  1. I think Gose would be a solid 4th OF. He had a 1.3 WAR last season and didn't hit at all. Put him in a Jarrod Dyson type of role (4th OF, defensive replacement, pinch runner with a green light) and he'll be solid. He may even be a passable starting option if platooned, especially given how much ground he would cover in the OF, but if Pompey is starting CF and Gose is 4th OF, I think the team is in good shape there. Just find a capable LF. My ideal scenario is buying low on Craig Gentry and putting him in LF. That's a CF calibre glove in LF who can hit a little bit (though he would add to the injury risk for this team). Gentry in LF and Pompey or Gose in CF will cover a ton of ground.
  2. The amount of failed starters turned bullpen aces in the Royals and Orioles bullpen still makes me wonder why some are against trading Sanchez and Norris for Donaldson. The odds of Sanchez and Norris becoming #3 or better SP's in the bigs is not very high, and with Sanchez it's far more likely he'll s*** the bed as a starter for a few years before turning into Andrew Miller at age 25/26 when all hope is lost. Seriously, I know it was just a trade made up by someone on this forum, but trade Sanchez/Norris/Lawrie for Donaldson. Hell, throw in another prospect and get Oakland to include Gentry. Kill two birds with one stone.
  3. Lawrie can't stay healthy and Sanchez has a much better chance of sticking as a reliever than starter. Norris is really the only one I'd be reluctant to move, but the fact that you'd be getting a star 3B in return eases the blow.
  4. Ugh. Just saw Saunders' numbers against lefties. No more platoon players.
  5. Would the M's move Chris Taylor as well? He'd be a nice long-term option at 2B.
  6. I don't know if they'd want to, just that I don't think they'd take all of Reyes' salary so the Jays would have to take one back. Gardner plays LF and Alex allegedly wanted Beltran a few years ago so those were names that made sense. Whether the Yankees would do it is another story (I'm sure they'd do Beltran for Reyes but that wouldn't help the Jays in terms of positional versatility).
  7. jaysfan2014 is like the Orioles jinx. He needs to stop making predictions for the sake of the Blue Jays.
  8. I'm guessing they'll overpay for Hanley now, but I'm sure they'd have interest in Reyes. Maybe if they Jays took back Beltran or Gardner to offset the salaries somewhat (preferably Gardner).
  9. He also said the Tigers would slaughter the Orioles. Damnit. He also said the Red Sox won't make the playoffs next season, which means they definitely will. Crap.
  10. Great deal for the Orioles. I thought he'd get at least 4/48 on the open market.
  11. It's not Alex's fault that Abreu wouldn't take the one year deal with four team options that was offered to him by the Jays. It was very reasonable.
  12. Puig is a 5 win player with five years of control left at age 23, and Donaldson is a 6-7 win player with four years of control at age 28. If they use whatever money they save on those deals on getting a starter, that team is in a good spot short and long term.
  13. The Dodgers can't be crazy enough to trade Puig, can they? If they are, then Bautista (as much as I want to win with him) for Puig, followed by Lawrie/Norris/Sanchez for Donaldson and watch the money roll in.
  14. I'm still somewhat hopeful that Gibbons will be canned. They can just promote Hale from the bench.
  15. If all Crawford is at this point in his career is a 2.5 WAR LF, then I'll take the 3 WAR short-stop over him for the same cost. If the Dodgers want to throw some other players in, then I'm willing to listen, but a 1-for-1 doesn't benefit the Jays at all.
  16. Beeston and AA are company yes men. Rogers has no reason to let them go. When they say jump, Alex (despite what is probably a terrible vertical leap) will try his best to get his feet off the ground, and Beeston would be right there with him. As long as Rogers is making money off the team, they won't make any changes.
  17. 2015: $4.0M 2016: $4.5M 2017: $6.5M (team option, $250k buyout) 2018: $7.5M (team option, $250k buyout) 2019: $8.5M (team option, $250k buyout) He is 26. Best seasons were a 1.9 WAR in 2010 and 1.1 WAR in 2013. Seems like a decent defensive LF but terrible CF and RF. Yep, he'll be a Blue Jay soon. Pencil him in.
  18. Crap. Tabata is going to be the starting LF next season, isn't he?
  19. If the Jays made that deal for Donaldson, they could trade Happ and Lind if they wanted to save money to add improvements. They could also trade Navarro if they had a good defensive replacement lined up (maybe the Royals would give Kratz back to us?). They wouldn't have to trade Dickey or Buehrle. As far as Sanchez, while I would have fewer doubts about him if he were pitching in Oakland's park, he is still a huge question mark as a starter. High upside but also high risk. Beane could afford to take that risk in this hypothetical because he is paying for upside and cost control, but if the Jays want to win next season, they would be foolish to pencil Sanchez in without adding a Donaldson level talent somewhere to offset that risk. There are ways to go cheap and not have to depend on Goins and Pillar and Kawasaki as depth. The Jays need to find a way regardless.
  20. If the deal were Red Bull, Sanchez, and Norris, then I'm not sure how that ruins the team's depth. The starters are not projected to be major contributors for the 2015 team (unless they slot Sanchez in the pen) and Lawrie misses half the season in a healthy year. I could understand any reservations if they were subtracting from the big league club to acquire him, but in that hypothetical deal, I don't see the downside for 2015. The downside would be 2016 when they would have to replace 2/5 of the rotation with Nolin and Graveman, but a lot can happen in the minors in one season to change that outlook. I mean, who projected Norris as a 2015 rotation option before this season?
  21. Yeah 2014 payroll increased because of backloaded contracts to existing players but that won't be the case in 2015 because declining options can lower payroll on its own. If they want to shed salary well below 2014 levels then they can do it without making a single trade. Just decline options. If Beeston says payroll is going up, and it's reasonable to assume everyone with options except Lind and Happ will be declined, then if payroll doesn't improve Beeston is a snake and a liar. I think he is a snake and a liar so I'm not expecting a damn thing to increase except fan annoyance.
  22. Making that trade for Donaldson and then using freed up cash to sign someone like McCarthy would work for me. Still would need a 2B, but some defensive guy like Pennington would be serviceable since Donaldson is good enough to compensate a bit for that. As far as Donaldson being available, it wouldn't go against Beane's history. He's traded guys like this before with their arby years remaining (3+ years).
  23. I think Lawrie, Sanchez, and Norris makes far more sense from the Jays perspective since they don't lose a starter from their big league club, and Lawrie to Donaldson is about a 4-5 win improvement depending on how you view Lawrie. It will make the 2016 rotation a little dicey (Buehrle and Happ free agents, and Dickey has a team option), but if you want to win in 2015, then that's the deal to make.
  24. With Donaldson apparently a trade candidate, what would it take to get him? Probably more than the Jays would be willing to trade but if we are talking about difference makers who won't make a ton of money, Donaldson fits that criteria perfectly. Maybe trade Lawrie to a third team to get more prospects to send to Oakland (assuming Lawrie still has enough value for that).
  25. Better to make it to one extra game than not, but yeah, if the Jays ever make the playoffs again, I hope they win the division.
