  1. The system screws players over way more than anything. For every Vlad that gets paid more, theres 3 or 4 players who get underpaid a lot so teams/owners aren't going to want to change the system. Baseball players get screwed more than any other sport for getting paid based on what they are worth. NHL entry level deals are 3 years and then you're getting paid market value, NBA players its 4 years or less. MLB its 6/7 years and you don't even make the majors right away. Not to mention pitchers can be great for 1/2 years early on, get hurt and really never get paid for the value they provided.
  2. The key for the Jays is really going to be if they can develop their prospects and have a few turn into low cost regulars so they can supplement them with a couple star FA otherwise they might be forced into a rebuild/retool for a year or 2. There's an argument that next season should be turned into a retool as rookies/young players developing/having growing pains at the MLB level and trying to win games can be tough simultaneously. It also would reset the luxury tax which would give you more flexibility for the next competitive window. Not sure Rogers is going to continue running 240M payrolls for an 85 win team.
  3. Reminds me of Pillar who just got such good reads/jumps on balls and played a great defensive CF without being relatively fast for the position. Varsho is even better. Meanwhile you Rajai Davis was crazy fast and was just awful in CF when he was a Jay.
  4. The Pitching hasn't even been that good this year so far. From who is currently on the roster/healthy I would expect them to be pretty good the rest of the season but the defense has covered up a lot. There's been a ton of hard contact this year...4th worst FIP going into the game tonight and 2nd most HR against. A few of the scrubs like White, Espino and Parsons have those numbers inflated so I wouldn't actually say they have been nearly as close to the bottom as the overall numbers suggest but we should stop pretending its been great so far.
  5. I see Chris Collabello is back with the Jays in LF.
  6. Something wrong with the balls that should have been like 440 feet lol. 109 exit velo and 31 degree launch lol
  7. Is Biggio really that much of a nightmare lol? He's fine as a bench player/depth piece given he's a LHB with a lot of Righties on the team and can play 2B, 3B, RF, LF and 1B.
  8. Morales was slow as s***. It would be different if Vladdy had tons of data showing he underperformed his expected numbers but to start his career in roughly 2150 PA he was pretty much spot on with the expected numbers. And its been his last 785 PA where he's underperformed them so I feel like there is recency bias at play. The new dimensions at Rogers Centre could be a factor with the higher wall in LF, I think it was last year where he was terrible at home and great on the road but could be a lot of noise in that. I wouldn't be surprised if the new RC turf is turning some ground balls into outs that normally would be hits. It looks pretty slow this year similar to 2015 when a new turf was installed.
  9. I can't believe some are talking about non-tendering him. People are saying well because he underperformed his xwOBA last year and is again doing so through 25 games that he's some outlier and want to say it will continue etc.. Well in 4 years from 2019-2022 his expected wOBA was within his xwOBA every year within .004. In 2022 he had a 133 wRC+ with a .351 wOBA and put up 3.4 WAR. I think that's a reasonable expectation this year and would be just fine for what this team needs.
  10. Yeah the broadcast/writers around the team will say "The pitching has been excellent" when really the defense has masked a bunch of it. Also think the pitching has got away with a lot of flyballs that might be homers come later in the summer so hopefully there is some improvement on that end. Its going to be really interesting with how Rogers Centre plays because not sure if its the humidor or what but the ball hasn't been carrying at all so far this year, and even last year it played more as a pitcher's park. Maybe the FO was on to something lol.
  11. Looking at statcast numbers and Schneider up to a .361 xwOBA. He really should be playing at least 5x a week at this point. I think he's one of the 4 best hitters in the lineup right now. Also looking at the pitching numbers so far and its not that pretty from a hard contact perspective. Jays pitchers have given up a ton of barrels/hard hits. Feels like the defense has masked a lot of the pitching mistakes so far. Luckily some of the scrubs like Parsons and White are off the roster and Gauseman looks to be getting healthier so have to think there is some positive regression there.
  12. Outside of a strong arm, Vlad is terrible at everything else that constitutes being a 3B. His range is terrible at 1st, seems to have trouble picking balls in the dirt and on groundballs. He's not even a good 1st baseman and the team would probably be better off with more Turner starts at 1st and Vladdy at DH quite honestly.
  13. Man the Orioles look stacked. Projections have them as a mid 80s win team but they look well on their way to another mid to high 90 win season. That FO really turned the franchise around.
  14. He's fantastic. Reminds me of another Rangers second baseman in Kinsler. Fantastic defender with solid above average offense and a pretty good baserunner.
  15. As frustrating as Vladdy has been you don't send him down for Spencer f***ing Horowitz lol. His numbers look great in AAA but he hits the ball into the ground just as much as Vladdy and with no power either.
  16. To be fair there really isn't an ideal guy to take his place. You kind of just have to roll with Vladdy/Bo/Turner 2-4. The other guys on the roster are a lot of platoon/matchup type players. Varsho- Doesn't get on base nearly enough Jansen- Lower OBP/higher power guy not ideal for leadoff As mediocre as Springer has been I'd still rather him lead off than Cavan Biggio.
  17. Reminds me of Hanley Ramirez. Came up as a SS and by the time he was in LF in Boston he was one of the worst defensive players I've seen.
  18. Orelvis also has 5 errors in 15 games at 2nd base so I think he's got to make some improvements there before you can trust him in MLB games.
  19. Springer looks cooked at this point. Just no power at all anymore, exit velo down. To his credit he's cut down on his strikeouts but he's turned himself into a slap hitter. We knew he was going to decline but he looks like a 1.5-2 Win player now and that contract still has 2 more years. Team really needs power and they're just isn't much when you look down the lineup especially if Vladdy isn't going to be a 35HR guy.
  20. Tons of swings early in the count too which adds to the frustration. They’ve had good pitches to hit and just miss them, same story as last season.
  21. Don't think anyone is saying Varsho isn't a great defender. I'll still take the under on him being a 4.5 Win player as well as putting up 30 OAA let alone 36. Its a long season and you can't just extrapolate his defensive numbers that he's put up so far. There's luck in even getting the chances to make certain defensive plays. Kiermaier is one of the best defensive CF ever and the most OAA he ever put up was 18.
  22. Certainly not Pearson Airport lol.
  23. Its the lack of consistency with his stuff that holds him back from being a dependable arm. Him at 96-96 just isn't good enough given his lack of command. When he's 98-99 he can just throw it down the middle and at least guys can't square him up as easily.
  24. Jays booted around the ball and Padres are making great defensive plays, that's the difference in this game.
  25. Jays with some costly mistakes today. Can't make these errors and expect to win.
