  1. I don't really vote, but I will say that Dick is my favourite poster this past year.
  2. I've heard Rick Fox and his daughters were on-board? nothing super official...prolly best to wait for more details
  3. Sad day indeed.
  4. Agreed. Fire Buck and start the trend!
  5. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/how-much-did-the-red-sox-benefit-from-their-sign-stealing-scheme/ There's an article summarizing the sign stealing system that the Red Sox "apparently" used in 2018. Sounds like they used the video room to identify the catchers signals in game and then with runners on 2nd, the runners would us that information to signal the hitters. Based on the stats, this seemed to give them an advantage. Just to be clear - if a team evaluates video tape prior to the game to figure out what signals the catcher is using - and they use those in the game to steal signs from 2nd...that's OK. But, if they look at video during the game to either confirm they are indeed using the signals they saw on video prior to the game - or to figure out a new sequence of signals and the runners on 2nd relays that to the hitter...that's not OK. Isn't the obvious fix for all of this for catchers to mix up their signs a lot more frequently?
  6. Something just randomly made me look up Troy Glaus on Fangraphs and I never realized how good he was in 2000 (8.2 WAR) or how potent the Angels offense was in 2000....when they had Erstad (8.7), Glaus (8.2), Salmon (4.5), Garret Anderson (2.2), Bengie Molina (2.2) and Mo Vaughn (1.9 WAR - but with 36 hr and 117 rbis). Team finished 82-80, 3rd place in the AL West behind one of the most horrid pitching staffs I've ever seen. Fun fact - Bengie Molina actually posted a positive BsR in 2000!
  7. Pretty awesome to see Groshans rise so much - even though he missed most of last season. Future stud.
  8. Agreed - although, isn't Walker also a sabermetric case? That fact he was a 5 tool player, stole some bases and won GG's helps, but he didn't reach milestones. The sabermetrics help confirm just how valuable his base running and defense made him and helped disprove the s*** about how Walker was a product of Coors Field. Votto might end up like Manny without the PED links? Or in the Edgar Martinez category? He could finish with a career wRC+ over 145 and simply be viewed as one of the best hitters of all-time...counting stats be damned. I'm certainly rooting for Votto over the next few years.
  9. I'd agree with this. Walker is a good case for keeping the 10 year system. A lot has changed over the last 10 years in terms of our knowledge of baseball statistics and even the older crowd is at least starting to acknowledge they exist and are relevant, which changed a lot of views on a player like Walker. Also, a lot of the stubborn boomers who didn't got too old and stopped voting - paving the way for new perspectives and views to be heard. The Veterans Committee should have been shut down the second they elected Harold Baines into the HOF.
  10. Ah - good point. That makes only getting Ozuna for 1 year more reasonable.
  11. Like Manny? His career was fairly comparable to Frank Thomas, yet he gets no respect.
  12. Safe to assume most here wouldn't really want to give up a compensation pick to get 1 year of Ozuna? Makes a bit more sense for the Braves who are contending. What's that contract really cost the Braves with the pick included? 1 year $23M?
  13. I feel sorry for the interns who got assigned to this.
  14. So excited. I was never a huge Walker fan or anything, but listening to them play the video of him getting the call and the talk about how important this is for Canadian baseball and the players like Francis and Morneau talking about how Walker meant to them made me a little emotional (how can you not be romance about baseball). The man signed his first contract with the Expos for $1,500 - and ends up in the HOF. That's incredible.
  15. Braves give up a comp pick for just 1 year of Ozuna? I wonder if they wanted him for say 3 years $45M and he decided he'd rather a 1 year deal to hit the mark next year with compensation attached to him.
  16. “Rowdy’s going to have a chance,” Montoyo said. “I’m a fan of Rowdy and you guys know that. And he’s still a young kid. Some guys take a little bit longer, sometimes they do it faster. That’s above-average power that he’s got and you don’t find that everywhere, so Rowdy’s going to get a chance to make the club also, for sure.” I mean we should expect Charlie to say this - but to suggest above average power is hard to find is pretty laughable in today's game. Everybody hits bombs now Charlie.
  17. It would be boner inducing to see this type of tweet about Vladdy.
  18. Why does Andruw Jones get the shaft from voters? Statistically, he's the best defensive CF of all-time by a significant margin (much the way Ozzie is the best defensive SS of all-time) and posted 67 WAR. How on earth does Omar Vizquel, the 9th best defensive SS of all-time who posted 42.5 WAR get more votes than Jones? Do we think this is based on assumptions that Jones was on PEDs?
  19. That's pretty cool. Definitely skills/stats I've never really looked at in much depth before. Just to confirm, the SprSpd is their peak speed?
  20. Biggio is faster than Mookie Betts? Learn something new everyday!
  21. We've had discussions about that on here and lots claim they want their announcers to tell mildly entertaining stories, tell you what they 'think' players are actually talking about on the bench, how country strong a player is and how nice the weather is. They don't want them cluttering the broadcast with a more modern take on how the game is played and the stats to support it. I'm with Bauer on this.
  22. RAPTOR - thanks.
  23. Thanks Spanky. I mean it better start showing up this year or I'd have to think his prospect is going to start dropping significantly.
  24. What's the new stat they have in the NBA that would be their version of 'WAR'? It was discussed a while back here, but I forget (also where do I find it if you know). I think it was a 5 letter acronym?
