  1. Smoaks contract is not nearly as bad as people make it out to be. He's a $4 million/yr switch hitter with pop that is okay defensively, and in a good year can put up between 1-1.3 WAR. Teams won't be necessarily be bending over backwards to land him, but he is no where near the trade anchor that people make him out to be.
  2. People do realize that we're not going to have MVP-calibre players in every position right? Not only that, it's not like there are better options left. Brandon Moss isn't exactly known for his plate discipline either. The thinking behind getting Carter would be that A) He's a marginally better version than Justin Smoak who can hit a ton of home runs. He'll come on a dirt cheap 1 year deal. We could probably nab him for $5-6 million I'd want to make sure we could unload Smoak before we think of getting Carter though.
  3. I say we get em' back by signing Chris Carter. And then if Smoak could somehow be flipped for a backup catcher, that would be ideal.
  4. 2017 Top 10 First Base prospects: http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2017/?list=1b 1. Cody Bellinger (LAD) 2. Josh Bell (PIT) 3. Dominic Smith (NYM) 4. Bobby Bradley (CLE) 5. Casey Gillaspie (TBR) 6. Rowdy Tellez (TOR) 7. Ronald Guzman (TEX) 8. Matt Thaiss (LAA) 9. Rhys Hoskins (PHI) 10. Sam Travis (BOS) Tellez ranked #10 in the 2016 list, so a decent jump Also, his scouting report and grades:
  5. That Desmond deal might go down as the worst deal of the offseason. Awful.
  6. Would you rather have Morales at 3/33, or Trumbo at 3/37? I'd say that's a solid deal for the O's.
  7. Steve Selsky DFA'd by the Reds. He's had a decent minor league career and slashed .314/.340/.471 with the Reds last season, albeit in a very limited capacity. Wouldn't mind pick him up instead of someone like Ceciliani for minor league depth.
  8. So between McGuire and Pentacost, we have a catcher who can't hit, and a hitter who can't catch. Excellent.
  9. 2017 Top 10 catching prospects: http://m.mlb.com/prospects/2017?list=c 1. Carson Kelly (STL) 2. Francisco Mejia (CLE) 3. Jorge Alfaro (PHI) 4. Zack Collins (CWS) 5. Chance Sisco (BAL) 6. Reese McGuire (TOR) 7. Tom Murphy (COL) 8. Austin Barnes (LAD) 9. Jose Trevino (TEX) 10. Jacob Nottingham (MIL) McGuire dropped 2 spots. He was ranked #4 in the 2016 list. Also, his scouting report and grades:
  10. How crazy of an idea would it be to try and get Joba Chamberlain on a minor league deal for bullpen depth? Seemed to do well for the Indians last season, although only 20IP.
  11. He had a down year, but his career OBP against righties is .347. Better than Zeke. Zero pop though. You're not getting any HR's from him. Just throwing ideas out there. We only have about ~5 million to work with and he would've been good for league minimum.
  12. Gregor Blanco just signed a minor league deal with the DBacks. Definitely wouldn't have minded him in a platoon with Upton, especially for that cheap.
  13. Valbuena could be a fit in LF as well. Not a primary outfielder, but he's made starts there.
  14. If we do end up having a $165 million budget, I highly doubt it'll all be taken up opening day. Probably looking at $160 million on opening day to allow for a little flexibility throughout the season. Meaning we only have $5-6 million to play with right now.
  15. Only 29 too, and has good upside. I don't see any reason not to.
  16. If we do get rid of Smoak, we'd probably take on another player with similar salary or more. I don't think Smoak is the right guy to be trading if you want salary relief. Maybe the Mets take him for something. They lost out on James Loney who's basically Smoak v2 and need some 1B depth. $4 million is really nothing in the grand scheme of things.
  17. Wonder if we'd be able to get Austin Jackson on a minor league deal. I'd be willing to take a flier on him. Even for $1-2 million or so. He's not a lefty hitter, but has good splits all around.
  18. I mean, Josh Thole IS still on the market. And he is left handed........
  19. Saunders knees probably buckled from the shockwaves caused by me typing this post.
  20. Scouts on Tellez:
  21. No more outfielders are happening unless we unload some cash.
  22. If you told me at the beginning of 2016 that we would get Bautista for $18 million in 2017 and 2 first round draft picks I'd be pretty content. Now add a lefty like Blevins or Wood and you're set.
  23. It is a 2018 mutual option. So it's practically a 1-year deal.
  24. They're saying mutual option, but make it sound like it's more of a vesting option with all the incentives and such.
