Are Jays Fans more frustrated in 2013 than 2009?

I am curious as to whether fans are more frustrated with the Jays this year than they were in 2009 which was the year they started at 27-14 & finished with 75 wins?

 

In previous years, Jays fans knew that Rogers had a limited payroll, so there was little hope that the team would acquire free agents or trade for established players .

 

On the other hand, we kept hearing about all the prospects in the minor leagues, so periodically we would get to see a players make their MLB debut.

 

As much as this season has been depressing with poor performance since April 2nd, it's fun to see established vets like Melky, Jose & Edwin carry the team to victories.

 

I hope Rogers doesn't pull the plug on AA's payroll budget of $120 million for 2014

I was more emotionally invested in 2009. I hadn't really thought it was our year or anything and I was just hoping for a solid effort. then we had a huge beginning, and I got my hopes up.

 

This year, I kept my expectations low, in large part because of 2009, and I'm not really all that frustrated, I've reached the point where I can sit back, laugh, and go on an all caps rage.

 

So, yeah, 2009.

It was heartbreaking in 2009, but there was the emergence of Hill and Lind, and a bit of Bautista in that special September... Rod Barajas had a strong season as our catcher, Scutaro had an amazing year on both sides of the ball, and of course Randy Ruiz, so there were some positives I did take out of they year.

 

This year is frustrating, not as heartbreaking as 2009. Knowing that our players are playing like crap doesn't help. Oh yeah and the injury to Reyes..... and our entire rotation under preforming *sigh*. Also unlike 2009, they shoved the idea of being in the post season down our throats and our payroll doubled. Oh yeah and we burned our farm system too and we know that the future isn't bright money wise, player wise and contract wise.

The expectations this year were WAYYYYY higher then that of 2009.

 

We unloaded basically our entire farm, massively increased payroll and still sit in the basement 7 games under .500 with a broken pitching staff.

Time will tell. If this team doesn't make the playoffs (which seems pretty likely) then I would have to go with 2013.

This year is one of the more frustrating IMO, 2009 I knew it was not going to last, this team in 2013 has the talent to be elite, and in May you can see sign's of it, at least offensively, but a terrrible April and inept pitching has cost us dearly.

I'd say this year is more disappointing. 2009 was a surprise and a great start. We really didn't have the expectations nor the "talent" that was supposed to go out and win. It was a disappointment that they fell apart towards the end of the year but the season wasn't expected to be "the year." This year, after more years than most of us would like to count, we were given a lot of expectations and hope. Management FINALLY put their money where their mouths were and made a financial investment and went after proven players (well, a good number of them were anyway) with a mix of talent we had as hold overs. Then the season began and hope was pretty much dashed. For the first time in almost 20 years baseball was talking about the Jays and fans thought the time had finally come and then we're watching what is happening. Seems like every year we suffer injuries but this year we lost big with Reyes and other players on the DL or having issues all year long. A horribly slow start and a rotation that just fell apart and doesn't seem to be settling. With all that said, this year, by far was worse since the expectations were not only high but the team, should at the very least, be playing a lot better than a last place team.

In 2009 we got screwed by Wakefield and his knuckleball. This year we got screwed by a knuckleball once again.

2013 is worse and it's not too close for me. Most fans had very low expectations going into 2009. It was nice that we had a good start, but in reality we weren't ready to compete.

 

We went into 2013 expecting the playoffs. It could still turn around, but as of now, this year has been a huge disappointment.

For 2013 I was excited, but cautiously excited, because I knew full well the other side of the coin, and how bad it could get and now we're experiencing it, so I've basically come to the point where I DGAF. Plus I have MLB.TV so I can enjoy around the league baseball so much more and appreciate how f***ing good Vin Scully is as a broadcaster. 2009, I sold into the hot start and was let down, of course, my knowledge of baseball wasn't nearly as broad as it is now, so emotionally, 2009 was worse for me.

If the 2013 Jays had got off to a 27-14 start & then collapsed, fans would be pulling their hair out. A late season collapse by the 2013 Jays would be heartbreaking.

I regret not keeping my MLB package with Cogeco. I could watch virtually every MLB game on TV. Now, I can turn off the games when the Jays get blown out.

It's hard to take AA's injury predictions seriously. He was on baseball central & told Hayhurst that Lawrie was Day 2 Day & within a few hours he was on the DL.

 

Does anyone expect Morrow to make his next start on time?

Definitely this year.

 

I didn't like having to give up d'Arnaud + Synder, but I could tolerate it to get an ace pitcher in the name of winning now.

I didn't like taking on all that salary in the Marlins deal, but I could tolerate it to rebuild the rotation + Reyes in the name of winning now.

 

The problem is that we've mortgaged our long-term sustainability, and don't have any of the short-term success that we're supposed to have. Playoffs aside, I was just looking forward to the excitement of being in the race into September, but we've been in a hole since pretty much Day 1.

 

One one hand, it seems like this organization might still be in decent shape with guys like Hutchison coming back soon and a few nice pieces in the minors, but the problem with that is that we still have the same management team and organizational philosophy overseeing everything.

I disagree here. In 87 there was the collapse of all collapses, but interest was high all year, ticket sales were robust, the health of the franchise was strong.

 

In 1987 there was no thought that this was a fundamentally flawed franchise. It was a great franchise that had a bad week.

 

In 1987 the wallets hadn't opened yet. The Jays were Tampa Bay. It was a tremendous time.

 

You could look at Pat Gillick with pride. A man to be respected... not a fat ninja. Everybody raved at "the blue jay way". They produced more young players then anyone else.

 

In 1987 they had a 25 year old Fernandez... Bell, Moseby, and Barfield were 27.

 

They had a 23 year old platoon of Cecil Fielder and McGriff... a 23 year old platoon destined to hit 800 homeruns and win 4 homer titles. Jimmy Key was 26. Dave Stieb was only 29... and he was viewed as an old man possibly near the end.

 

After that it didn't work out exactly with that group.. but that huge base of talent was reconfigured into the 92/93 group. At which point young players Olerud (23/24) and Alomar (24/25) and Guzman (25ish) and Hentgen (25ish) became key.

 

Once upon a time it was produce as many young players as you can... don't worry about a collapse, because there'll be a 10 year window with this philosaphy.

I was a Montreal Expos fan back then , so I can't comment on the Jays 1987 collapse. From a marketing perspective, the poor performance since April 2nd must have an effect on expected ticket sales in June,July,August. I haven't seen Jays TV ratings for May 2013, but they may be down over May 2012.
