  1. I do think the criticism of the Desmond deal is a bit short sighted too. He even admits in the article that the deal is quite a good one if Desmond was an outfielder. Well there is zero chance Desmond plays 1B for the full length of the contract and it's quite possible that the Rockies end up making a move as soon as later this season to open up space for him in either the outfield or middle infield.
  2. Shi is using that quote completely out of context: Bluejays.com "Atkins said that the Blue Jays will have their best and most versatile team with Pearce in left field and Justin Smoak at first base for the majority of the season. That would give us the most versatility, Atkins said. "So [we're] projecting for Steve to play a good amount of outfield and Justin to play a good amount of first base. That would be the best-case scenario. Atkins, however, said that Smoak would have to show improvements at the plate to be an effective everyday first baseman." So if Smoak plays well at 1B, they'd want Pearce to still play the majority of games, meaning he'd be in left field over Carrera/Upton. Obviously very few people would disagree with this, but he isn't saying Smoak will play 1B even if he continued to be rubbish.
  3. Maybe. Either that or he's an angry old man who can't let go of the past.
  4. The thing that annoys me most is where he claims that managers shouting and swearing at umpires is "character of the game" and therefore good. But Bautista celebrating the biggest moment of his career is a bad thing. What an ignorant fool.
  5. Even if there were 3 capable starters willing to join to sit in AAA for a few months, if we were 15 games out by the trade deadline then the season would have gone disastrously wrong. That likely means that most of the players you've mentioned have been injured, or so out of form that they have little trade value.
  6. I thought exactly the same thing when the Orioles signed Juan Francisco on Tuesday!
  7. Kevin Jepsen to Diamondbacks: Low risk / high reward, minor league deal but if he makes the roster and bounces back might be able to trade him at the deadline for an interesting piece.
  8. Throw in another option - Biagini to AAA to transition to a starter. Again not a slam dunk as you'd lose him from the bullpen and most of the remaining bullpen won't have options left. Lots of different ways it could go though, spring training should have some really interesting battles for roster spots!
  9. Yeah I'm not advocating for it, I just think none of us knows. We've got starting depth, it just isn't very reliable. Same as we have 2 LF who are not very good either. If we were to make a trade, our biggest strength is the starting 5. Whether it's better to keep that as the strength rather than using it to improve weaknesses elsewhere is debatable. If it is a major league deal (as has been reported), then if they carry both Latos and Bolsinger as relievers, there is no room in the bullpen for a second lefty or anyone who potentially impresses in spring training like Barnes, Sparkman or Floyd. Otherwise it means either exposing Bolsinger to waivers, or trading a starter (unless one of the other relievers gets injured / traded). Fingers crossed it's a minor league deal then a decision doesn't have to be made for a while. Which then gives time for the inevitable injury or loss of form of one or more of the pitching staff to occur, and Latos can then step up to replace whoever that happens to.
  10. I agree with your second point, but not your first. Pompey is close to being a bust with the Jays and Pagan is overrated by this board IMO. FWIW I'd be very reluctant to give up a starter, especially Stroman, and think we shouldn't make any major changes at this point.
  11. If it's a major league deal I wonder if they are aiming to trade Happ. Estrada or even Stroman to improve LF. What's worse - Latos as the 5th starter, or Carerra and Upton each playing 100 games?
  12. At least we got Pearce for $6.25m x2 years, who will hopefully be the full time 1B by the end of the first month of the season.
  13. Adam Lind to the Nationals pending a physical.
  14. Unless we're talking about a minor league deal of course - in which case go for it, minor league deals have no drawbacks in my eyes.
  15. He was in 2015 and one of the main reasons he wasn't in 2016 was Chris Davis playing 1B every day. More importantly, Pedro Alvarez would be a nominal upgrade over Smoak. Either we'd have to get rid of Smoak, making Pedro cost Smoak's $4m plus whatever salary he'd accept, or move Pearce to the outfield (where he isn't as good) and then have a terrible 1B tandem of Smoak and Pedro. Not worth it IMO.
  16. It does show he's made an effort though, compared to last offseason where he looked like he was eating himself out of the league. Obviously being fit and healthy should also allow him to be more mobile.
  17. Reds are paying all except $1million of his salary.
  18. The Red Sox traded both Travis Shaw and Moncada, so 3B is Panda's job to lose. He looks like a different person with the weight he's lost.
  19. If he's been ill for awhile then it possibly explains the lack of moves by the Tigers this offseason. They were never going to be sellers while he was still alive, but expect a fire sale to take place now.
  20. Hi Shi, Will you miss Barry Davis? Yours truly, Everyone. SNShiDavidi • 41m I worked with Barry for a long time and he helped me when I was transitioning from print only to the multi-platform work I do now, so I am grateful to him for that. So that's a no then.
  21. Yeah you're probably right. Plus when playing every day there is limited time for hype for the next game, discussion of a great game or play you've seen etc. Because of this, individual games become less important in baseball than overall statistics. And for a lot of people, statistics are boring.
  22. While interesting, this poll only shows favourite sports. Very few sports fans only follow one sport. FWIW the radio guy promoting horse racing was a horse racing journalist!
  23. Also depends on what is meant by popular. If it includes participation then golf would likely have a chance at top 5. I heard on the radio the other day someone claim horse racing was the most popular sport in the world as he said it has the highest number of attendees (because you have multiple daily race meets). Off topic but I don't consider it a real sport, if gambling didn't exist, neither would horse racing in the form it does now.
  24. Yeah NBA has a bigger media presence (both traditional and social) but I guess that may be in part because of the fan base - basketball is especially popular with under 30's. MLB makes more money, but with twice the games and all the related extra merchandise and food and drink sales you'd expect that to be the case. It's a similar situation in Britain, football dominates like NFL does in the US, and the second most popular sport is debatable. Cricket is the baseball equivalent which isn't as popular with the young, but has lots of traditionalist fans.
