Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 If needed usually means if we are in contention. We are clearly not. Well this team will clearly be making another run for next season, so I highly doubt their isn't payroll flexibility for the coming winter.
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 I agree, I think there is probably some more room. How much I'm not sure. Regardless, I don't think what happens with this one particular Cuban pitcher is going to tell us how much this team will have to spend. Yeah, one player isn't going to tell us that, especially if the interest isn't there.
Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted July 16, 2013 Posted July 16, 2013 Put it this way. They sign Gonzalez, the fans all say "who the f*** is this guy?" But If they sign someone like Halladay (a big name) the fans scream "Holy s***!!! Roy Halladay!!!! Jays are going all the way this year!!!" Wow you really think that little of the fat greek to think he will sign a over the hill 36 old year pitcher over a guy who is 10 years younger. At this point he better be thinking f*** the casuals and make this team better by all means necessary

He started by trading away Halladay, followed by other franchise faces like Wells, Hill and McDonald. Given the enormous range of chaff we've seen over the last few years, from Fred Lewis to Jayson Nix, it's fair to say he has always done things his own way. Halladay wanted out (AA just made it happen) Wells trade was magic Hill/ Kelly Johnson trade was a challenge trade and the jays lost that. If he really was smart, trading bautista and Janssen at their peak values would be amazing. Jose following the 2011 season and Janssen following the 2012 season. Adam lind should be gone before the completion of the non waiver trade deadline.

I am saying that it's a little silly to suggest that there has been pandering to the casual fans when clearly it has been years of rebuilding.
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 (edited) I believe Kiksaw posted about this a few days ago.....you're slow Angelo, or was it just because he's Cuban? Haha. I actually reported it 7 hours before he pitched and reported here, on FB and in Twitter and it got re-reported a fair bit. I had the advantage of knowing that they had borded a plane to San Diego from Pearson around noon. It was on a day when the Padres were on the road at Miami and with the kid pitching in Tijuana the same evening. It was simply too logical and obvious as to where they were going and why. Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2013 Author Posted July 18, 2013 Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez Could Sign Next Week The market is taking shape for Cuban pitcher Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez and the right-hander could sign with a club as early as next week, an industry source tells MLB.com's Jesse Sanchez. While teams are working the phones vigorously to land an impact pitcher before the July 31st deadline, Gonzalez could provide a boost to a contender without giving up anything other than money. Scouts believe Gonzalez needs only a few starts in the minors before making his MLB debut and his addition could move the needle as much as finding an arm via trade. The Cubs, Dodgers, Rangers, and Red Sox are among the clubs that have expressed serious interest in signing the 26-year-old hurler while the Phillies, Blue Jays, and Braves are also in the hunt. Gonzalez, who was cleared to sign with an MLB team earlier this week, could get as much as $60MM over five years. Muerete AA
Chappy Community Moderator Posted July 18, 2013 Posted July 18, 2013 f*** it, AA go get this guy. This team is already a mess, lets see if we can at least get a potentially big arm without giving up more assets.

Knowing the Jays luck, this is the time they'd get aggressive, win the bidding war and have the guy blow out his shoulder in his first game.

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 18, 2013 Author Posted July 18, 2013 Cuban Pitcher Misael Siverio Defects Another Cuban pitcher is attempting to make the leap to Major League Baseball. Misael Siverio, a 24-year-old lefty, was in Des Moines, Iowa Tuesday in advance of exhibition games against United States colleges, and he left the team hotel to pursue the Major League dream, according to Jorge Ebro of El Nuevo Herald. "It is not easy leaving behind what is yours, but after a giving it a lot of thought I made this decision for my future and for my family. My dream, of course, is to make the Major Leagues, and starting today I will start doing what I need to do to accomplish that," Siverio told Ebro in Spanish. Given his age, it appears Siverio will not be subject to the international signing restrictions established in the collective barganing agreement. He also has to have played a minimum of three professional seasons in a Cuban professional league, which seems likely. Most Cuban defectors establish residency in countries other than the U.S., to avoid being subject to MLB's amateur draft. So while Siverio defected in Iowa, we'll have to see if he will be headed back out of the country in the name of being declared an MLB free agent.

