If we wait until 2021 to spend on free agents, the contracts will overlap with Cavan/Bo/Vlads arbitration years. There goes the “financial flexibility”. Right now would exactly be the time to splurge on a 3-4 year deal. It would expire just as the core is hitting their expensive years.

I'd quite comfortably do 3 years $60M for Ryu, and I don't think any other team beats that unless the Angels miss out on Cole and get desperate. Attach a vesting option for a 4th year and incentives for innings pitched. I truly think that would get it done. Ryu, Lindblom, and Tsutsugo would be a great offseason all things considered. That would look much closer to a .500 team, and maybe with a couple breakouts even wildcard contention. I'd definitely be excited.

Is their OF defense even that big of an issue? They've basically gained Randal Grichuk in return for Tommy Pham. It may work out in the long run with Edwards, but for next year it's a downgrade, unless Renfroe makes a gigantic leap

I'm not so sure this is a clear of a win for the Rays as much as their other trades. Depends on what they do for the rest of the offseason, but one of the OF spots has clearly been downgraded for next season as a result of this

Rays are so cheap they can’t afford to pay Pham $9M? I like Edwards, but Renfroe is such a downgrade from Pham, especially when they’re supposedly in their competitive window right now.

I’d consider Riley Adams who’s coming off a strong year. Kirk and Moreno make him a little redundant. If he nets you your 1B if the future, that’s a W.

If I were Atkins, I'd be calling the Mets right now to offer salary relief in return for Dom Smith. Dom Smith + Jed Lowrie for Richard Urena.
