jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 29, 2013 Posted July 29, 2013 The problem I have with his type of player is that there's no upside. Andrus isn't going to have a fluke power year and hit 15 bombs, or raise that average to .310. I also don't really care much about position scarcity until the later rounds. There's really no upside with him in fantasy baseball. It's not like he's going to steal 60-70 bases like Ellsbury or Reyes have in the past. Doubt he ever reachers double digits in home runs as well like you said. I just find it shocking that he's always a top 100 pick every year in fantasy baseball - I just don't understand why.

Just looking at our PL draft this year, Andrus 95th Assdribble 97th (has been a bit worse) Rutledge in the 6th (terrible) Espinosa in the 7th Jeter in the 8th Alcides in the 9th Aybar and Hardy in the 10th Andrus just always exists at the edge of the cliff for optically viable SS options. It's take him in the 5th round and have a relatively safe option based on the SB, or you can just punt the position / play the lottery.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 I would disagree with your statement that Asdrubal has been worse than Andrus. Andrus is a deathblow to your SLG, so many dinky ABs. I'll take the solid across the board of Asdrubal any day. A 103 wRC+ is actually quite decent for a SS, and he's Top 5 in SS wRC+ over the last 3 years while still in his prime. Yahoo ranks are, of course, irrelevant to our league.

AVG/OBP are basically the same. The value of Andrus' extra stolen bases very probably nukes whatever advantage Asdrubal would get from better SLG. They are basically the same this year though for all intensive porpoises.

He hasn't run at all this season, though his other numbers are lightyears better than the other shortstops. A .335/.396/.613 slash line along with 19 HR and 59 RBI despite missing time this season is pretty darn good. He missed a good chunk of last season, though he's a solid bet for 130-140 games to go 30/100 with a .900 + OPS and from a shortstop thats terrific production. He's not a consensus top 5 pick anymore since he doesn't run that much, though he's definitely a great pick between 10-20 or even as a later pick in the top 10. I think I took him 14th in this league and I don't regret it. I was debating between him and Justin Upton at the time in that slot.
jaysblue Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 I'd still take Asdrubal over Andrus anyday of the week. If I want 30-40 SB with a sub .700 OPS, I'll go after a Rajai Davis or Jarrod Dyson in like the last rounds or pluck them off the waiver wire.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Me and Kat just pulled off a blockbuster: To Kat: Ryan Zimmerman and Jon Lester To Me: Jose Fernandez It will hurt my playoff push this year, but I am in love with Jose so I can live with that.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 That's a lot to pay for Fernandez. But I agree, I'm also a big fan of Jose, he's gonna be a top pitcher for a long time. I think you did a good job aquiring him this year, after seeing what he is doing, his value is only going to rise.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Or his arm will explode from a massive workload increase. Either way I want to build a shrine to him. BAMF.
Fearthedoc Verified Member Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 That's a steep price for Fernandez but considering you have Cabrera at 3B it makes sense. It's hard not to pull the trigger on a 20 year old in a dynasty league who has put up 2.5 fWAR through 20 starts.
KingKat Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Or his arm will explode from a massive workload increase. Either way I want to build a shrine to him. BAMF. Weird trade for a fringe playoff team to make with the frontrunner but my team was built for today so no point in backing off now. The fact that it hurts the chances of the front-runner is kind of a fringe benefit. I am still looking to move prospects/picks to bolster my chances. I could still use another bat and some more starting pitching. My system is very thin but I still have a couple of name prospects and all my picks to move. I'm all in.
Fearthedoc Verified Member Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 The fact that it hurts the chances of the front-runner is kind of a fringe benefit Yeah I just thought about this and agree that it's a pretty massive blow. Fernandez probably gets shutdown and provides nothing in the playoffs. So this year it's basically subtracting Zimmerman and Lester for nothing in crunch time.

