  1. Agreed. As long as the Jays focus on adding impact talent without sacrificing the farm system, then these moves are designed to win short-term and long-term. If the Jays did nothing, then I'd agree with rebuilding, but adding Martin was too good to pass up, and now they should go all in.
  2. Option 1: trade Happ and Navarro for bullpen help, used saved money to sign McCarthy and Aoki. Option 2: trade Happ for Saunders, Navarro for pen help, and sign one of Headley or McCarthy (whichever one is willing to sign). I really think the Jays need another starter. Do not depend on Sanchez in a year they intend on competing, even with Martin's defense/framing behind the plate.
  3. If their ceiling is five years then Shields is probably more attainable. McCarthy and Liriano are the most realistic though. Isn't McCarthy a fan of advanced stats? Maybe having an elite framer will interest him.
  4. Didn't Davidi say that AA offered Anibal Sanchez an expensive five year deal prior to the Miami trade? If so, I guess there is some hope that AA would make a big offer to Martin, but I still think the chances border on slim and none.
  5. Free agency means outbidding. The Jays aren't going to get him for four years if that's what a better situation is offering. They need to go five. They probably won't. As usual.
  6. I would imagine 5/80 would have gotten Martin if he's going for 4/64. Too bad.
  7. Wilner was just on the radio and he talked about the importance of pitch framing and how Navarro is not good in that area (it was in response to Russell Martin's availability). I don't really follow Wilner so maybe he's talked about it before, but that's the first I heard anyone in the Toronto media mentioning the importance of framing. I'd like to think that AA told Wilner to say that in preparation for a Martin signing, but I know it will never happen. Just let me dream a little bit.
  8. If I said "I heard either Bautista or Beltran has demanded a trade, not sure which one"....how in the hell could that be considered news or even credible speculation? They are two different players on two different teams. It shouldn't be hard to know which one if you have a credible source. That was my point. The "report" about someone blocking a trade was stupid and phrased in a way that deserved criticism, not to be taken seriously. I hate this time of year when it comes to Twitter. Everyone tries to get hits or likes or retweets by being a Rosenthal wannabee. It's annoying.
  9. It's easy to get Kendrick and Utley confused. They look and play so much alike.
  10. If we agreed to pay the buyout, do the Yankees take Reyes for free? I mean, pay him $66M for three years and give up nothing in return?
  11. Morales for the same money as Lind would be better value purely on the fact that he won't need a platoon partner. If you could get Morales for less than Lind money, then you have to consider it. Even if he is only a 1.5 win player in a typical year that's pretty much as good as Lind is, except you won't need a platoon partner attached.
  12. I don't think the Jays will be doing business with Boras while Beeston is around so while Ddew would be a great fit, it's not going to happen. Drew at short and Reyes at 2B would be great, though.
  13. Why can't they just sign Aoki for 3/21 instead? That seems like a much safer and more practical use of money than overpaying for Melky. I mean, Martin would be the best option, but we all know that ain't happening.
  14. Everth and Izturis at 2B while Travis gets some AAA experience would be ideal, even if the Jays have to trade for him instead of wait for him to be non-tendered. Then when Reyes gets hurt, they can slide Cabrera over to short and call up Travis. Having Travis as depth instead of relying on him right off the bat would be better, although if he comes out guns blazing in Spring Training, then go with the hot hand.
  15. Yeah, people are sleeping on Gose, IMO. If he improves his offense even modestly, he's probably a 2 win player based on defense and base running alone, and he's still young enough to improve beyond that. It's still a good trade for Toronto as Travis fills a huge need and may end up being a 2-3 win player himself, but Gose is not as bad as some people think.
  16. Yeah, this is not even a debate. Martin is a clearly superior player, and far more likely to meet or exceed the value of his contract than Melky is. I don't think we could get Martin for less than five years though. I think 5/70 or 5/75 might get him.
  17. Sign Martin and Aoki. Trade Happ for Bastardo. Trade Navarro for anything. Non-tender Dirks, Mayberry, and Francisco. Let's do this.
  18. If the Jays are going cheap at CF and now potentially 2B, they have to have something big lined up, right? I mean, going into the season with Pompey at CF and Travis at 2B is one thing (at least they have upside), but Smoak at 1B and Dirks in LF is terrible. Maybe they give Melky the money he wants now without worrying about filling 2B.
  19. Alex 2010-11 is back. Excellent trade, and I'm one of the few who actually thinks Gose can be a decent MLB player.
  20. Gaining financial flexibility only to blow it on a closer definitely reeks of Toronto baseball post-1993, and Miller is someone who will go with the highest bid. This definitely scares me a bit.
  21. Yeah, I could see Happ for Bastardo being a real possibility. It seems the team is ready to roll with Sanchez/Estrada in the #5 spot, and Bastardo can become the closer (or Cecil becomes the closer and Bastardo replaces Cecil's role....no difference). As far as this "rumor", Hamels and Utley are both 4 win players, and Bastardo is probably a 1 win player at best. That would be a significant improvement if they made that deal without losing anyone on the MLB roster except replaceable parts (Happ, Romero, etc, for salary reasons + top prospects). Not sure the Jays should be making a deal like that given what they did two years ago, but at least the improvement figures to be great enough to add nearly 10 wins to the roster depending on how healthy Utley stays and whether Hamels can transition to the AL East (which I think he would). Very expensive and short-sighted though, which is right up AA's alley.
  22. Reyes to the Mets makes a lot of sense. How much salary the Mets would be willing to take is the question.
  23. Oh no, Gordon Beckham. The Jays are linked to him practically every year. Don't do it Alex.
  24. I'm almost certain they will trade Happ and put Sanchez in the rotation (with Estrada being the emergency swing man option in case Sanchez fails). AA is going to invest in the bullpen. Whether he should or not is another story, but he will. No way around it. We just have to hope he doesn't spend most of the available money on the pen, and instead values the defense and offense.
  25. I remember reading that AA made a higher offer to Grilli than the Pirates did but Grilli ended up re-signing with Pittsburgh. Wouldn't surprise me if he brings Grilli in with a promise of closing. My first thought was K-Rod (all dem saves!), but maybe he'd go with Grilli instead. I'm going to go with AA signing Grilli, Oviedo, and Asdrubal. Replace one of the relievers with K-Rod if applicable. Anyone expecting a major splash will be disappointed.
