GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 You're right, there are a lot of teams that went heavily on SP. I took a look and 11 teams other than the Jays took at least 7 pitchers out of their 10 picks. There were none other with 9 (I don't think) but pretty sure that there 3-4 more that drafted 8 pitchers. Cool find, nice. There still isn't any excuse for not taking a single damn bat before the 10th, but this makes me feel a liiiiittle less annoyed.
ReturnOfTheYeti Verified Member Posted June 7, 2013 Posted June 7, 2013 I'm not saying I like the thought - I'm concerned with some big bats that could have been passed over but meh, they Jays weren't the only team, whether that makes it easier or not.
ace3113 Verified Member Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 (edited) Good news Dougie, Martinez and Martarano are still on the board. Now looking at our picks and where some of them were ranked (or not ranked) I expect at least a few underslot deals (except Bickford) to give us bonus space to use on later picks. 10)Bickford, Phillip Oaks Christian HS (CA) RHP R/R HS BA Rank: 20 PG Rank: 17 47) Hollon, Clinton Woodford County HS (KY) RHP R/R HS BA Rank: 95 PG Rank 99 83) Murphy, Patrick Hamilton HS (AZ) RHP R/R HS BA Rank: Not in top 500 PG Rank 469 115) Smith, Evan Mary G Montgomery HS (AL) LHP R/L HS BA Rank: Not in top 500 PG Rank 294 145) Lietz, Daniel Heartland CC (IL) LHP L/L J1 BA Rank: 254 PG Rank 253 175) Boyd, Matt Oregon State (OR) LHP L/L SR BA Rank: 178 PG Rank 124 205) Greene, Conner Santa Monica HS (CA) RHP R/R HS BA Rank: 446 PG Rank 471 235) Graveman, Kendall Mississippi State (MS) RHP R/R SR BA Rank: 470 PG Rank 241 265) Girodo, Chad Mississippi State (MS) RHP R/R SR BA Rank: Not in top 500 PG Rank: Not in top 500 295) Custons, Garrett Air Force Academy (CO) C R/R SR BA Rank: Not in top 500 PG Rank: Not in top 500 Edited June 8, 2013 by TheHurl I was going to post ranks anyway, hope you don't mind that I added PG ranks
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 Yo Ace, besides Whitson/Martinez/Martarano, who else is still available? Specifically, what bats?

AA said many times that you draft the best player available when your pick comes. apparently that has been thrown under the bus along with building a sustainable contender.

If he's punting a lot of these guys to get a s*** ton of room next year or to sign a guy late... I guess I understand it.

GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 No way were that much under $6.5 M with this group though. I would be completely understanding of punting 2-4 midrounders to sign an advanced bat like Martarano or a really nice pitcher like Brentz or Whitson or Quantrill (I think he's still there), and I think we'd be able to get enough room with a couple of our midrounders being $1000 bonus guys.
ace3113 Verified Member Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 Yo Ace, besides Whitson/Martinez/Martarano, who else is still available? Specifically, what bats? From your list: Cal Quantrill (RHP) and Jake Brentz (LHP). From my list: Chandler Eden (RHP), JB Woodman (CF), Nick Longhi (1B), Rowdy Tellez (1B), and I'll add Willie Calhoun (2B), Elvin Soto ©, Edwin Diaz (SS), and Wesley Jones (3B) to my list now. From BA's top 200 (sans our picks): Connor Jones (RHP), Kyle Serrano (RHP), Ryan Boldt (CF), Garrett Williams (LHP), Cavan Biggio (3B/2B), Chris Okey ©, A.J. Vanegas (RHP), Garrett Hampson (SS), AJ Puk (LHP/1B), Jordan Sheffield (RHP), Aaron Brown (LHP), Stephen Wrenn (OF), Zach Collins (C/1B), Brett Morales (RHP), Eric Lauer (LHP), Thomas Hatch (RHP), Alec Hansen (RHP), Trevor Morrison (SS), Will Crowe (RHP), Trevor Clifton (RHP), John Riley ©, Adam Engel (OF), Dominic Taccolini (RHP), Alex Grosner (RHP), David Gates (RHP), Lukas Schiraldi (RHP), Cody Thomas (OF), Ronnie Gideon (3B), Johnewshy Fargas (OF), Andy Hillis (RHP), Keegan Thompson (RHP), Robert Tyler (RHP), Andy McGuire (3B).
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 Boldt and Collins are still available?!?! That's pretty damn intriguing. Who's your favorite bat, Woodman?
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 The rankings after 100 aren't precise at all, I wouldn't worry that these guys aren't ranked highly. Remember, Syndergaard wasn't even ranked by BA coming into the draft and they took him in the Comp Round. Worked out great. Synder's stuff was waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better than anyone we took (minus maybe Bickford) and I don't remember him having as many injury risks (I could be wrong though).

