  1. Kyrie Irving requests to be traded I can't tell what shocks me more: that Kyrie doesn't want to play with one of the best ever players any more, or that of the 4 teams he is willing to play for, one of them is the Knicks.
  2. Yankees are a good fit for him or Pearce.
  3. Yeah and even if you're only looking at traditional stats Smoak has the highest (qualified) batting average on the team. Martin's OBP is only 0.05 less than Smoak. Whatever measure you want to use, Martin has fully justified his contract and more.
  4. Retool priorities: We have 3 1B/DH players. Pearce can play LF but he's not very good there. Ideally, Morales would be traded, but that might be difficult. So I think trading one of Pearce or Smoak would be dealing from a position of relative strength. I think Happ should be traded if there's a decent offer out there. He's only got one more season on his contract and his age = higher risk of decline next year. In the offseason JD either signs a team friendly deal (i.e. much less than $30m for 5+ seasons) or is traded for multiple assets, including at least one player who can play straight away. Use August/September this year to see if players like Alford, Smith Jr, Pompey (possibly Gurriel and some of the pitchers) should be on the 25 man next year. Plus see if Travis comes back this season. Trade Estrada and Liriano and move Biagini back to starting again as an audition for next year.
  5. Leone has an option so could well be sent down for the inevitable reliever reinforcement(s) that will be called up later today. Beliveau might be DFA too.
  6. Good job they have Marwin Gonzalez in the form of his life and a 15.5 game division lead.
  7. Yeah that's fair. Despite the rumours, I'd be surprised if the front office turns down a decent offer for someone like Happ or Pearce. I don't think they'd trade either for whatever they can get though. For many reasons (the fanbase's impact on Rogers being one of them) I'd also be surprised if they went full rebuild in the summer. I've no doubt they're looking at deals where they take on salary for controllable players, and/or trading someone like Pompey in a Hutchison type deal too.
  8. I hope you're not suggesting that you're only a "hardcore" Jays fan if you support a full scale rebuild (FWIW I don't think you are)! Most people can see the playoffs are unlikely this year, but having a more optimistic view for 2018 doesn't make you a casual. I think we should we trading shorter term contracts like Happ and one of Smoak and Pearce, I also think if we did that that attendances wouldn't suffer much in the short term. It'd be different if we traded players like Stroman, Sanchez, and maybe even Donaldson. What happens with JD in the summer is a very big decision, but the only way I see it really annoying the less knowledgeable fans would be if he's traded for non elite prospects that are years away.
  9. Drew Rasmussen denied free agency by Major League Baseball According to the above article "there were "discrepancies" between Rasmussen's predraft MRI exam and the MRI conducted as his postdraft physical by the Rays" plus he's already had one Tommy John surgery. As Slade says the Rays will get a comp pick in next year's draft instead.
  10. FWIW I thought the FO were wrong to give Smoak his extension too, but they saw something in him. If they saw something in Morales I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt.
  11. He replaced a fan favourite in EE, he's already 34, he's currently below replacement level, he has a 3 year contract when he'd have likely accepted a 1-2 year contract, and he prevents Pearce or Bautista being DH every day.
  12. Carrera is fifth in WAR for positional players for us, he's not the problem as a 4th outfielder. Alford is also injured, though he's got a chance to start when he's back, and next season.
  13. At least we can take advantage of an eight man bullpen and then call up reinforcements tomorrow.
  14. Barney has quietly been one of the most disappointing players this year. He's never been good enough to start every game, but as a good defensive reserve with positional flexibility, all he has to do is be OK with the bat.
  15. "Let's go ___" the worst chant ever. Annoys me almost as much as a Mexican wave.
  16. We should be paying as much as possible to maximise the return, but realistically it's still not going to help much. Depends what you mean by decent. We're not getting a top 100 prospect for a rental reliever coming back from injury.
  17. Yeah, his loss of form has cost us in more ways than one. He was great until June, then fell off a cliff. Injury / his back playing up?
  18. You guys weren't kidding yesterday about the outfield turf being a mess.
  19. Haha, very bizarre. Who says baseball is boring?
  20. Joey Votto is giving Zack Cozart a donkey, and the Reds are asking fans to name it WTF?
  21. You can make an argument that we won't be any better (I'd disagree, but you can still argue it). But we're virtually guaranteed to get younger. Grilli has already gone, Bautista is unlikely to be back. Estrada and Liriano probably won't be. It's quite possible one or more of Happ, Smoak and Pearce will be traded. All of those players are in their 30's with Smoak by far the youngest. There's at least one outfield job up for grabs with Smith Jr and Alford first in line to win it. A few other prospects are likely to get calls up next year (led by Gurriel IMO).
  22. Surely that would only be relevant if he signed a cut price deal to play on, not if he doesn't play at all?
  23. Can you imagine the carnage of drunk/high late night Spanky with mod powers?
