Ah crap, this brings stability to the Red Sox pen

All he's doing is replacing Andrew Miller--and he's a downgrade regardless (0-3, 4.00 ERA, 6.8 K/9 IP, 1.25 WHIP).

Brandon Jacobs was Boston #11 prospect according to MLB.com:

Scouting Grades* (present/future): Hit: 3/5 | Power: 4/6 | Run: 5/5 | Arm: 4/4 | Field: 5/5 | Overall: 4/5

When the Red Sox went over slot to sign Jacobs away from a football scholarship, they likely knew it would take some time to put his considerable raw tools to consistent use on the baseball field. It looked like he had figured some things out with his first taste of full-season ball when he hit over .300 and slugged over .500 while stealing 30 bases. Perhaps the 123/43 K/BB ratio should have been a warning, but the move up to the Carolina League wasn't as kind for Jacobs. He still showed some extra-base power and stole some bases, but once again struggled with plate discipline (128/39 K/BB). That's not allowing him to tap into that raw power consistently enough. If he can control the strike zone more and become more efficient, it's all still there for him to be an impact bat playing an outfield corner.

Solid move for the Red Sox. It's sad to think they may very well have a better GM.

This guy's not a winner; sub .500 record are you serious? Proven winners win championships.

They had a better core in place though, it's Theo's acquisitions leading the charge.

Sure, but he wasn't the one who rid that team of all those contracts and put them in a position to be a force for quite some time.

Just a small upgrade IMO. You're talking an older, bandaid RP with declining peripherals and he's needing to rely more on his offspeed stuff than his more hittable, slowing fastball.

IMO Jacobs is what Kalish was suppose to be, but slightly less talented.

Cherington has had a fair share of questionable moves though. Correct me if I'm wrong but weren't trades like the Lowrie and Reddick ones considered pretty bad? Also there's the fact that he traded a decent utility guy for a manager.

I agree, nothing spectacular, but it was a solid move for that team in terms of needs. That being said, I was just trying to rile up the casuals.

A manager that has the best record in the division.

True, but although managers do play somewhat of a role they have a good core like it was already mentioned, in my personal opinion I never like trading a manager for a player since you can just sign the manager and keep the player, I might understand just giving up some random never-will-make-it player but to give away a utility man like Aviles might be too much IMO.

Under your name it says: "Location: Havana, Cuba"

I wasn't questioning that part, you do realize that Yunel doesn't live in Cuba? Or for that matter has to request a bunch of permits just to visit.

The Red Sox paid for Farrell no question about it, but they also have the results. It's sad to say, but they are in great shape moving forward.

The Dodgers trade was huge for them.

It was. They can now breath easy and have some flexibility moving forward.

Yeah it is unfortunate but looking like it. I also agree about the Dodgers deal being really helpful to their payroll flexibility so kudos to him on that.

I hope AA can learn from that. If he can rid us of some contracts moving forward this team could be primed for a run over the next few years. Right now I would look to move Janssen. He could save this team $4M next season and at the same time get us a soild return. Oliver should be able to net us a B prospect. Boni, Izturis, just try to give these guys away. Look into moving Lind if possible, someone may bite based on his overall numbers and that could save $2M for the buyout which is a sunk cost.

Not a lot of money with those guys, but enough to at least clear some room on the roster and save a bit.

Should AA trade a few bullpen guys?

Absolutely

We have too many, especially with Sergio "60 Day" Santos coming back

Depending whether they resign Ellsbury and the team stays healthy--and they need more bullpen help. No way they're going deep in the postseason with that bullpen(and rotation outside of Lackey and Buchholz)

You do realize Boston was contedning at the All Star Break last year--most of their problems were caused by David Ortiz's injury. He is important to them contending.

Good thing--they have to give new contracts to Pedroia(likely to be very expensive, depending what Cano gets), Ellsbury and Lester. They also have rotation holes to fill down the road when Dempster, Lester and Lackey become free agents after 2014-2015, depending on the development of Webster, De La Rosa, Workman, Barnes, etc.

They also need to find a closer--Uehara is a stopgap, and Bailey's still uncertain.

The Chisox win this deal hands down in the long run, but the Bosox still come out with gravy, in a year they're contending,

It's good when trades give each team what they need.
