flafson Verified Member Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 Yea i know but i was sure he's a Spanish guy so was shocked to listen to his English. Then i remembered that Puerto Rico belongs to the US. At least we know he can communicate with the pitchers.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 (edited) To be honest I've been shocked all year by the hype good posters are giving guys like Jiminez and Pillar. Jiminez will max out as a backup C and Pillar as a 4th OF. They aren't even really relevant. Pillar and Jimenez may have similar offensive upside but you can't lump the outfielder with the catcher with plus defense. Look at the catchers in the MLB right now. It's a wasteland as far as offensive production is concerned. The fact is Jimenez doesn't have to hit that much for the glove to play. He's the system's only legit position prospect (unless you want to wishcast on a teenager). Does this make him elite? Hardly because the system is a wasteland but that's still no reason to lump him in with sub-prospect position players. Edited July 17, 2013 by KingKat
TheHurl Site Manager Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 The bad thing about Jimenez is that he's burned one option already, he'll certainly burn one more next year, which is also when he'll probably get his first look at the majors (by September as a worst case scenario). It probably gives him 2015 to prove he can stick in the majors. Not a great scenario for him unless he tears apart the minors and also hits in his MLB opportunities. A guy like Yan Gomes is putting up 1.3 fWAR through 140 AB's, to say that Jimenez is a non factor is a mistake, people get too wrapped up in upside sometimes, Jimenez doesn't have much but he can be steady. Doubt he'll ever get a chance in Toronto though.

KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 The bad thing about Jimenez is that he's burned one option already. Did he burn an option by virtue of being added to the 40 man (he doesn't have any actual MLB time)?
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 I wish people would stop using Gomes aspect kind of benchmark or comparison. He had one decent stretch of 50 PA ths year, the rest as been garbage Nd over his last 17 games he has like a .400 OPS He's nothing to worry about having traded, especially with how Rogers has worked out so far. The shirty part of that trade was Aviles