Angels are worst off then we are for starting pitching and have no trade chips at all. The Dodgers just have too much money.... and then the Red Sox... Yankees................... We have the money.... but he will be soooo over paid.

Agreed. And the exact opposite could be true. The Jays could simply think he's not that great while the Dodgers think he is worth a big deal.

Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 21, 2013 Author Posted July 21, 2013 dodgers to offer miguel alfredo gonzalez $50 million while a lot of attention has been focused on major-league arms such as matt garza, bud norris and jake peavy, cuban defector miguel alfredo gonzalez is perhaps the most talked-about pitcher. There are a bevy of teams interested in the hurler, but it sounds like the los angeles dodgers may be preparing for a yasiel puig-ish move to take gonzalez off the market. Peter gammons of mlb.com reports that the dodgers will reportedly go five years and close to $50 million on gonzalez. Gm:"word is dodgers will go five years, close to $50m on (cuban) miguel gonzalez. If so, he'll be a dodger.: — peter gammons (@pgammo) july 21, 2013 gammons adds that if the dodgers place such an offer in front of gonzalez, the right-hander will be heading to los angeles. There’s been talk that gonzalez could warrant as much as $60 million over five years, so the dodgers’ offer could just be the start of many more lucrative propositions to come. According to reports, teams such as the chicago cubs, new york yankees, minnesota twins, miami marlins, philadelphia phillies, toronto blue jays, atlanta braves, texas rangers and boston red sox have all been tied to gonzalez. f*** la

ace3113 Verified Member Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 Indians near deal with RHP Leando Linares of Cuba The Indians are closing in on a deal with Cuban teenage right-hander Leando Linares Gonzalez worth an estimated $1 million, according to an industry source. Linares, 19, pitched for the Cuban National Team 16-and-under squad in competitions in Chinese Taipei in 2009 and Lagos de Moreno, Mexico in 2010. The 6-ft-3, 205-pound pitcher made a name for himself on the island by starring for Villa Clara in the 16-and-under and 18-and-under divisions in the National Championships in Cuba from 2009 to 2012. Because he is not at least 23 years old and has not played at least three seasons in a Cuban professional league, Linares Gonzalez is subject to the new international signing guidelines established by the Collective Bargaining Agreement. The Indians have signed four players, including shortstop Willy Castro who signed for $850,000, for a total close to $1.4 million since the international signing period began on July 2nd. Cleveland entered the international signing period with a bonus pool of $3,636,900.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2013 Author Posted July 23, 2013 Dodgers not in on Cuban pitcher Gonzalez Ken Gurnick of MLB.com reports that the Dodgers are not pursuing Cuban right-hander Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez. The Dodgers have been considered one of the favorites to sign Gonzalez, with one general manager recently telling Peter Gammons of MLB.com that the club could be willing to go to five years and $50 million, but it appears that they have backed out of the running. The Braves, Cubs, Yankees, Red Sox, Rangers, Phillies, Blue Jays, Twins, and Marlins are among the other teams who have reportedly shown interest in the 26-year-old right-hander. It's believe that he could sign somewhere as soon as this week. AA do it
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 AA do it why pay money for a young talented player when you have a few more prospects you can trade away for fading old farts who should be retiring or maybe never have been on pro ball to begin with?
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 23, 2013 Author Posted July 23, 2013 Dodgers just sign a flamethrower cuban Alexander Guerrero for 32 millions. They are doing press conference in DR today
o2cui2i Community Moderator Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 you know that the jays will make the wrong move whatever it is... overpay and get a player or under value and not move for a star they could have for JUST cash. it's the way they roll.
FireAlexAnthopoulos Verified Member Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 Signing this Gonzalez guy would actually be a good move. He seems to be highly-regarded, he's still fairly young, and at least he's not some washed-up old loser veteran. If he's good, great. If he sucks, throw him out there anyway for the tank effort. Which means, of course, that AA won't do it. The chances are probably higher that he'll sell off the rest of the farm system for an old scrub pitcher.
