  1. What's the point of stretching Sanchez out in ST if they're going to use him in the pen? We all know he's going to the pen, as much as they try to say they view him as a starter.
  2. Hutchison threw 185 innings in his first full season back from Tommy John Surgery (most teams cap innings at 140-150 in those instances). Verducci seems to think Stroman and Norris are injury risks due to having an excessive increased workload from the year before, and while stuff like that needs to be taken on a case by case basis, it's still worth keeping an eye on. Maybe those guys keep pitching well, and I hope they do, but you can't bank on it. Adding a Shields type or hell just adding depth in general would have been nice for the event that you do have to deal with injuries. Last season was abnormally healthy for the Jays staff. With DIckey and Buehrle that can be expected, but the more youth you count on, the more risk is involved. That's why, despite my feelings on Sanchez (he's not a starter long-term, IMO), I think the Jays should put him and Norris in AAA, Estrada as the #5, and Redmond as the long man. That way you have both Norris and Sanchez stretched out in case of need, and then the team is 7-deep with some intriguing arms in Double-A that might get promoted quickly (Boyd, Cole, etc).
  3. SP depth. The rotation has two guys that should throw 200 IP each (Dickey/Buehrle), and one guy who should be able to at least stay healthy (Estrada), but then it's all young pitchers (Stroman, Hutchison, Norris, Sanchez, etc). I'm more worried about injury than I am performance, and if injuries hit, forget it. Depth is minimal at best. That's why if there is a glimmer of hope to sign Shields to a 3 year deal, then do it.
  4. If Shields is dropping to 3-4 years, then do it. Might look like an overpay in years 3 and 4, but even Buehrle's heavily backloaded deal turned out to be decent value so you never know. If it goes down to 3 years, then I'd even do 3/60. The years are more important than the AAV. Just trim some fat by trading Navarro, Estrada, etc. No way I do five years though, and I'd be nervous with four (would still do it if reasonable though, like 4/60). Three is a no brainer.
  5. I think Sanchez will be in the pen and Estrada will be the 5th starter. AA clearly has no money left to spend, and that's the most effective way to use the roster he has created. Sanchez as a starter, unless it's in AAA, will be a bust, and I think AA knows that.
  6. I'm sure Rogers is going to give $80M to a guy they want to replace (AA) so he can sign Shields.
  7. Possibly. I remember reading that Beane wanted Syndergaard (+ others) for Gio, and AA refused, but maybe I'm mixing that up with something else. I guess Gio was possible, while Latos may have required more going to the Padres since it was too early in Syndergaard's career.
  8. They made moves to win over a 3-5 year period. How do you expect people to judge these trades? A bad trade is a bad trade but one that helps an overall goal is better than nothing. Cone for Kent is one of the worst trades ever, we just don't harp on it because it accomplished the desired result.
  9. If the Jays make the playoffs and/or win a World Series with Dickey in the rotation, then the three players we gave up could be HOF'ers and I'd get over it. You have 1 (maybe 2) more years, R.A. Don't let us down. Edit: but the trade itself was bad. No question. That package the year before could have gotten Latos or Gio, possibly.
  10. As a reliever.... AAA: 3.16 ERA, 31.1 IP, 34 H, 9 BB, 22 K, 1 HR MLB: 0.00 ERA, 3.0 IP, 2 H, 2 BB, 5 K, 0 HR (1.80 FIP) Give him a chance. He is out of options and has four years of control left. A lot of failed starters improve their command and become solid relievers out of the bullpen. It's not like the Jays don't have the openings to give him a look. I still have hope. He's done as a starter, though. One inning reliever, max.
  11. I am sensing Dustin McGowan on a minor league deal is going to happen soon.
  12. Rogers realized he would cost $1.7M if he made the team and pulled the plug. Wait unil they find out Santiago's salary if he makes the team.
  13. People still value Law's opinion on prospects? The guy knows s***. Still waiting for Zach Stewart to become the four pitch ace that he was projecting.
  14. Wow, I thought a new development happened for this to reach 14 pages. I should have known better.
  15. Travis starts, Santiago backs him up, Izturis is DFA, and Goins/Kawasaki are in AAA. Done.
  16. I still have hope for Drabek. Maybe I'm alone in that. Give the failed starter a chance.
  17. Santiago earns $1.1M if he makes the team. Looks like Izturis/Santiago at 2B until Travis saves us.
  18. @Wilnerness590: Very surprised Santiago career splits are so similar. But he did crush lefties from 2007-11, albeit SSS. #Bluejays #Jays Wilner at his finest.
  19. Santiago is going to save us from Belisario's excessive groundball-itis.
  20. You must be a huge fan of the Estrada trade. Flyball pitcher with Saunders and Pompey in the outfield.
  21. @Wilnerness590: Hearing that #Bluejays are likely to announce Belisario signing today. Expect it to be a minor-league deal. #Jays #QuantumLeap If it's a minor league deal, then I don't see an issue with it. One of him or Lopez should be able to contribute.
  22. Wilner is saying he expects it's a minor league deal. If that's true, nice deal.
  23. Morosi saying a deal is very close now. Don't know why Belisario warrants multiple updates before it's even official. I guess Morosi looking for dem Retweets.
  24. Man, Izturis will get $4M this year (counting the buyout). Couple that with Romero's $8.1M (counting buyout), and that's so much money being spent on crap. Imagine eliminating those two deals and then trading Navarro? It's a whole new ball game. Damn.
  25. If Travis is the starting 2B, then the back-up infielder will have to play some SS, which would eliminate Izturis from that spot. Probably Goins or Kawasaki in that scenario. Pillar, Valencia, Goins, and Navarro would be my guess with the above lineup. I still think the 0 WAR tandem of Izturis/Goins will win out over Travis, though.
