  1. Word is Sonny Gray scratched from scheduled start with no apparent reason - could be a trade about to be finalized (rumor is Cubs are after him).
  2. Morales + $10M cash for impending free agent Cain? Might have worked if the Royals hadn't played themselves back into the wild card race, but now I don't think so.
  3. Pearce is a good guy to have around for his bat. As far as being the best? I will still give it to Trout The problem I see for the Jays moving forward is that Pearce is not a very good LFer; but 1B, where he should be playing, is occupied by Smoak. Maybe they should trade one of them. Or even better, unload Morales and let Pearce DH (may help him stay off the DL if he doesn't have to play D).
  4. Interesting. I vaguely recall him being insulted by their preliminary contract offers, complaining that they didn't appreciate his contributions to the championship runs. But like how Ortiz had his issues with Red Sox management but was able to set it aside, probably Sandoval should have done the same. Oh well, he will get his money anyway and probably a chance to rejuvenate his career elsewhere.
  5. This also reminds me of the ongoing discussion of free agents going for the biggest payday instead of taking a fair offer from their current (or another) team where they may feel more comfortable playing. Look at how going to Boston for the big bucks has backfired on the likes of Crawford, Price, Sandoval (just DFA'ed). Price to the Cards and Sandoval staying with the Giants (I recall they made him a pretty good offer) probably would have worked out so much better for these guys. Crawford, who knows, I guess it was more the injuries than anything but the Boston pressure cooker likely played a role in his career meltdown.
  6. Pillar for Yelich seems interesting but unlikely to see Yelich traded (see below). Jays would probably have to include a good prospect to get this one done. Would giving them Pillar and Urena be too much for Yelich? Not sure how Urena might fit in the Jays future plans with Warmouth and Bichette as other possibilities at SS. I agree with the thinking, BUT on Monday the report from an interview of Marlins president said they were looking to retain Yelich, Ozuna, and Realmuto. https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/07/marlins-trade-rumors-stanton-yelich-ozuna.html Probably, this means it won't be easy to swing a trade for Yelich without giving them top prospects, or as you say, taking on a bunch of "Miami's trash". Probably, Gordon shouldn't be put in the trash category (on pace for ~ 3 fWAR). I wouldn't want to take on 2-3 bad contracts to add to those of Tulo and Morales, and to a lesser extent Martin, just to get one good player unless Rogers is willing to go to $200M payroll. In that case maybe going with free agents for the short term may be better. Yes with a team that has a chance to contend if things fall into place while having financial commitment from ownership to plug the holes with veterans until the young guys are ready to step in, there is no reason the Jays need to tank rather than a Red Sox / Yankees type retool.
  7. He could go Ben Revere. But then there is Jarrod Dyson (about to turn 33) who a lot of people on this forum wanted. Of course it's the 3 year commitment that is problematic. I suppose you could get the speed in a much cheaper player and hopefully one with solid D and some positional flexibility which Gordon does not provide (the flexibility).
  8. Yeah if the Jays don't have to give up any top prospects to get Gordon, he seems like a logical pick up if they intend on remaining competitive throughout the next few years. The rumors were that, as you indicated, this is a move for the Marlins to shed some salary and might not require much in return if the Jays take on the full salary commitment (10.5, 13, 13.5M in years 2018-2020 with team option for 14M in 2021 (1M buyout) which vests if he gets 600 PA in 2020 or 1200 PA combined in 2019-20). He is on pace for 3 WAR this season, so if he can provide 2 WAR per season moving forward that wouldn't be such a money burn. Also he is a pretty good defender, so that helps. But having that legitimate speed guy in the lineup would be a huge boost to this Jays offense. He could be exactly the kind of offensive spark plug they have been sorely lacking. I agree Harrison is an attractive target with the positional flexibility His salary is a little less than Gordon and he is a better hitter although without the disruptive speed of a Gordon. Talk is the Pirates want to try to remain competitive rather than any kind of rebuild, so they probably will have a high asking price in a Harrison trade. ETA: I wonder how Devon Travis would do in left field?
