  1. Lowry needs to excel in the playoffs to be universally recognised as the best guard in the East. Kyrie is more flashy so has more fans. In a sport like basketball I can fully understand that. Kind of similar to why Leonard will never be as popular as someone like Durant, and the Spurs in general haven't got as many fans with them as their second team as other teams.
  2. Orioles agree to three-year, $37.5 million deal with slugger Mark Trumbo
  3. Irving is rated highly because of his insane handle, you can't deny that he is a very good player on offense, he sucks on defense but that isn't as flashy. Curry also got more fan votes than anyone except James, so can't really see how you can say most would take Irving over Curry.
  4. Media votes Fan votes
  5. James got 198 out of 324 player votes and was the top vote receiver of any player, 28 more than Durant got: player votes
  6. Goins will probably be claimed by a team that needs a cheap squad player to cover multiple positions and can be used as a late game defensive sub. We don't need that, because we have Barney. Ideally Goins passes through waivers and can be called up when Tulo gets injured. But if he doesn't, then shrug - if he isn't good enough to make the 25 man then it's not a big loss.
  7. All star votes only being 50% by fans now seems to have made it a bit fairer. If it was 100% fans both Wade and Zaza would have made it: East starters: Irving DeRozen Butler James Antetokounmpo West starters: Curry Harden Leonard Durant Davis Lowry, Thomas, Westbrook probably the biggest snubs.
  8. Can he make it while still a teenager? Maybe not, but it'd be fun to see.
  9. Especially as Gibbons won't want to use him.
  10. Melvin? Haha. Yeah Vlad hopefully arrives next year.
  11. I tend to agree but you never know. He'd have to be very good to justify being anything other than a September call up. He'll have plenty of opportunities to make the roster from 2018 onwards.
  12. If (and it's a big if) Gurriel excels in AAA as a shortstop, we could see him given some OF games at AAA and then called up as an OF this year where he could remain until Tulo either breaks down or is traded. Similar to what the Nats did with Trea Turner.
  13. Exactly - there isn't much available now, but every year there are players released or made available for minimal cost that may catch lighting in a bottle on a switch of teams, and will cost less than the remaining free agents or currently available trade targets. Plus leaving flexibility in the budget means we can do a Liriano type deal with taking on short term salary if we're in contention for the playoffs.
  14. I think he's not a fan of overpaying for what's left in free agency, or giving up too much in a trade, and I'm fine with that. If Carrera and Upton are as poor as they could be, pick up someone on waivers mid season or give Pompey a shot.
  15. We had him at AAA for about a month last season before granting him a release. I assume he'll get a spring training invite from another team though.
  16. Well a decent backup means that Martin can be rested more without seriously weakening the team. And I doubt AJ provides that. The problem is why would a decent catcher want to be a backup, and (as you say) even if we found one, it wouldn't be as cheap as going with a minimum salary guy.
  17. We could do with a couple more minor league Floyd type deals to rotate in mid season when someone like Loup or Dermody has a bad month. Plenty of time for that to happen though.
  18. I'd like Feliz but apparently he's going to the Brewers for 1/6.
  19. There's also Mike Ohlman who could end up "winning" the role if we don't sign anyone and AJ has a poor spring training.
  20. Not if Gibbons has anything to say about it. It really would be ideal though if Pompey could surprise everyone and win a place on the roster at spring training.
  21. Because we have 4 OFs plus Pearce and Barney, and no MLB proven backup catcher. It's not that much of a stretch.
  22. Haha, yeah I'm 100% with you there.
  23. Sure I agree that he could fail. If that happens we'd have to do something, maybe give Pompey a shot. But unless or until it does I don't want to spend more of the limited budget that's left over after Bautista signs, on someone like a 35 year old Pagan who's 1 year away from a -0.7 WAR season.
  24. That seems more likely, there's no way Smoak would get the same contract in free agency so we'd likely have to eat salary or package a prospect to get rid of him in a trade.
  25. Fair enough if your point is more general, but at no point have I tried to make out Carrera is anything more than what he is - a very cheap, squad filler player who'll provide 0.5 to 1 WAR. I don't believe upgrading on him right now from the options available is the most efficient use of the remaining budget.
