KSaw Verified Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Career .347 OBP 2013 .347 OBP Career .301 Avg 2013 .289 Avg His slugging and OPS aren't far off career numbers either. Who cares if he's 36?
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 I suppose if you could get him on a 2 year deal it could work Well he'd be a rental that really wouldn't cost much in regard to players. He did start his career with Toronto and has always said that he liked the city. If we actually wanted to keep him I doubt that getting a deal done would be all that difficult. He wants to get a ring and probably has this year and maybe 2 more to get one.
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Just want to add that 4 weeks ago everyone was hoping that this team would be only 1-3 games under .500 at the break. I think many got spoiled by the 11 game win streak. Well it looks like they'll be 2 under, with a rainout to make up with the White Sox later. With the 10-game home stand that includes 4 with Houston after the break, the boys are likely at 56-57 wins and only 5-7 games out 1st at the end of July. They are buyers!

Problem is, that unlike other divisions with teams in our position, we are dead last in the AL East. How high do you think we can finish? 4th? 3rd?
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Leap frogging multiple teams is harder because they play each other and someone gets to win. I get it. The good news is that there is nearly half a season remaining. The goal is first but clearly they need to start passing teams before September when there's a large number of divisional games for everyone. Get to 3rd by mid August and there's a shot. I do expect them to be out of last on August 1st.
KSaw Verified Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 That injury bug is really starting to catch up with Boston. Their 4th and 5th starters and the bullpen are holes and take a look and you'll see that Lester has kinda stunk over his last 10 starts. Ellsbury's wrist will be an issue, Ross is done and Salty is looking tired. They've patch worked 3b and SS too. I just can't see them hanging onto first for long. I figure that they are 3rd in a few weeks, with Toronto behind them and the Yankees last. End of July: Tampa Bay -- Baltimore 2.5 Boston 3 Toronto 6.5 Yankees 7

End of July: Tampa Bay -- Baltimore 2.5 Boston 3 Toronto 6.5 Yankees 7 I think the playoffs are still unrealistic for this year, but it's imperative we get out of 5th and at least 3rd place, and finish let's say within 6 games or so of first. At least they can chalk up the slow April/May start and argue for better results in 2014 (assuming realistic changes are done ie new bats and pitching)
JaysRap Verified Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 Every single AL East team won last night Grrrr Ya that stinks. When are those guys gonna go on their losing streaks?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 I think the playoffs are still unrealistic for this year Me too. Not impossible but very very unlikely. In order for us to make the playoffs, way too many things would have to happen: 1. Melky and Lawrie back healthy AND productive 2. No more than maybe one other significant injury to an impact player this season 3. Ongoing good performance from Esmil Rogers or a heroic return from Morrow or Happ 4. Good stuff from Dickey and Johnson 5. A trade for an impact player before the end of July or a heroic callup from the minors 6. One or both of Tampa and Baltimore to fall off big time (I am presuming Boston holds and Yankees fall off) Possible? Yeah. Likelihood? Very, very low
Deadpool Old-Timey Member Posted July 11, 2013 Posted July 11, 2013 I'd pass on Young, but that's me If Kirk's proposal of Bonifacio and a "meh" prospect gets Young as a half-year rental, I do that just to actually get some kind of return for Bonifacio. I would prefer to deal him for a piece that can help in the future, but it wouldn't so bad to do some addition by subtraction here (and Young would likely be useful this year, for whatever that winds up being worth.)
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 12, 2013 Posted July 12, 2013 Jays are not getting Garza... come on... Lee or bust
ElNik2013 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 (edited) So when is Bautista gonna demand that the team acquire players to help him win? Wasn't it around this time last year that he went public with his demands? If he was more consistent, the team might be better. Edited July 13, 2013 by ElNik2013

It can't be all on him, our rotation has s*** the bed in an epic way and this team has been an all around mess.

I didn't put it on him, I said the team 'might be' better if he was a bit more consistent. The season's been over since mid May anyway so who cares.
jays4life19 Old-Timey Member Posted July 13, 2013 Posted July 13, 2013 What do you guys think of trying to go after Nick Castellanos for 3rd base? Provided that Lawrie show's he can stick at 2nd in the coming weeks.. Obviously a package would have to start with Jansen or Delabar. How much more after that?

We have a little depth in the pen with a few injured arms coming back soon
Pete_7 Verified Member Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 While the Cubs' Matt Garza currently pitches in the National League, Bruce Levine of ESPNChicago.com says that he could soon return to the AL. Levine reports that the Rangers and Blue Jays are the "front runners" in acquiring Garza's services for the balance of 2013. Though the Rangers have frequently been mentioned as pursuers of Garza, who figures to be the top starter available, the Jays have generally not been placed atop the list. Nevertheless, Levine says that Toronto has been very active in scouting the righty over his last three starts. As for Texas, Levine says that power-hitting prospect Mike Olt would probably be included in a deal. From MLBTR

From MLBTR AA seemed fairly clear that he wasn't looking for a rental, so if we got Garza you'd have to think it would be coming with an extension.
Arkadium Verified Member Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 It's based on the guy seeing Blue Jays scouts at Garza starts. Blue Jays scouts at everyone's starts lol. Although it's very possible they're scouting him as a potential free agent signing. I thought we fired all our scouts and AA was just using BREF and SSS to make his key decisions?
flafson Verified Member Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 Could be a flip between JJ and Garza.

Why Blue Jays do it when they are not in pennant race?
G-Snarls Community Moderator Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 For us in Free Agency, if that's what you mean. Sign Garza and get a comp pick by letting JJ go. Yep It's time for AA to land a big fish via free agency this winter Need to preserve what's left of the farm

Travis Wood > Garza (NO same Level of Garza but ++controllable) Travis for JP ps Knowing AA, maybe he was watching to Pedro Rondon and/or Pedro Strop.

If you assume that AA wants Garza and we all know AA doesn't like to pay free agency money, then the solution would be giving them JJ in exchange for Garza. Assuming they will get an extension with JJ and we will with Garza.
Angrioter Old-Timey Member Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 Probably this AA is not going to trade anything of value for him for half a season Rasmus-Yunel kind of trades (Three-way maybe) AA will sell high 1 or 2 relievers and JJ. If someone ask for Buehrle, AA will send Mark and some cash. AA targets Headley, Grandal, Mesoraco, Christian Bethancourt, Bauer, Dorssys Paulino, Castellanos, Olt, Matt Davidson and maybe Profar
bowld Verified Member Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 LOL at these threads. Every morning after a win the "we're buyers" thread is bumped up and every time we lose the "we're sellers" gets bumped.
DuckDuckGose Verified Member Posted July 14, 2013 Posted July 14, 2013 As Dirk Hayhurst keeps saying they need to be value conscious sellers. Buyer, seller whatever the label is they need to be making moves for next season and the organization's future.
