  1. I'm not a fan of Cabrera either, but that's who I am predicting AA will go after. Ideally, I'd move Reyes to 2B and sign or trade for a SS (Hardy, Drew, Didi if available, etc), but that's not going to happen.
  2. I think Asdrubal Cabrera will be AA's target (can play 2B and SS, though neither of them very well). They'll stick Pompey and Gose in the OF to save money, and for some reason I don't think AA is done with Juan Francisco.
  3. This topic makes no sense. 1. Gomes wouldn't have even played in Toronto since they had Arencibia (ugh) and at the time d'Arnaud still on the roster, and 2. he wasn't directly involved in the big trades that shifted the direction of the team, yet he is being grouped with those players in your original post. In reality, he was involved in a minor deal where AA probably wanted to dump Aviles' salary, undervalued Gomes, and overvalued Rogers. So what was the point of including his WAR in the numbers, other than to fit your narrative? The Jays missed the boat on Gomes. The Pirates and Reds missed the boat on Bautista and Edwin. It doesn't mean any of those things were expected or even reasonable to expect.
  4. Once Juan Francisco meets with Luis Mercedes this winter, we will have our new first baseman. Why can't lightening strike three times?
  5. Gomes completely skew the numbers and he wasn't even a part of those big trades. It was just a bad trade unrelated to "going for it" that off-season. As far as which relievers Alex will overpay for, my money is on Oviedo.
  6. Lind gets hurt playing 1B because he is injury prone with back issues (and back issues can flare up doing anything), not because the position involves bending. There is a reason why bad defensive players move to 1B. It's easy to learn and less risky. That doesn't mean playing 1B will prevent Bautista from getting hurt but it would be a lot less demanding defensively.
  7. Count me in as preferring Aoki to Melky. Cheaper and the results will probably be similar, if not in favor of Aoki when factoring defense. I think you might be able to get Aoki on a three year deal too, which is a reasonable length, whereas Melky probably wants 4 or 5 years. As far as Bautista to 1B, I'd only move him there if the Jays got a RF improvement. I don't think he'd be too happy with moving to 1B either. I definitely like the reasoning behind it though (minimizing injury risk). Not sure Bautista will buy it. The Jays don't strike me as an organization that will lay the hammer down with players. They will cater to the players or trade them.
  8. I think they would trade Betts for Stanton in a heartbeat.
  9. Unfortunately, the best fit for Stanton might be Boston. They have the prospects to get him and the need in the OF. Hopefully he re-signs with Miami.
  10. I agree about moving Lawrie. It's doubtful he ever hits like many thought/hoped he would, but the fact that he can't stay on the field at this young of an age is a bad sign. If they could trade him while he is still young and presumably has some value/upside left, it might be for the best, depending on the return, of course.
  11. They wouldn't. But no team is going to want Papelbon at his current salary + vesting option (effectively making it a 2/26 deal). Depends entirely on whether the Phillies want to dump him for his behavior, hence why the Jays are dumping equally undesirable players on their end to make the salary swap a bit more plausible. The Jays would obviously have to add something (a prospect) since Papelbon is a productive douche rather than just a normal douche, but no one should take that salary as is.
  12. Looks like Papelbon has crotch-grabbed his way out of Philly. If Amaro agreed to take Romero and Izturis, does either team do it? I can't see any other team taking Papelbon at $13M, but he fills a need for the Jays.
  13. How much would Aoki command? Something like 3/15 or 3/18? He would be a good fit here. No power but versatile defensive OF that can get on base. Decent lead-off option moving Reyes to the 2 spot. Much safer signing than Melky.
  14. Happ for Pinto makes sense if you think Pinto's bat will play at 1B. I'm still not comfortable heading into the season expecting Sanchez to be a starter though. Signing a cheap veteran would be good if they trade Happ.
  15. Defense and bullpen. The Orioles had defense, bullpen, and some good hitters. It was a good enough blend of everything to win. Our GM doesn't seem to think value comes from anything other than offense.
  16. Happ was worth his salary based on Fangraphs this year, so I'm not sure why everyone is going crazy about keeping him. It's better to have an MLB starter as the #5 starter and let Sanchez/Norris prove they are ready rather than just sticking the latter two in the big league rotation and expecting to get good results. Keeping Happ is common sense. Sanchez and Norris will be in the 2016 rotation anyway (Happ and Buehrle are FA's and Dickey has a team option). No need to rush them. The key for this team will be what Alex does with 2B and LF. Unfortunately he will keep Reyes at SS, which sucks, but get an improvement at 2B (or 3B) and improve the OF situation. Alex going after relievers isn't a surprise. With Janssen, McGowan, and Santos leaving, and Delabar ineffective, they pretty much only have 2 dependable relievers (Cecil and Loup) if Sanchez is moving back to the rotation. They'll need to fill the bullpen up regardless.
  17. Yeah it's a near certainty that Lind and Mayberry with platoon at 1B. The issue is it makes Valencia pointless to have, since he won't be platooning with anyone, and he's not versatile enough to be useful when the team needs a 4th OF and an infielder who can at least play short (Izturis) to back up the middle infield. They have to decide who they want long-term, Valencia or JMJ. I don't think there is any need for both. Unless Valencia starts at 3B, but Gibbons seems to have given up on that illogical dream thankfully.
  18. Rios on a cheap one year deal to play LF for a year wouldn't be a bad idea if you assume he still has a 3 win season left in him and this season was just an off year. Hard to say.
  19. Figures the longest contract Rogers has given out in 10 years goes to Buck Martinez.
  20. Pompey in CF and Gose as the 4th OF would be great, IMO. If Gibby uses Gose the same way the Royals use Dyson, then he might be a serviceable player. However, I'm almost expecting Pompey to start in LF and Gose in CF. Then against lefties Pompey will shift to CF and JMJ will play LF. It's cheap. Therefore, it's realistic.
  21. Would the D-Backs take Romero's contract to dump Aaron Hill? They'd save $12M in 2016 and have way too many IF as it is. Hill's value can't be that high given the type of season he had, but who knows. They dumped Prado and McCarthy for nothing.
  22. "We have improved in wins every year since 2012...." Saving Beeston the trouble of having to spout that line some time next month.
  23. Navarro for Guerrero would be great (move Guerrero to LF since his infield defense is questionable). The Jays won't be able to replace Buehrle adequately. I'd feel more comfortable holding on to him if they plan on competing.
  24. If Alex is still GM, then I can't see him trading anyone currently in the rotation. These are all of his guys and he traded a lot of prospect capital to get this rotation (well, 3/5 of it, anyway). Unless Rogers is dumping payroll, I don't see Buehrle going. Maybe mid-season 2015 if they fall out of it in July.
  25. Anyone else think Pompey will start in LF next season? Not because he is ready but because he makes nothing. "He finished the year as LF and he hasn't done anything this spring to lose his spot." - Alex six months from now.
