  1. Why isn't conceding a game a thing in baseball? Is it really better to waste relievers and potentially get position players hurt in a blowout than just to offer up a handshake and say see you tomorrow? Is there any additional punishment that baseball would give out for something like that? You may be potentially hurting your ability to win future games by selling out to a game that there's nothing left to play for.
  2. I agree with Buck, from the beginning I hate the way that rule is being applied. I think there should be some allowance for a natural motion on the pop-up so long as there is no effort made to advance to the next base. Sort of how you're allowed to run past first base and as long as you don't make any motion towards second you just go back and step on the bag.
  3. Seattle is kind of the opposite, they have a few tough teams coming up but then down the stretch it's a joke of a schedule because it's a bunch of AL West teams not named Houston. I think they're guaranteed a wild card spot. Tampa will get one because it's Tampa. Probably comes down to us and the Orioles. I can't f***ing believe that's a thing but we are the better team.
  4. Social media, fans chatting at the ballpark, media perception. He's more low-key than Manoah, which I think contributes, and of course the ever important win/loss record🙄
  5. A great base stealer can absolutely steal you games in October when runs are truly at a premium. Ideally, they wouldn't be black holes offensively because it's tough to justify a roster spot for strictly a base runner, but on the other hand they can also be the difference between winning and losing playoff games and beggars can't be choosers. This is a team that doesn't have the greatest approach against pitchers that execute well. They don't grind out runs very well at all. So for us, it might be especially important. On a side note, the disrespect that Gausman is getting is becoming rather annoying. Both within the fanbase and clearly the idiots working the game yesterday and I think in general, people really don't understand just how good this dude has been. He's literally one of the best pitchers in the game. He's a true ace and most certainly the ace of this team. It's not even particularly close between him and Manoah, and I love Manoah, but come on.
  6. It's an upgrade. Not much of one, but a poor offensive player is still better than a complete black hole. Maybe lose a bit defensively, but not much. Given the choice, I'd have made the same one.
  7. Is there nobody anywhere? AA? A? Independent baseball? Anybody but this guy. I might even take a Thornton start.
  8. I see it the same way as a throw to second base on an attempted steal. That throw always goes left to right and the player covering second can always jump into the base path to collect the ball and just drop to their knees and get an out almost every time, but you can't do that. So they catch the ball out in front of the bag and then they tag behind them. If they had done this here, Merrifield would have been out.
  9. It's one of those cases of mono that moves to the shoulder and then the lat. Eventually it'll probably move to the groin and/or hip. Probably have to wait until next year to know for sure.
  10. So Schneider doesn't suddenly make our s*** bullpen better?
  11. If it's runner on second and one out, I'm okay with it, not on first. Didn't like the move regardless of Zimmer's dumb ass.
  12. Does anybody know if Berrios was dating Miss USA and had a messy break up? I'm otherwise befuddled as to what's happened to him.
  13. That's why I say mediocre, mediocre is average between garbage and pretty good, but most nights if you look at where he's trying to throw it and where it ends up going it really hasn't been very good. At least by the standard of a closer on a supposed contender.
  14. For anyone who's been paying attention Romano's command has been mediocre all year even when he gets away with it. I told my buddy it's going to be a high-wire act in the 9th, and here it is.
  15. If you expect nothing, you can't be disappointed.
  16. Holy s***, is it that bad? I admit I'm not in the know when it comes to various forms of Leukemia but I thought the survival rate was pretty good.
  17. You're conflating my point. I never said it's expecting too much to expect an accurate strike zone, I suggested that it's difficult to make completely accurate calls on the margins and sometimes people expect too much from humans to call those 100% accurate. These are the best trained people in the world at this job and they still screw up. Some are worse than others, but none are perfect. At some point it's beyond human ability. I am for a computerized K-zone by the way.
  18. The first one didn't miss by much, especially slinging in from a lefty, that's a tough margin call. I think sometimes people expect too much. The second one...yeah that was crap.
  19. We've been skating on thin ice with these wins. One of them was bound to get away from us, and frankly, this was likely the one; it always felt fleeting. The frustrating part was all the resources used to try and secure this win going into a series with the Red Sox. Need Berrios to be solid and I think he will give us 5-6 innings and then we have our true ace in game 2, so I feel alright.
  20. Katoh already better than Cavan. I'm only half kidding.
  21. Nice having a 3B that just does the s*** he's supposed to do the way it's supposed to be done.
  22. Angle is important. This is a bit from behind, Jays I think is a bit from the front. I'd say it was even. 50/50 call.
  23. A little over the top to say it wasn't close. Looking at a frozen frame, at best it was even with the front of the plate. Close enough to go either way, but can't complain about that call.
