I wonder what this actually means. They're at ~$120 million now. Retaining the current team while letting JJ walk will cost about 135. Retaining the current team with JJ will cost about 150. A $30 million boost to payroll is pretty big flexibility. It doesn't actually improve the team tough.

You're taking JJ into consideration, which isn't a discussion point until the end of the season. Beeston's talking about the deadline. There's probably more payroll flexibility if we reach the post season

How much for HALF a season of Cliff Lee??? LOL

Hasn't our farm system been gutted enough? I'm just wondering how we can get the likes of Cliff Lee. Chase Utley, Matt Garza or whoever with the talent so low level down there. Gotta give something good to get something good.

I don't think Garza would command an elite prospect. Lee... Definitely. Utley... Probably. Amaro stated today that he's under no pressure to shed payroll ans even if he was, the teams that would be inquiring on Utley or Lee would have the money to not have the phillies take on their full salary. Seems kind of a dumb thing to say since if they ate payroll they could up their demands and increase the amount of teams that could potentially be suitors, but nobody ever accused Amaro of being smart.

I think Cubs are looking for an elite prospect and that to land him today that's what it would take. IMO that will change as the deadline approaches as I'm not sure Garza would turn down a QO, with the assumption the Cubs feel the same way, I think they move him for the best package possible.

Utley/Lee and the perception of fielding a playoff contender for the Phillies to move those guys without a top prospect coming back. Lee especially is going to take a no-doubt package for Amaro to pull the trigger.

Yeah they should absolutely ask for an elite prospect, I just don't think they'll end up getting one.

I just kind of took for granted that there's money for the deadline. Anything otherwise would be absolutely f***ing retarded. The far more interesting question is regarding payroll space next season.

Desperately need to unload Buehrle.

That would certainly help. We'd actually miss the stable 200+ innings he provides though. He's not worth the money, but he does improve the team.

If he can put up 2 WAR and +200IP of sub 4.50 ERA ball he will be well worth the $20M to this team.

Payroll flexibility probably just means that they can take on an expiring contract at the deadline. i.e. afford to pay Chase Utley 7 million for a partial season.

Or maybe, payroll flexibility to extend AA for 10 more years!!!

I can't wait to see what prospects we trade for a 0 surplus, free agent deal this time.

If AA trades stroman, Sanchez, or osuna I'm off his bandwagon, unless it is for something LEGIT and controllable for at least 3 years.

Are there any SP rumoured to be available that fit this criteria? I'd be pretty OK moving one (or more) of those arms for a starter controllable 3+ years.

Wasn't this the plan going into last offseason? I don't think there are any that fit this criteria.

Sign the Cuban guy, just make sure he doesn't write anything stupid on any visible body parts or uniform.

No, I'm perfectly fine with that. This team needs to go 49-30 to win 90 games. That's a 100-win pace over almost half a season. The season is all but over. The last thing I want AA to do is move pieces for someone like Ricky Nolasco or Joe Saunders.

Exactly, if there is Is going to be a miracle, let it happen with what we have. Redmond hurts for Sundays start though

Morrow and Romero are the guys to be pissed at, IMO. These 2 guys' struggles/injuries are f***ing up this team. And since we're at it, why the f*** hasn't Lawrie played in like 4 days? I know he had a family wedding, but f*** that, he needed the playing time, what a joke!

All I want is AA to firesale and even out this team offensively. Ship some parts here and there to tighten up catcher and 2B. Might want to sell high on Lind and DH Melky to give Gose and everyday job. Extend Rasmus too, unless we ship him out in the deadline.

It would be nice if he re-acquires Escobar if the Rays get another SS, and tighten up the infield D by swinging Reyes to 2B.... one can only dream :P

I'm really not sure why people are surprised there is more money available? I have been saying it for a while but most seemed to think it wasn't even a possibility. This team is doing well rating and attendance wise and even with their s***** start and overall pathetic season in terms of initial expectations, fans are still supporting this team. This is an enormous marketing tool at Rogers disposal.

They will continue to push forward, raise payroll and trade prospects. Another big acquisition and they probably see another jump in attendance/ratings for 2014.

I think an 80-win season will be a giant kick in the nuts for fan interest. Hype was starting to drop until the 11-game streak got things going again. IMO interest will die big-time through August and September.

This team probably needs to win about 85 games and they will spin it as though this team is legit citing the 10-21 start.

Utley + Lee for Sanchez + Stroman + Osuna

Done deal.

I kind of hope they win like 75 so there's no sugarcoating this clusterf***. Falling <5 games short and continuing the same old song and dance with the same group of morons is not going to get the franchise anywhere. A piss-poor season will make it undeniable that everyone in charged f***ed up, and jobs need to be re-evaluated.

Oh they'll find a way to avoid taking the blame... Trust me... I forgot if you ever said how long you've been a Blue Jays fan, but I've been one for 23 years now, and they will find an excuse... JP made excuses, and AA will be no different... Seen our lineup card lately? They'll blame injuries to the everydayers and to the rotation, and use the bullpen as reason to get excited next year... You know it, and I know it... 70 wins in dead last, or 90 wins 1 short of a post season birth, their off season plans will be no different