  9. So everyone is just supposed to stop watching because the team is having an off year ? Good things can still happen, like yesterday's game. And your post makes it sound like you aren't even a real Jays fan. Maybe time to GTFO.
  10. OK 20 WAR (an optimistic outcome) at about $8M per, is worth about $160M. My suggestion of a contract that could get him $155M is in line with that. If someone else is willing to overpay above that, they would be pretty foolish. If the Jays can't sign him this offseason, they should definitely try hard to trade him.
  11. It was thought that someone would 'overpay" for Encarnacion, but that never happened. Between the FA experiences of EE and JB along with some others this past offseason, Donaldson may be willing to listen to reason, not a silly agent or MLBPA or whoever else may want to talk him into holding out for a king's ransom. Question is what is a team friendly contract in this case? I was thinking that IF he can have a good finish to this season, and the Jays intend to try to remain competitive in 2018, while infusing youth to the roster in a step-wise manner, they should make a run at signing Donaldson. I would offer him 4 years / $125M (starting in 2018) with a 5th year option for $30M or $5M buyout.
  12. Well it was a great game for the Jays, so congrats to those who got to see it in person. Nice call! Also, thanks for giving me another chance to remain a member on this forum:) Go Jays !!
  13. No just f***ing pissed off and lashing out. I wish I had never started addressing that s***.
  14. And if someone called your post the most insane thing they ever rerad on the board you would respond with a thank you. Mr Smoak band wagon jumper
  15. And you can go f*** yourself too! ETA and why don't you show everyone what a big man you are with your moderator powers
  16. It's a long season dumby. You don't need to go all out to win every game. It's called having some class. And BTW, go f*** yourself!
  17. Naw, I don't think they should have done whatever it takes to win and sweep us on our Canada Day weekend, especially with the Yankees fading and their hold on 1st in the division starting to solidify. It's ok, karma has a way of taking care of these things. I wouldn't be surprised to see them s*** the bed in the ALDS again. Will be easy to cheer for whoever is up against them (even if it is the Rangers who I loathe).
  18. Lucking into a wild card might mean 85 or 86 wins. It took 88 wins last year. With Jays about to finish the 1st half at 37-44, they would need to go 48-33 to get to 85 wins. So that would suggest they are playing well enough to compete should they make the post season. Remember, at this point in the 2015 season, the Rangers were being written off for dead and the trade for Hamels was seen as a move for 2016. Not that I am advocating for any acquistions unless it is like a Hamels that they will have for several years going forward.
  19. When you have already won the first 2 games of series in the other teams house and including blowing them out on Canada Day, you don't need to use tricks to try to win. It's not like we have Cy Young out there on the mound.
  20. I would definitely make the next batter wear one after that sequence. Those bunts after pounding the Jays on Canada Day were just BS. ETA: I see you were posting the same thing before I did.
  21. You could also point to Friday when the Jays got off to a 3-0 lead against has-been Fister but failed to add on and ended up losing in extra innings after Estrada (also looking like a has-been lately) had another rough outing.
  22. So do we have a chance to set the record for shortest game day thread ever on this forum? I believe Sanchez is starting for Buffalo today. Let's hope for a good outing and successful return to the Jays next week.
  23. And he needs to show he can stay off the DL. Biggio is a guy to keep an eye on but wouldn't expect he could jump to MLB next season.
  24. That's not what you said above. You asked how many teams have 2 starters at a position. And good utility guys are not necessarily expensive but yes they are not easy to find. They are also well worth whatever you need to spend to get a good one. Harrison is currently on a 4 yr/$27 M contract through 2018 with 2 team options in '19 and '20. Word is he could be available. Jays should look into it. ETA: oh I missed the last part of your earlier post. Well whatever -IF you are going to have these injury prone guys like Tulo and especially Travis - you need better depth of one kind or another