Fernandez probably gets shutdown and provides nothing in the playoffs. So this year it's basically subtracting Zimmerman and Lester for nothing in crunch time. That's exactly what it is, but my hope is that Fernandez will out-produce Lester until he gets shut down, and that Morse provides similar production to Zimmerman. It's all a crapshoot once you get into the playoffs anyway.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 I also had to move Morse off the DL, so I wanted to do a 2-for-1. By the time Jose gets deactivated, Pineda should be called up, so in a perfect world scenario I can just flip those two on my NA slot and avoid another roster crunch.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 My personal feeling is that Fernandez will be a perennial Cy Young contender as long as he stays healthy. I'd put him right up there with Bumgarner on my depth chart, maybe even better as soon as next year.

Lester doesn't seem to be going back to the borderline number 1, great number 2 option he was.
The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Fernandez could possibly very well be the next Felix Hernandez. They do pretty much have the same last name...
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 30, 2013 Author Posted July 30, 2013 If any other contenders have a premium starting pitcher to dangle and need a top outfielder, I've made Shin-Soo Choo available. I like Choo a lot but have enough other guys keeping my ratios afloat. Uber-elite in runs and OBP, solid contributer in everything else. Not saying you definitely won't find a match, but just to comment, the OF market seems to be over-saturated right now, and the SP market is pretty thin.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 Choo would have been a great fit for BTS before he got Trumbo. I love Choo, he can anchor your team's OBP.
Dr. Dinger Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 The Uphill Gardners are no more!
Fearthedoc Verified Member Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 With only three OF slots it seems the OF market will always be fairly saturated. I think Choo's the special type of player who rises above that. He's an easy #1-calibre OF. I'd also be interested in trading prospects/picks. Can people update their trade blocks? I'll be all over this when Granderson inevitably fractures his finger again a week after returning.

The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted July 30, 2013 Posted July 30, 2013 He's in the 12-18 range of OFers IMO, so would be a #1 on a lot of teams. But on a contender more of a #2, sure. A great guy to have since he produces in all seven categories and is elite among all hitters in OBP and runs. Ya, I just looked.. He would be a top 20. I'm gonna have some sexy OF next year with Gomez, Puig, Hamilton, and Martin or Yelich for a #4.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 30, 2013 Author Posted July 30, 2013 I'm gonna have some sexy OF next year with Gomez, Puig, Hamilton, and Martin or Yelich for a #4. Or, you know, not. Gomez: Was once terrible. Could easily once again be terrible. Hamilton: Is terrible. Puig: Cuban Jeff Francoeur. Martin: Not a great fantasy player.

The Cats Ass Old-Timey Member Posted July 31, 2013 Posted July 31, 2013 Pretty good with potential to be great, but probably in the 5-8 range of DDL outfields for next year. Ahead of yours I'd have therealmin (Stanton, Jones, Rios, Holliday), me (McCutchen, Kemp, Choo, Carter), Dinger (C. Davis, Bourn, Craig), and silvergun (CarGo, Bruce, De Aza). Your team has some real pieces to build around, maybe the best 2014 team among current non-contenders. therealmin (Stanton, Jones, Rios, Holliday) - That is a real nice OF, Best for sure. me (McCutchen, Kemp, Choo, Carter) - I'd be concerned about Kemp just as much as Hamilton, and Carter is leading the league in SO and hitting .220. Dinger (C. Davis, Bourn, Craig) - Davis hasn't played the OF yet this year, so no OF eligibility for next year, that's a big hit to his OF. silvergun (CarGo, Bruce, De Aza) - Another nice one, I'd consider this probably the 2nd best OF.
Laika Community Moderator Posted July 31, 2013 Author Posted July 31, 2013 Jonathan Villar just stole home, pretty cool play. Had him on my draft shortlist for the last like, 3 or 4 rounds in June. Was pretty pleased to grab him off the FA pile after he got added to the Yahoo DB. 5 SB already in 8 games. Zobrist is on the block!
