  1. And my point is that we lack depth. Going the depth route typically has less risk (as you avoid the long term, high $ commitments, which almost never work out), cost less and protect the team better against injuries (which should be expected). Oh - and ever once in awhile, you find yourself a top of the rotation arm. 1. Berrios 2. Manoah 3. Ryu 4. FA / trade 5. FA / trade 6. Pearson 7. Stripling 8. Hatch 9. ??? 10. ??? Signing a top arm would be great, but that may push Pearson/Stripling back into the rotation and if we have injuries, the cupboard gets pretty bare in a hurry. Also, keep in mind that Ray, Rodon and Gausman were all 'depth' signings with upside who became studs.
  2. fWAR also says Wade Miley and Ranger Suarez were more valuable than Gerrit Cole, Corbin Burnes and Lance Lynn. There are weird outliners in bWAR and fWAR. I think when I did the math, another 32 starts made by Berrios (20) and Manoah (12) provided another 4.5 fWAR. If I use the bWAR, they would provide another 4 WAR. I'm not sure I'm willing to expect much more than 4 bWAR from Ray next year....maybe you could bank on 5 bWAR, which means it's still 'close' to replacing Ray's value.
  3. I tend to agree - but who the F is going to pay Seager $15M coming off his age 33 season when his wRC+ was only 99 (counting stats be damned). He's clearly in decline and there's probably a strong chance he's a 1.5 WAR player who's below average with the bat next year. If you're getting him on a 1 year, $5M deal, then sure, that minor upgrade may be worth it.
  4. I may be mis-remembering, but I didn't think the qualifying offer (1 year $18M or get a 2nd round comp pick) was an option in 2018. Am I wrong (again)? If so, it does seem odd we didn't go that route.
  5. And of course he's the home plate umpire for the NYY/BOS wild card game tonight.
  6. Derrick Rose cut his arm, needing 10 stitches while trying to cut an apple - so it does happen in other sports.
  7. Full seasons from Manoah + Berrios (even when assuming no improvement) will more than replace the 3.9 fWAR Ray provided. What we're trying to do is replace the 32-34 starts made before those 2 arrived. IMO, it's more likely we can replace those starts in house (Pearson/Hatch/Stripling, etc.) or with a FA than it is that Biggio can replace Semien. Especially when you consider Stripling himself made 19 of those 32-34 starts and is still on the team. That said, we also need to replace Matz's starts (perhaps by re-signing him) and we really need to add starting pitching depth, which looks like a weak point right now. I could see us going with Matz and Jon Gray instead of Ray. Quantity over quality. We need some depth and while neither Manoah or Berrios are likely to be true 'aces', they are both top of the rotation guys. Some setup where Stripling and Pearson can be SP'ing depth would be ideal.
  8. JD Martinez is OUT tonight after spraining his ankle tripping over 2nd base while running out to RF at the start of the inning. What an idiot.
  9. It's crazy that the Dodgers would have to face SF in the 1st round of the payoffs (if they beat the Cards)...
  10. Semien > Ray for me. Without Martin in our system, I think we're now hoping Groshans or Orelvis will ultimately take over 3rd base long term. If Biggio may end up in the Zobrist role so I think there's room for Semien to lock in as our 2nd basemen for the next 5 years. I think Ray comes with a lot more risk and will be easier to replace (essentially because I'm not sold he's going to repeat his success). That said - Ray may give us a bit of a discount as we helped turn his career around. It will be fascinating to see this play out.
  11. Conforto has to be one of the best pillow contract options on the market. He'd be an incredible addition to this team.
  12. I see you listing this on multiple posts. Do you consider them a platoon? or we'd have one or the other? I just can't imagine we'll go into next season with both Biggio and Espinal as bench players unless we really increase payroll or ignore pitching altogether. I think you'll see one of those 2 as a bench piece, along with Grichuk - which still would be the makings of a great bench (especially when you consider how strong our backup catcher is likely to be).
  13. Isn't this because they play 2 games in Houston before needing a day to travel to Chicago? They need to play B2B days, travel, B2B, travel, Game 5 or it takes too long. You have to stagger the series or you have days with no baseball and they don't want teams playing at the same time. Not everyone works 9-5. People working the night shift probably LOVE having an afternoon game to watch (instead of missing every night game). People live stream games, people record games and watch them later. Pretty sure MLB have smart people who do this for a living and know what's going on.
  14. He's also a complete professional player who works his ass off.
  15. I mean Harper (35) and Soto (29) aren't far ahead of Turner in terms of HRs.
  16. Why doesn't his name come up as a leading candidate for NL MVP? Simply because he played for 2 teams? Is Trea Turner the best SS in baseball now?
  17. No, no, no - you live and die with your Cy Young contender. Charlie can sleep well knowing he lost with his ace on the mound. All the guys who castrated Cash last year best be on here supporting Chuckles. Chuckles is the man right because he used his eyes and didn't look at all the math and statistical evidence that more often than not, Ray is going to get tattooed going through the heart of the red hot Yanks lineup a 3rd time.
  18. Thru the Order AVG | OPS 1st Time .188 | .609 2nd Time .179 | .550 3rd Time .302 | .936
  19. Choosing not to throw at KK has nothing to do with being PC. History has proven it doesn't actually police the game and common sense suggests it's a massive pussy move. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.
  20. No discussion on the Ryder Cup here? Man it was incredible to watch. I love it.
  21. It took MLB 30 years after Chapman's death to finally implement the use of batting helmets.
  22. Yes I think I read they made an exemption for pro sports athletes.
  23. Holy assumptions. Borucki's been awful this year. -0.3 WAR, strikeouts down, way too man walks. This move is completely justified without considering the suspension. Does Barnes suck? Yes - if you want a second lefty in the pen, I'd suggest Saucedo or Snead are ahead of Borucki. You've seemingly generated a negative opinion about the FO based off of some bizarre correlation that Borucki was sent down as a punishment for hitting KK - one that is based off absolutely no evidence. That my friend is what's wrong with society.
  24. Man - I f***ing love this team. Springer is the f***ing man Semien is so professional Vlad is the prodigy Bo is just the f***ing man. The flair. He does it all Teo has that great smile and just keeps getting better Gurriel, Kirk, Manoah, Romano, Berrios, Ray...f***ing awesome. Let's do this boys.
