What if we traded for Civale right now and use him for 6 weeks, and then we can trade him again at the deadline?

Some penny pincher will take him and we can go after a bigger fish.

In five starts his season, Civale has a 4.29 ERA (4.30 FIP) and a mediocre 15.2% strikeout minus walk rate. He's been particularly susceptible to the long ball this season as he's given up five home runs across 22 innings pitched. Civale is making $8 million this season, which will be prorated based on his service time this season, and will be entering free agency at seasons end.

Let Civale build up his trade value. Pitching with the Blue Jays bats heating up, gold glove defense behind him and rock solid BP, he'll rack up some wins and Atkins could likely squeeze another team for more at the trade deadline.

Civale to the White Sox for Andrew Vaughn - interesting return! I wonder if a change of scenery will help Vaughn, or if he's a lost cause.

Is it funny or mean that Civale requested a trade and was immediately exiled to the White Sox? Or is it both?

I mean - he's not very good and bitched about losing his rotation spot. He should likely be thrilled to join the White Sox as it's one of the few teams in baseball he can remain a starter for the rest of the year.

This is a weird trade.

Vaughn makes 5.85M this year. I think he'll have 2 years of control left since he was demoted this year. But he's on his way to being non-tendered.
Civale makes 8 mil this year and is a FA after the year. He projects a little better but he has diminishing stuff.

Not sure what the point of the White Sox is in acquiring Civale but maybe they think they can flip him at the deadline for something? Civale might get you a 19 year old Dominican prospect at the deadline whereas Vaughn wouldn't?

I wouldn't read too much into his stat line this year. The Brewers did a nice job of getting him back on track last season and he only has 22 IP in 2025.

The money was made even on it so that's not a factor.

I think from the White Sox perspective, they have probably explored Vaughn trades and realize he has no value at all. Civale might be able to salvage a modicum of trade value between now and the deadline.

From the Brewers perspective, perhaps they think the bat they can stick in AAA is a bit better for them than a surly Aaron Civale in long relief? They presently have Ashby and Hall in the pen and those guys have good stuff and can go 3 innings. So Civale is pointless.

I'm not sure I agree. He wasn't very good with the Brewers last year. His stats were propped up by a low BABIP and a high LOB%.

He isn't very good, which is why he was just traded for Andrew Vaughn

Maybe we're talking past each other a bit. I agree he isn't very good, but he's serviceable. I wouldn't want Aaron Civale starting a playoff game for me but I'd be very comfortable with him in the fifth rotation spot, maybe the fourth if I grimace a bit.
