I wonder how she'd take it if she found out some of us "fans" want him to become a starter again regardless if he flames out or gets hurt because of it. Edited by Slot Machine

You said it yourself most closers are only short-term solutions. Why would you go out and sign them to big money long term deals? Especially when they are also the easiest to acquire?

The key point for me would be distinguishing the true "quality" closers versus everyone else. I agree signing mediocre even average closers to longer term expensive deals is bad business. The hard decisions are where you draw the line on what is quality. I never would have signed BJ Ryan for example, I felt bad about his contract and Burnett's contract before they ever pitched for the Jays. Neither guy really got the Jays going.

The realities of baseball ( some closers do get big money ) suggest this forum isn't entirely realistic on this topic. What I would say is if we took some of the consensus ideas that get repeated often ( eg closers are easily replaceable, replacement players shouldn't get roster spots, ... ) and started putting red marks on every baseball GM that broke these rules of thumb, there wouldn't be much of anybody left without a red mark. Perhaps supply and demand means you have to overpay big somewhere to win.

Janssen is great because he's been consistantly clutch and fairly cheap. Unless somebody wants him bad, you just let him pitch in 2014 and be happy.

I think I hate Jennifer Cecil.

If I cared enough I certainly would too.

Paying like $13 million per projected WAR on a 5-year deal is bad, right?

Hopefully this'll help some of the Santana supporters veer away from him as an option.

What would you think of Nolasco at 80/5? I think it's too much but I think at the right price he's interesting.

It went right over your head that despite all the new closers this year that there is still a strong free agent market for the same. And I'll add one point, the nature of the position is almost every year you get guys who suddenly become effective in the role for a year maybe two, then they lose the job.

That's the case for relievers in general. Guys like Papelbon or Rivera are few and far between. Another thing, who cares if they flame out? Just replace with the next guy. Lidge started to suck, replaced by Madson, who, shocker, continued being good. Wilson had his trouble, replaced by Romo. Valverde > Benoit. Nathan > Capps > Perkins (failed starter.)

Bottom line, investing in a closer is almost always a bad idea and an inefficient use of funds. Amaro Jr. paying Papelbon 10 million per season isn't proof of anything other than what is already obvious (he's a bad GM and stupid man.)

Burnett was a fine signing that worked out on the whole. Not like you'd actually do anything past a paper-thin analysis.

The Reds have agreed to a two-year contract with catcher Brayan Pena.

Devin Mesoraco or Ryan Hanigan available?

Isn't Mesoraco a starter? Hanigan looks like he can be a back-up or starter, even though last year he was s***.

In 2012 though he hit pretty well for a part-time catcher

Mesoraco was a name that was often tied to the Jays the year he was drafted. It's been speculated that the Jays would have taken him instead of Ahrens had he still been on the board. They also had interest in D'Arnaud from the same draft class whom they eventually acquired. I could see the Jays in on this but how the Reds feel about him is unclear. He is purpotedly their catcher of the future but he hasn't exactly set the world on fire so far.

He has all of a 70 career wRC+. Idk, I feel like Hanigan would be better.

An anonymous MLB official told Adam Kilgore that Shelby Miller may be an under the radar trade target, fwiw.

Carlos Martinez "The GM and manager told me that Wacha, Miller and I have a spot in the St. Louis rotation for the next season......Rosenthal probably continue working out of the bullpen"

I don't want an inexperienced young catcher right now though either. I want a VETERAN BOSS behind the plate. Confidence for vets like Dickey and Buerhle, good influence on the younger guys.

With our luck, Boni will probably put up 3+ war next year and everyone will be crying about how we let him go.

Then we must extract Ervin Santana

(I'm convinced he's the best we can hope for in terms of a starter)
