In the end, he will like the player at a certain value that will be below where everyone else values him.

We should be glad to have a GM that refuses to overpay and spend money wrecklessly. :P

I wouldn't mind signing either Halladay or Oswalt as projects. Despite their age, both obviously have tremendous upside and probably won't cost much.

Halladay is a tricky situation. Here is a short, cryptic article on his "underlying health issues." Really I believe it is just a matter of how hard he can throw now. I think if he is healthy the command will be there.

What on earth is up with the Dodgers signing expensive relievers?

As opposed to Oakland and Tampa Bay acquiring expensive relievers ? Thought I'd bring this up because the selective approach people take to

analyzing moves is getting way out of hand. Teams that are supposably "smart" get a free pass when they make moves counter to some of the

overcooked theories on here. Those that are "failing" get deeply criticized for similar moves.

Firstly Lee, there was a lot of head scratching over the expensive relievers that Oakland and TB brought in. No one got a free pass.

Secondly Lee, why wouldn't you give at least some benefit of the doubt to teams that have a good track record? When evaluating TB's acquisition of Bell why shouldn't the track record of the gm figure in the analysis. The fact that they apparently saw something in Fernando Rodney that no one else seemed to see is not somthing that should be just ignored. The possibility that they see something similar in Rodney is A REAL POSSIBILITY not just wishful thinking.

Finally, maybe you should try to live up to you Cooler Heads Prevail name instead of being a dumb reactionary or failing that just call yourself Lee_Marvin again.

Tampa did it as part of the cost of getting another asset. The Oakland deal imo is still a questionable one.

lol

The Rays took on $5.5 million for a durable reliever who had a 3.08 xFIP last year. And they also go Ryan Hanigan for doing it.

The Athletics took on $10 million for a guy with two consecutive 50+ save seasons and three consecutive sub-3 ERA seasons. That's a monster deadline trade chip.

The Dodgers committed $19 million to guy who has thrown 16 innings over the last two years. If you can't see that this is clearly the worst decision of the three I'm not sure what to tell you.

Dude..... Your better than this, dudes trollin' or he is legitimately ignorant

I made no statement about whether these deals were good or bad. It's the approach you take to analyzing moves, no objectivity at all. When you take it to extremes, it's absurd. Sure, the Rays might have got a "durable reliever". Durable sounds like a pretty positive description, it's the Rays right ?

Would make my 2nd favourite team more enjoyable to watch... and open up trade possibilities with the jays. Money is no longer an issue for them, although they would 99% likely regret this contract within 5 years from now.

IF Cano really is the age he says he is, and IF the Mariners front load the contract heavily enough (and they certainly appear to have the financial ability to front load it), it might not be terrible for them.

I think creating a thread for thins would be pushing it

lol I read that as Mariners on the first take.

LOL get fans all worked up for Cano then sign Furcal.

He actually did make that mistake, hence why Marlins is capitalized. Got LOTS of people worked out.... imagine the Mariners fans, going from Cano to Furcal LOL

Rangers Moving Toward Deal With J.P. Arencibia

By Charlie Wilmoth [December 5 at 10:45pm CST]

Catcher J.P. Arencibia and the Rangers are moving in the direction of striking a deal, FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal writes (on Twitter). The Rangers reportedly were close to trading for Arencibia before the Blue Jays non-tendered him. Earlier this week, MLB.com's T.R. Sullivan reported that the Rangers would have been willing to make the trade if Arencibia had agreed to a contract that would have avoided arbitration. MLBTR estimated that Arencibia would have made $2.8MM in the arbitration process, so his deal with the Rangers, assuming it happens, will likely be for less than that.

Arencibia will presumably back up Geovany Soto in Texas. Arencibia hit just .194/.227/.365 in 2013 and is unlikely to ever hit for much of an average, but with his power, he can be effective if he bats above .215 or so, as he did in 2011 and 2012. He has 62 home runs in the past three seasons, and hitting in Arlington should help him add to that total.

Thoughts

No. Too Arencibia-ish and expensive.

The team is finally deliberately targeting guys who don't strike out a ton so let's keep that going.

Would someone be able to explain, or post that link that explains the ~9M/win in FA concept?

What is everyone's thought on Morse? He had a brutal year last year but worth a look at? His price took a huge blow.

Haven't heard his name at all this offseason

The winter meetings are going to suck this year now that so much has already happened.

I've always liked his bat, and he'd be a great power bat off the bench. Though he is awful defensively. I'd prefer the Jays to go after Ruggiano who could split DH duties with Lind and at least could play all 3 outfield positions.

Unless that was just a taste of the crazy s*** that's going to go down.

That would be nice.
