  1. Yeah, the Jays have openings in LF and RF, plus can tell Morales to f*** off and eat up the rest of the contract if they had to in order to free up the DH spot (the excess value from Ohtani would easily make up for $23m in sunk cost by dumping Kendrys). Tell him he can play some outfield, some DH, and have a rotation spot. Have Koehler or whoever the sixth starter is get some starts here and there to give Ohtani more rest during the season. Then you can sell the high performance dept, the country, etc. If Ohtani is a liberal, then use that trump card (pun intended). Just do whatever the hell it takes as long as it doesn't break any rules. Atkins seems confident that they can at least make a strong case, so who knows. Maybe just wishful thinking in the end, but if Ohtani's personality is as unique as they say it is, then every team probably has a shot. If he decides not to play for the Jays, then as long as he's not in the AL East, I'll be fine with it.
  2. To be fair to the Braves, AA was likely going to trade 75% of the prospects they lost anyway. Just now they lose them for nothing instead of getting overpriced 30 somethings in return. /throwing shade at Alex. But seriously, that is a stiff penalty, and I agree it was with Ohtani in mind. I guess unless they implement an international draft, this type of stuff was bound to happen. Braves just got caught.
  3. Well clearly whatever he wants that's legally allowed. I'm not expecting Shatkins to promise him a deed to a house or something. Ex. Tell him he's a full time DH, tell Kendrys to f*** off, and use an extra starter so that Ohtani can get additional rest during the season. Things like that. I'm sure every team will offer him that, but maybe those big words that Shatkins uses to illustrate a point can convince him.
  4. Otani will be posted. I know it’s a huge long shot, but dammit Shatkins find a way to make it happen. Promise him whatever the hell he wants.
  5. Keeping him because they like him and keeping him because they fear someone will take him are two different things. I'm saying they didn't have to fear the latter. History and common sense kind of makes that obvious. I'm sure teams would have taken a chance with Tellez if all they had to do was keep him on the 40 man, but the 25 man roster all season coming off the year he had? No way. Established first baseman with big league success are having trouble getting jobs, you think some team would have started Tellez everyday in the bigs in 2018 or kept him on the roster all season when he can't play a position? Yeah, no. He's young enough to improve so I have no issues keeping him around, I'm just saying the chances of another team taking him were slim, and keeping him all season were even slimmer.
  6. A DH/1B with no versatility, no defensive value, coming off a dreadful season where he displayed no power and couldn't hit lefties. I mean I guess it's possible he could have been picked up, but I think more likely Shatkins probably liked him enough to hold on to him.
  7. I don't see the point in protecting Tellez. No one was going to take him, and even in the event someone did, the chances of him sticking when his only position is DH was pretty slim.
  8. Damn if the Yankees get Ohtani, that is going to suck.
  9. They should be patient this winter with the hitting market. Teams will probably want to save money for next year's loaded free agent class, and the market for no-D power hitters has crashed the past two years. If they wait until his price drops, then they might get a decent deal out of it.
  10. IF Gift causes the Jays to get rid of Goins, then he really would be a gift. I doubt it though.
  11. The Jays traded a cheap asset two years ago so they could pay $4m to Jesse Chavez to serve as a swing man. I think they’ll bring Koehler back. The SP market is trash.
  12. Jansen, McGuire, Pannone, and Greene would be my guess. I'd be surprised if we didn't see at least one trade today.
  13. Yeah I don't see it either. Cashman is running the team like a mid market GM. He's not going to waste his money on Cobb when he can wait a year and put it towards Machado and a much better free agent class. He will probably end up signing CC to a one year deal.
  14. That would actually make keeping Donaldson for a year more reasonable, depending on where it puts the Jays in win projection (plus whatever else they add in addition to Ohtani). If the team and ownership's goal is to avoid rebuilding, and lose free agents without missing a beat, then this is the type of move they'll have to find a way to pull off.
  15. Yeah his road numbers have consistently been s*** if I recall. Hard pass.
  16. Yes, I’m gonna beat that drum until it happens. Those two replacing Jarrod Dyson as my annual front office request. Witnessing 800 plate appearances by Goins and Barney can make someone repetitive (and crazy).
  17. The Yankees are apparently pursuing a trade for Profar. Cashman on top of things. That's exactly the type of risk the Jays should take, but Cashman will acquire him for jack s*** and he'll probably turn into something good.
  18. Yeah I meant stay there for this coming season. No way they miss out on Machado who I think makes way too much sense for them. I haven’t looked at their payroll situation but they are really young with only one bad contract (Ellsbury). They might be able stay in the tax range and still sign a top free agent a year from now.
  19. The Yankees want to get under the luxury tax (and stay there), plus they value prospects just as much as the Jays do. No way they touch Stanton's contract, nevermind give up prospects on top of that. I definitely see them making a splash in free agency '18 though. I could see a Machado-Didi-Torres infield for them, left to right.
  20. Not surprised he vetoed Boston. The racist stigma is pretty strong about that city, in more sports than just baseball.
  21. What I never understood about Darvish was, wasn’t it a blind bid? How did it leak that the Jays won? I remember being excited about getting Darvish but don’t remember who started the nonsense.
  22. Goins will find his way onto the roster somehow because we don't deserve nice things, but sounds like they want a super utility player who can be a starting calibre player in a bench role. That either means someone like Nunez, or a trade for someone like Profar. Or could be a subtle way of introducing Gurriel as a 2018 option (though not sure if he's ready for that).
  23. I am also pretty surprised that Atkins was so honest. Usually he speaks in corporate speak, but he is not even trying to downplay his interest here.
  24. The best fit for JD is probably the Cardinals. They seem really determined to make a trade, and have excess where the Jays need immediate help (outfield). Unless the Braves want to sell tickets with the mirage of competing, I don't see ATL doing it. Someone like Stanton would make more sense for them, especially since Alex likes to pay players big money when they are no longer elite players.
  25. http://torontosun.com/sports/baseball/toronto-blue-jays/cant-imagine-a-better-fit-blue-jays-gm-trying-to-acquire-shohei-otani/amp Atkins slobbering all over Otani in that article. As mentioned, if/when he signs elsewhere it won’t be due to lack of trying. This man fits the Jays perfectly and the front office knows it.