I guess I understand it. yeah, you have to wonder if they know some of these guys just wont sign. if they have 3-4 of the top ten rounds not sign, they get a very nice set of picks next year.
ace3113 Verified Member Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 Boldt and Collins are still available?!?! That's pretty damn intriguing. Who's your favorite bat, Woodman? I think Collins might be signable for a reasonable price, but Boldt is probably going to school unless he gets first round money. My favourite bat is Longhi or Tellez, but Woodman is my favourite bat left that can play a useful position.

GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 Only other team to take all pitchers so far...the Detroit Tigers (albeit 6 college ones after Crawford in the 1st). Funny how much I've compared the two front offices of late. I still think Beeston's heavily involved in the change in direction the Jays have taken.
Folkways Verified Member Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 (edited) I know people are disappointed that AA took players who were slotted later but something to keep in mind is that a highschool kid ranked 200 is way more likely to be better in the long run then a college sr ranked 150. So using the argument of this being a busted draft by AA based on rankings is not reasonable. A 17/18 yr old highschool kid who can throw 94 mph is almost certain to gain at least one Mph on their fastball and develop better off-speed pitches, vs a 21 or 22 yr old College Sr who is maxed out. Pitchers take longer to reach their potential so it's almost certain that an 18 year old pitcher is going to get better. Hitting can be harder to project IMO. I would rather take an established hitter in college then some project coming out of highschool. There is a chance Bickford turns into a guy who throws consistent high 90's with a devestating hook. He could end up being as good as the top few pitchers in the draft. Edited June 8, 2013 by Folkways
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/events/draft/y2013/drafttracker.jsp#topavailable I kinda toss rankings out the window at this point.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 I almost choked when the idiot they have doing MLB-tv said that the jays were good at developing young players. since when? f***ing news to most jays fans. ROFL!!! Everything's news to most Jays fans. But remember we have like 8 billion people watching at home, so they must be rabid ultra knowledgable fans.

GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 Just don't care enough to fully rage. It's honestly laughable. Who in our system is a legit position player prospect? Who? f*** me sideways. Well, if we dealt some of the older players/pitchers on our team that aren't getting better with age, maybe we could re-stock the farm. Gotta love dem vets.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 I hate everything. Everyone I want. Gone. Martarano, Martinez (I think), Whitson and maybe another 1 or two are the only ones who remain. Pitcher after pitcher after pitcher. All injured. The only ones that seems good are Boyd and Greene. The Rays and Athletics can go f*** themselves. This is a complete disaster. PROGECTABILLLITY, folks. Wasn't it a few weeks ago when you couldn't discern the difference between High A ball and A ball? And now you're this Amateur prospect expert......weird.

I see you're in an elitist mood so I won't object if you feel like bitching me out or something

Who? f*** me sideways. No sense having them...they will continue to sign the DeRosa's Izturis' of the world. Lopes and Pillar are nice bench pieces some day (for another team of course) does that count?

Atothe Old-Timey Member Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 What interesting approach, extreme but I don't see how us as fans and prospects watchers can be mad. This is a really s***** draft in terms of elite talent and depth. What they do next year is probably go back to mixing it up. I can't say anything but wow.

This is a really s***** draft in terms of elite talent and depth. What they do next year is probably go back to mixing it up. I can't say anything but wow. I disagree. There are some very nice hitting prospects: Healy, Denney, O'Neill, Milone, etc. If we went MAINLY pitching I wouldn't be half as mad. But ALL pitching in the EARLY rounds? I strongly disagree with it. Even if we had gone mainly pitching in the early rounds but taken a chance on one of the good bats, that would be pretty satisfying imo.

I'm getting the growing impression the Jays are just going to lowball Bickford. With the new compensation system, the only way to stockpile picks in a good draft is to punt a bad one. It wouldn't be out of character for AA to try something like this. Bickford is intriguing enough to be a worthy project if he does sign for slot but the greater upside is in him not signing.
GeorgiaPeach Verified Member Posted June 8, 2013 Posted June 8, 2013 This is what he's talking about. Not even a big deal Its not a big deal. But in this case you have a poster squawking about missing out on prospects and can't figure out the Minor League structure.....seems odd to me.
