backontop Verified Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 I just listened to Mike Wilner, June 18, after the Jays won their 7th game in a row and finally heard an intelligent caller ask him what is Bonifacios value to the team, Wilner let his mind wonder and responded with a stupid answer, something like, he is a great 25th man on the team. This guy can't hit, we gave him a chance, he was just a "throw in" in that trade with Miami, I say lets cut the ties with this guy and, we'll at least let that second baseman from Buffalo who is almost 30 but batting 360 play a few games. He can always DH too, and would probably be a better 25th man on the roster then Bonifacio.
backontop Verified Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Yes I remember Mike Wilner in April, I didn't know who was more repugnant, the Blue Jays or Mike Wilner...........to stay on the subject of the thread.
Caper Verified Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Boni is fine to have on the team. His defence is better and he provides a lot if speed on the bases... Be good if he was a back up though.
Caper Verified Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 I love some of the regular callers.. There is one suck hole who sounds like his nose is plugged... Peter from St. Catherine's is pretty good too... Hasn't called everyday like previous years.
backontop Verified Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Running around the bases at full speed for practice before the game begins doesn't count. The guy just can't hit any better then Kawaski, at least Kawaski knows how to walk.
Frenchsoup Verified Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 I love when he says that Boni has 'crazy tools' and you have to stick with that upside. He has one tool, speed, and no idea how to use it. There are tonnes of guys with 70 speed in the minors who will never play in the big leagues. Speed alone won't get you anywhere. i wouldn't say he has no idea how to use it when he stole 30 of 32 bases last year and is very good at the delayed steal.... Anyways if boni cuts down the strikeouts, and is in that 9 hole and getting on base at a better clip... this team could be scary on offense when reyes gets back
backontop Verified Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Fans who want to complain are screened by Mikes buddy, so I haven't heard any in 2013. Unless you count the guys who call in and tell Mike how much I love your show and you are so smart Mike, then they may get a quick minor insult in but it is like 4 seconds delayed, so Mike calls him a name and shuts him off. That makes for bad sports talk. All you get is Mike Suck-ups and maby a dumb question, Like ",,I don't get it, last night we were tied with Tampa for 5 points and we didn't even play, but because Tampa won, now we are 5 points behind them, I've been watching the Blue Jays for 30 years I don't get it." It makes you ask yourself, why am I listening to this? And mike goes into a 5 minute speech as if he gets paid by the word. No wonder he has lost his voice the past week, the best thing that could happen to this strange but addictive show.

I fooled the screener into thinking I wanted to ask about how unlucky this team was and how much I loved the show Lol. Then I got on and ranted, and Called Mike a giant homer. The screener must have felt so bad..

You guys are assuming Mike Wilner believes the s*** he says. Wilner, like AA is living the dream. Have you ever been employed in coorporate North America?? Wilner's job is a great one. I think he has a wife, kids, nice house. And he announces baseball games. Anyone on this board would kill to have Wilner's life. But to have this life he has to play politics with Beeston and Rogers coorporate. For a brief moment Wilner gave us some honesty, he stood up to Cito Gaston. Then everything he held dear was threatened. Wilner realized he was living a dream life, and there were literally hundreds of other people who could do it. So now he just plays the game. Yeah he talks like an imbecible. But here is his choice. 1. Be an idiot and feel very secure in his lottery life. 2. Be smart and honest and have to deal with occasional threats to his way of life. What would you choose?? Your telling me you'd give it all up, say what's really on your mind, act intelligent, tell the Beest where to go?? Or would you just give Rogers the product they want for mass consumption by the casuals??

