*** man, let's go get Peavy and Weeks be done with it.

Theo did pretty ok on Boston too.

Agreed, but there was defs a 'the bloom was off the rose' feels when he was on the way out and that he was overrated.

Not if some other team trades for him before the deadline, which is almost a certainty at this point.

Yep. Great point.

That's best case for us:

Garza traded to Texas this week

We sign him as FA this off season and don't lose a draft pick

I feel like Texas would re-sign Garza if he pitches well down the stretch for them. Best-case is probably the Indians or Orioles trading for him.

But the even better case is us getting Peavy instead.

Yeah also a good point. Rangers might have best chance of hanging on to him.

Its so tough to even have an opinion on Garza/Peavy until we know a) What is payroll going to look like next year, and B) What is JJ going to do with his QO? Our current roster + JJ will cost about $150 million. Our current roster + Peavy about 165. That's an increase of 30-45 million. And we have very little fat to cut to make room.

Buehrle will be gone one way or another before next year.

Possible

Depends on Hutch, Morrow, Romero, Drabek

This is such a mess I don't know what to do about the starting rotation

Catcher is easy to address this off season - lots of good free agents

2B and SP is very tough

Huh? How do you figure we'll shed that bloated contract? We'd have to eat money to trade him for nothing.

I would bet against that. I don't think there is any chance he is gone.

Why would we sign a free agent catcher? JP is one of the greatest catchers in baseball!!

On a serious note, hopefully Lawrie sticks at 2B. It will be much easier to find a good third baseman.

Buehrle will be 35 next year, owed $37 million over two seasons, and currently has a 4.89 ERA. We'd have to pay someone to take him.

Yup. Paying someone to the point where it would probably not even make sense to trade him. He is costly, but his innings are still valuable at the back end of the rotation.

I'm okay with having a guy like Buerhle as the #5 starter. He's overpriced for it but the real problem is the Jays don't have 4 other pitchers that have been consistently better than him.

Imagine we trade for Garza and extend and then JJ accepts the QO.

Dickey

Garza

JJ

Morrow

MB

Swing: Rogers

With depth of:

Happ

Hutch

Stroman

Nolin

Romero

and Bautista old, Lind sucking, JPA as a C and not farm system

Just to play devil's advocate ...

A quick look at the Buehrle rumours news feed at MLBTR shows that he's had plenty of interest since leaving the White Sox, even while a Marlin (with this contract). He's a recognisable name in MLB, as durable as an ox, has the experience GMs seem to value, and his numbers -- which aren't that awful -- could only improve in another division. I wouldn't bet against a PTBNL-salary dump trade.

JJ and Morrow will just hit the DL again

He'll probably be easier to move in the off season. A guy like him is more valuable over a full season, where you can squeeze those 200 innings out of him.

Hard to say. Floor is low, ceiling is high. It's more of a high risk, high reward rotation.

Do you remember what happened the last time jays and rangers got in a bidding war over a player? Same thing will happen this time

My guess is that AA was all over him after the 11 game win streak, but has since decided not to pursue. Our playoff chances have been cut to zero since then and he knows it.

AA went on TSN Radio (lol avoided the fan) and said he hasn't had one discussion with a team about a starter.

He must have had his phone privileges taken away.

I've pretty much lost all faith in Morrow.

FFS I just bought your freaking jersey man. Can't you at least have a good season or two? WHY

Most likely he's telling a flat out lie and we all know it or he's completely incompetant.

Strong Interest In Michael Young

by Tim Dierkes, Jul 16 at 7:38 AM CST

"Intense trade interest" in infielder Michael Young might compel the Phillies to trade him despite indications the team doesn't plan to sell, writes Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. He says the Red Sox and Yankees are among about a dozen teams that have checked in on Young.

I still think Young, a 36-year-old hitting .288/.344/.414, would bring a modest return. Rosenthal says the Phillies have no obvious internal replacement for him, though I wonder if utility man Kevin Frandsen is capable of delivering similar production in a regular role. The Phillies are currently 5.5 games out in the wild card, and seek a center fielder and bullpen help.
