I think we should get used to Martin not hitting. New league, new team and a track record that suggests he's more of a .230/.320/.400 hitter. I fully expect him to be borderline awful at the plate this year and think we'll see improvements next year... Thank god Gibby pulled the plug on him hitting 2nd quickly....I never understood how they thought that was a good fit. Now if only Gibby was smart enough to get Pompey out of the 2 hole.
Surely they tested it...
Is it going to cost them 20 or 30 points on their batting averages (a number which I think is insanely high) compared to what it would have on the old turf - or compared to what it would on natural grass. The goal has to be to try and replicate the speed of natural grass...
And for all the hitters complaining, there will be the same # of pitcher applauding...
could have/should have been singles on the "old turf" or on a standard grass infield? Isn't the intent to make it play more like grass (ie, much slower than the old turf)?
There are other ways to implement a "win now mode" without sacrificing your ability to sustain success....
As a fan - I looking for sustained success, not a one year wonder. I realise it's difficult to keep looking long term and that sustaining success is challenging in the majors, but let's be honest - teams do it (St. Louis, SF, Boston, Angels, A's, TB - all have over the past 7-8 years)...and I could be wrong, but I don't think they achieve this by making short sighted decisions to sacrifice the development of their top young players to try and win in a particular year. Just my thoughts.
Exactly....and whether pitching out of the pen delays their development as a starting pitcher which is significantly more valuable to the team than relief pitchers are.....oh and there's the possibility relieving for a couple of years before trying to transition back to a starter may significantly increase their chance of injury.
and...well...never mind.
Mmm. You present an interesting dilemma. They each seemingly have a legitimate claim to the ball, and yet the ball can have only one rightful owner. Quite the conundrum. As a federal employee, I believe the law is all we have. It's all that separates us from the savages who don't deserve even the privilege of the daily mail. Stuffing parcels into mailboxes where they don't belong!!...But I have made a decision. We will cut the ball down the middle, and give half to Castro and half to Norris.
Holy Christ - you put $32K down on FanDuels last year? all to make $1,500? I get that bond's don't give you much return on your dollar and the stock market is risky, but that's a f*ton of effort to make a measly $1,500
What mess? Navarro is the backup catcher.
Are we expecting AA to re-create the scene from Moneyball here he trades Pena for anything he can get b/c the manager is too dumn to use his players correctly?
Who's rule of thumb is this? And when will we ever see a ML Manager break "tradition" and actually do this?
I've always been a huge proponent of getting your best hitters more at bats (seems simple enough) - yet ML managers still don't even try and do that... I never understood sticking some light hitting guys who handles the bat well 2nd (P.Polanco).
Doubront's xFIP in 2013/2014 was about the same as Dickey and Buehrle the past couple of years. He's pitched in the AL East, but has lost some velo the past couple of years.
Decent depth guy.