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Pretty stupid post really. So what do you think?? Wilner is genuine?? You think Rogers would want a sophisticated, smart, and edgy post-game host that will confront the organization head on if needed?? And they haven't found the guy. Wilner's simple, stupid, positive act is just his personality. There's been no instruction from Rogers suits for him to be more "friendly" so to say?? His little suspension after the Cito incident didn't really happen?? If you think the point is stupid argue it. I'd be interested to hear. Maybe I've got Wilner pegged wrong. You don't really say much. Like a lot of people.
GD Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Bob McCown is pretty much everything you're describing and I don't think his 'way of life' is exactly endangered right now.
Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Bob McCown is pretty much everything you're describing and I don't think his 'way of life' is exactly endangered right now. Excellent point. I have pondered McCown... he literally has said that Cito Gaston is a rotting pile of manure, that Cito Gaston is one of the most Despicable and evil human beings Bob McCown "I think he’s just such a despicable human being that I can’t be—I can’t judge his decisions fairly." (http://blogs.thescore.com/djf/2010/10/01/talkin%E2%80%99-managers-mccown-opens-up-on-cito-assessing-baylor-wedge/) So Wilner gets a suspension but no one would ever touch McCown for slamming Cito. Obviously McCown has something... whether he has dirt on someone, or he's just an alpha dog... or he just doesn't care about anything... I don't know. I would say the third. I would say McCown just doesn't care. If you've gone through a segment of your life where you don't care you'll get this. When you don't care you get everything you want. If you don't care about some girl, she's yours. You don't care about your job, you get a promotion. So McCown is inhuman somehow. He really doesn't care. Wilner is a different dog. He occupies a different place in the dog pound.
Sammy225 Old-Timey Member Posted June 19, 2013 Posted June 19, 2013 Really the only analyst that I can really stand to listen too is Heyhurst. Only because he is the only one who is not buying into the HOMERZ that JPA hits and points out what his real problem is. He still has his WTF moments but for the most part he is pretty accurate and does not sugar coat things for the casual fans.

Put it this way. Rogers suspends McCown, he probably quits on the spot and goes somewhere else, he slams Rogers relentlessly. He's well connected and he gets revenge. If you mess with McCown he's not going to forget. He's going to get you... and you'll live the rest of your life wondering when. You think anyone would feel the same about Wilner?? Live in fear that Wilner would get them somehow??

I also have liked Jack Morris. Way better then I thought he would be. Has mentioned plate discipline in his own folksy way several times. "Nothing wrong with taking a few pitches, take a look at things, you might get a walk and that's not always a bad thing."

Abomination Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 Btw I wanted to clarify that Wilner is being an idiot on Lind being able to qualify for BA in the next week... not even close. Lind currently has 191 AB. The currently qualifying minimum is 220 (3.1 x 71 games played). In 7 more games, Lind will have roughly 219 AB and the new qualifying minimum will be 242. It will actually take about / at least 30 consecutive games for Lind to qualify (assuming he gets an average of 4 AB per game).... so 3.1 x 101 games played = 313. And Lind will be at around 311 AB (191 AB + 30*4). Lind has been averaging about 4.5 per game since he's been in the lineup regularly. He also currently has 213 PA coming into today (it's 3.1 PA, NOT AB).

Olerud363 Old-Timey Member Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 Don't mean to bud in but I agree with this, wilners not an idiot. As for Mccown, he doesn't do jays talk right? so why exactly would he be suspended lol... McCown seemed to be more aggressive, actually insulting Cito's character, calling him despicable. Wilner just asked a question in a snarky tone. As far as I know McCown never got as much as a slap on the wrist and in fact still freely insults Cito when he feels like it. Wilner got a suspension. The concern at the time was that Rogers was effectively muzzling Wilner. Should Rogers punish Wilner while letting McCown do whatever he wants?? Your bring up a good point. McCown didn't interact with the team and Gaston on a regular basis... Wilner does. Thus the reason for more punishment. Anyway I hated the incident when it happened. I still do. Rogers lost my business that day. Showed me what Rogers is made of and the lack of character in their upper management. I will always have a soft spot for Wilner in a weird way. To me he is just the guy who made the choice we all have to. His cheer leading and Rogers aplogizing on jays talk is just his job. And it's a good one he doesn't want to lose. Another day, another dollar, working for the man. Rogers, or atleast elements of Rogers, are the true enemy. A despicable group that treated our boy Mike so badly and robbed us forever of a legitamite Jays talk.

McCowan got fired and replaced by Mark Hebscher twice. First on radio and then by Global TV. His act was wearing thin. He was also the original PA announcer for the Blue Jays and lost that gig too.
Caper Verified Member Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 I haven't listened to the last few Jays talks.... but if there is one thing I know about Wilner is that above all else he is a humble guy. There is no way he would have mentioned that he told fans all along to relax... or mocked all the callers who called earlier in the season and complained.... he's just to humble a guy for that.
