flafson Verified Member Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 Utley makes 15 million right now... Even if it was 10mil, not sure we can afford his salary.
KSaw Verified Member Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 +1 Utley seems like the perfect fit if healthy. He likely won't demand the prospects/players of a Kinsler or other names being mentioned like Lucroy on here. He'd be a nice fit on this team. Hate to be a killjoy but Utley has a limited no-trade contract and I will say with 100% certainty that Toronto is on the list named in the deal he signed 7 years ago. I would also say that considering his knees and his heading into free agency, he won't be waiving it to come play on Astro-Turf.
KSaw Verified Member Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 There seems to be so much buzz on Utley not only going to the Orioles but signing with them, it just seems fairly likely.
dineke Old-Timey Member Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 I just can't see them taking on Lee's contract. NaNaNa I can't hear you.
KSaw Verified Member Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 Lol. Lee isn't realistic though. And even with Morrow out and maybe for the season, Happ and the resurgent Romero and perhaps Stroman could help down the stretch. The rotation should be just fine as is until the end of July. By then Rogers' innings will be mounting and someone else will need to step in.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 And even with Morrow out and maybe for the season, Happ and the resurgent Romero and perhaps Stroman could help down the stretch. I really hope we aren't going to be a #4 coming off a traumatic injury, Romeo and a 22 year old down the stretch.
KSaw Verified Member Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 As the 5th starter; we might be. And sure you can add Nolin's name but he's also a kid and Hutchison but he's a long shot. It is what it is. If Morrow is out long term, they have to go with what they've got now until Rogers gets shut down and then plug in Ricky, Happ or a hot kid.
John_Havok Old-Timey Member Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 AA was on the MLB network radio this morning, I only caught the last two questions but here's the quick version. Reyes DH today and again tomorrow and they'll evaluate. They think he'll probably need more time and would go down to New Hampshire after Monday since buffalo is going on the road and NH is at home, they are targeting the Start of the Boston series as his probable return date but outside chance for Tampa. He feels they still have enough pieces for a blockbuster type trade, though he doesn't feel one will be there, and isn't looking for one. He specifically said area of need is 2b as they feel they do not have one that can really play there everyday.

This seems ultra-conservative to me... And "after Monday" makes little sense to me, they're going to fly him to NH for one game, and if they feel he's okay, fly him to Tampa for the next? One game at DH seems like it wouldn't make any actual difference... Unless he's got a move on the horizon that he thinks he needs an extra day for, I suppose.
ace3113 Verified Member Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 I think we need one more bat, a more complete hitter, who will hit for average, make contact, and take the walk. The question is what position do we target for an upgrade, assuming 1B, DH, SS, and RF are spoken for. I really think trading for the remaining 3mm on Michael Young's salary would be the cheapest alternative. He's a free agent after this season, and likely wouldn't cost much in the way of prospects, and he's still a productive hitter. .288/.353/.408 4hr 18rbi 12(2b) 3(3b) 25bb 38so We could play him at 2nd, 3rd, 1st, and DH from time to time just to get that bat in the lineup. Reyes SS Bautista RF Edwin 1B Lind DH Young 2B Melky LF Arencibia C Rasmus CF Lawrie 3B

Arencibia is a perfect Loria guy. Grew up in Miami, he's Cuban, and he hits lots of dingers. Rob Brantly had a .370 wOBA in his cup of coffee last year and is struggling a bit this year but he's only 23. I really think a JPA + low level prospect for Brantly trade could work.

I wonder which is correct?

Jason Castro from the Astros would be a nice target, though doubt that happens. I don't think the Jays really do anything behind the plate for the rest of this season. JPA and Thole are the guys they plan to roll with.

He specifically said area of need is 2b as they feel they do not have one that can really play there everyday. I think finding a decent bat and glove at 2B should be the main goal. Here are some realistic options that could be on the block (outside of Kinsler and Utley): Michael Young Rickie Weeks Jemile Weeks Gordan Beckham Daniel Murphy Dustin Ackely Howie Kendrick Young could probably be had at a decent price, but not sure he'd be a fit at 2B with the glove. The bat would be a nice improvement, though his defence is what worries me. Daniel Murphy kind of the same thing, but he's younger and might cost more from the Mets. Ackely, Beckham and Jemile Weeks would be guys to buy low on and you would have to cross your fingers that a change of scenario would spark their bats. Likely would have to give up something good, since I doubt those organizations give them up for nothing. If you could pull a Travis Snider/Lincoln type deal, like maybe trading a starter like Drabek etc for one of those guys, it could work. Oakland is rumoured to be shopping Weeks heavily, though their price has been expensive from what I've read. As for Rickie Weeks, he's been a huge disappointment though he does have a track record of success. Maybe a change of scenario sparks his bat. Kendrick likely would be expensive to pursue in a trade.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 The Jays won't trade JPA for Brantly, thats for sure. We f***ing should. Michael Young Rickie Weeks Jemile Weeks Gordan Beckham Daniel Murphy Dustin Ackely Howie Kendrick My head will explode if we trade for R Weeks. J Weeks and Beckham may not be an upgrade over what we have. Apparently Murphy is a HORRIBLE fielder. I like Kendrick but he'd be damn expensive. Young is a nice option. Ackley's probably my favorite.
Captain Adama Old-Timey Member Posted June 23, 2013 Posted June 23, 2013 I wouldn't trade for Weeks, the price tag would be too high for a guy who's K/BB rate has been trending in the wrong direction for a while.

I wonder which is correct? Soccer fields? NFL uses a similar artificial turf that has longer blades and is more sand based. It is not the same. They are also very different sports. How many hamstring injuries occur in football? Not many. Most football knee injuries are also caused by impact as well. Even grass fields for baseball v football are harder. It's a different type of field.

Drabek has microscopic trade value at best.
