And all I'm saying is is stupid to think that he's gong to be an impact defensive LFer. The are like 5 players in each league that can do that.

Never said impact. I said he can be a overall above average LF and put up 3 WAR which is very valuable. Now that might be his celing but he has a higher chance to at least be a contributor at the MLB level and that would be a success for a guy who was drafted where he was.

Side note- Sean Reid Foley went 3 IP with 4H 0BB 6SO. If thats his last start that is a good way to finish off the season.

Very nice line for SRF.

September call up?

Not likely as it would take a 40 man roster spot. On the other hand doesn't Pompey need a spot this winter?

Does anyone think Pompey can make the jump next year? Pretty huge leap but if we are going to lose i,d much rather lose with the kids

You start him in the minors and if he dominates AAA you maybe bring him up in May/June. Delay that service time clock.

So is Graveman a real prospect or what?

Regardless, still pretty promising to have another young pitcher zoom through the system like he has. Wonder if they pull a Nestor Molina and sell high.

24 years old, ordinary stuff, low K rate = nothing to see here.

Selling high might be the best thing we can do, but dammit do I love ground ball machines. I'd really like to see what he can do.

Gary Allenson calls him a "soft tosser" among other things, despite reports he's up to 94/95 with heavy sink this season. Now I'm confused.

Sounds like he wits 88-90. He seems like a good depth guy to have as a 6th starter in case someone gets hurt and can give you 4-5 starts a season. If the Blue Jays can get something of value for him I would hope they trade him. These type of pitchers are usually pretty easy to find.

He's not the good version of Joe Blanton.

Alford got great reviews for his play coming in for the 4th quarter of the Boise State game. This might be the best secondary in the NCAA so he's going to have to battle for PT. Coach Freeze has him returning punts and taking snaps in the wildcat. 4 of Ole Miss starting DB's are seniors...so he's going to get lots of playing time next year...and coach Freeze is still saying he'll be a pro football player if he doesn't choose baseball. Continuing in Alford's poor decision making (although stealing money from the Jays to play for month or two each year isn't one of his poor decisions) he got married this winter.

BA's Helium Watch from last week had this to say.

Helium Watch

Kendall Graveman, rhp, Blue Jays: Just more than a year ago, Graveman was starting the first game of the College World Series finals for Mississippi State, and he was the lone consistent starter the Bulldogs had on their wild ride to Omaha. An eighth-round pick as a senior who signed for just $5,000, Graveman wasn’t on the radar for the Jays entering 2014. He made four starts at low Class A but has joined the Blue Jays’ parade of fast-tracked prospects, making at least one start all the way up to Triple-A Buffalo. The 6-foot-2, 195-pound sinkerballer has added a cutter this year and pounds the zone with 90-92 mph fastballs that work over the bottom of the zone, as he did in this week’s start—seven scoreless innings, no walks, four hits, four strikeouts.

Graveman has allowed more than two earned runs in a start twice all year en route to a 12-6, 1.68 composite line across four levels, with just two home runs allowed (to Adam Brett Walker and Nick Franklin) in 155 innings. His strikeout ratio of 6.2 per nine innings isn’t loud, but his 3.69 SO/BB ratio and 1.00 WHIP serve notice he could contribute in Toronto soon as a back-of-the-rotation option.

Jeez, if he provides anything to the big club from the 8th round for a $5,000 signing bonus you gotta be happy.

Legit thought that King posted a pic of this guy from Blood Diamond:

Who the hell gets married at 20 years old? This has disaster written all over it.

Huh? He's a definite legit prospect. Just look at Hendo in MIA.

Alvarez averages ~93 mph on his fastball and tops out at 97 mph. Its not the same thing.

Posted
I was talking about the K rates not the FB velo.

Yeah, but Alvarez is successful because his fastball is overpowering, which is why his low K-rates aren't a problem. Projecting Graveman's fastball to be anywhere near as valuable as Alvarez's is a giant stretch, which makes the entire comparison moot. If you look at FanGraphs' standardized Pitch Value ratings; Alvarez's fastball is tied for 8th among starters league wide. That is why he is successful despite low strikeout rates.

He's successful because he gets a lot of GBs and his FB has heavy sink. The velo certainly helps. if you want a successful softosser with low K rates just look at Buehrle. If Graveman can keep up the GB rates he has a shot to be a serviceable backend starter. Definitely a legit prospect.

Buehrle is pretty exceptional though. He has plus plus defense and a plus plus pickoff move. All those extra outs are really the secret to his success. Hard model to emulate.
