  1. Wilner is such a blind homer that it's almost refreshing to read his stuff on days where your team just made an awful trade.
  2. I miss JP Ricciardi. One of those days where one GM's incompetence makes me long for the days of an average GM.
  3. If Lind stayed healthy all season I doubt he would have been as valuable. His BABIP was like .380 I think. He seemed like a prime candidate to regress badly, but got hurt before he could.
  4. Yeah, I hate this trade (mostly because it means we are expecting Hendriks to contribute at the big league level), but it's a fairly insignificant deal as far as the off-season. Of course, when Nessy becomes a good MLB catcher for the Royals, it will look worse.
  5. Wilner just tweeted that Hendriks is out of options so forget Buffalo unless they can sneak him down.
  6. Damn, it will be Chung, won't it? The Royals emphasize defense so it makes sense.
  7. I'm guessing they expect one or more of the projected AAA starters (Sanchez, Norris, Nolin, Graveman, Romero) to make the Majors out of ST and Hendriks is Buffalo depth. I never want to see that guy pitch for the Jays again so that better be the reason, and the catcher better be bad.
  8. Hopefully the catcher is Thole. Otherwise that's an overpayment, and I don't even know who the catcher is yet.
  9. I've been saying to hire Mercedes for over a year now. Or at least bring him in as an advisor or something. They've spent a ton of money and resources into the Latin market, both for MLB and minor league players. Maybe some of them working with Mercedes could help. As far as his alcoholic and hooker obsessed ways, all that means is he'll be Gregg Zaun's favorite coach.
  10. I think Smoak's salary will probably be closer to $3M than $4M, but regardless, every little bit helps. If it opens up some payroll flexibility to sign someone like Headley, then I'd probably take the trade-off. Of course, if the cost savings are used on negligible improvements at 2B and the bullpen, then I would agree that it was pointless. AA really needs to add a true impact talent if he is going to risk Smoak's bat at 1B full-time.
  11. If Smoak is going to start at 1B (still too early to speculate on that, I guess), then I would assume they would get rid of Mayberry, as Smoak's splits are not extreme enough to play him one side over the other. If he is the guy at 1B, then he is the everyday guy, most likely, for better or worse. When you figure that Lind makes $7.5M and Mayberry will probably get $2-2.5M, then the cost savings might be beneficial if it's used on other improvements. I'm not sure I trust AA to make the right improvements, but I guess we'll have to wait and see.
  12. Smoak knows how to walk so if he has one flukey BABIP season he might be useful, but he's all kinds of awful.
  13. They will no doubt decline his option and go to arbitration. He's been terrible though. Might be better off with Francisco.
  14. http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2014/10/al-east-notes-rays-lind-robertson-ichiro.html -MLBTR We all know it will be for a reliever. Which team and which reliever are the questions.
  15. We will change hitting coaches every year until someone can turn Goins into a good hitter.
  16. Lind for a reliever, Happ for a reliever, Pompey in LF, Mayberry at 1B, Izturis at 2B, and Sanchez in the rotation. I'm seriously setting the bar so low that I'm not disappointed. Not "coming to terms" with damn hitting coach is ridiculous and doesn't give me much hope for the rest of the off-season.
  17. Luis Mercedes. Bring him over.
  18. The funny thing is, Butterfield's dream job was to manage the Blue Jays, yet they went with Gibbons (who was already a proven failure), and now more coaches are either leaving or being scapegoated (Mottola, Stanley, etc). Just hire a good manager and stop going through coaches every year. This type of turnover is not a good look.
  19. Coaches who have the ability to get jobs elsewhere tend to leave this organization pretty quickly (Farrell and now Seitzer). At least we can count on Gibbons to stay forever. Lucky us.
  20. Seitzer is now hitting coach of the Braves, apparently. Karma for Mottola?
  21. On the bright side, when Alex hears of this, he will go for his "dream job", and the Jays could trade him to the Expos for a bench bat.
  22. I have no issues with Pompey in LF and Gose/Pillar platooning in CF (Pillar in LF and Pompey in CF against lefties) as long as the saved money is spent on improvements. I'm talking Headley at 3B calibre upgrades. If the Royals making and possibly winning the World Series smartens AA up on the importance of defense, then we should all thank Dayton Moore. I've never seen a GM disregard defense as much as AA/Gibby have the last two years (Bonehead at 2B, Francisco at 3B, Bautista in CF, Edwin in LF, Reyes at short, Sierra as the 4th OF, Arencibia/Navarro/Thole at catcher, etc).
  23. I think that's Gose's upside, which isn't too bad when you consider Dyson was a 3 win player this season as the 4th OF. The main difference is that Dyson is a passable offensive player, while Gose is pretty bad. If he is strictly platooned and starts running again, combined with his defense, Gose could be a decent CF option. I think his best role is probably 4th OF long-term, and when Pompey is ready to take over CF full-time, then maybe that will be the alignment.
  24. Agreed. Gose was at 1.3 last season in half a season's worth of AB's, and he was playing all over the outfield most of the time instead of strictly CF. If they utilize his base stealing ability a bit more, and he remains an elite upside defensive player, then I can easily see him and Pillar being a net positive out there.
  25. Maddon will sign with the Dodgers and then an hour later FireAlexAnthopoulos will bash Rogers for not beating their offer.
