Maybe he has learned something from his two years in LA about actually developing his young players rather than trading them for someone else's mistakes, but who really knows. I'd love it if they traded for Stanton. Would fit AA's MO. Not gonna lie though, if AA turns into a GM that actually values player development and keeps his prospects, that will hurt. He could have done that in Toronto but went derp instead.

Leaves Toronto as a hero to the mouth breathers, has someone else deal with the post 2015 decline that was unavoidable due to the old roster/butchered farm system, and then signs on with a team that is young with a s*** ton of prospects. Say what you want about AA, but dude is smart. He will probably keep all his prospects now just to f*** with us.

They couldn’t rebuild after 2015 and 2016 for obvious reasons, and ownership probably doesn’t want to rebuild after rejuvenating the fanbase and increasing ratings/attendance/revenue. What they have done is rebuild while trying to field a competent team. Bringing Estrada back for one year instead of trading him for pennies on the dollar was actually a smart decision, he could have more value next summer or he could help the team get a wild card spot. Smith was traded at peak value, and Liriano actually netted a potential big leaguer which is more than they should have gotten for him. The front office hasn’t been perfect but they’ve blended rebuilding and trying to compete pretty well. They can change direction and rebuild pretty easily if they wanted to. Trading Donaldson would signify a direction change and while that would make sense it’s probably an ownership call.

The front office inherited a miniscule window to compete (basically one season) and luckily realized it rather than doubling down. Otani is a different animal entirely because he’s young and a long term piece that fits regardless of team direction. If they miss out on him it won’t be due to lack of trying.

Yeah that’s why I don’t mind the juiced ball. Home runs and high scoring games are exciting. I’d rather baseball be relevant and popular again, especially to kids deciding which sport to play in high school and college. The Bautista bat flip might be iconic in many ways because it may have started the backlash toward traditional old school thinking and embracing more celebration and “swag”. That’s what young people will gravitate to, and we saw a lot of that in this post season.

Money clearly isn't an issue for him since he could have waited a bit to come over and gotten paid, but wants to come now. I don't know what the Jays could offer from a situation standpoint that every other team can't, so it will really come down to his preference. Maybe selling Otani on the high performance department and things like that will help. Who knows. I guess there is a 1/30 chance, but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Baseball just had some of its best ratings and fan interest in the while the last two years with games lasting around 4 hours. The pace has never been the issue. The game is what it is. You have to market the stars better. If Mike Trout walked into a crowded building, how many people would recognize him? Compare that with LeBron James or Tom Brady. That's the issue with the game, but Manfred doesn't have a damn clue. As far as Otani, do anything within your power to make it happen, but it's a huge long shot. Just as long as he doesn't become a Yankee. That would be depressing.

If they keep JD, then chances are they are intentionally aiming for the 2nd wild card, so the bar isn't going to be high regardless. My guess is 2018 will be a cross between rebuilding like the front office wants to do and keeping asses in seats like ownership wants.

Looking at the free agent list, it does look like the type of season to go with 1-2 year stop gaps rather than sign someone to a long-term deal (three years). Most likely we will see a trade or two as well. Maybe trade for a back up infielder and sign a vet outfielder to a short term deal (Granderson, Dyson, someone like that). You could probably get some decent production out of Granderson/Dyson vs RHP platooning with Pearce, and then Pearce splitting time with Morales at DH. Unless they can trade for a young outfielder, which would be preferable, but unless it's similar to the Teoscar deal where they are giving up little/nothing of value, it probably won't happen. I don't see them trading JD until mid season if they are out of it, though.

Promise Otani a rotation spot and the DH role. Release Morales if you have to. By any means necessary, make it happen.

I don't think this front office is giving any free agent a contract greater than three years except international talent (Gurriel types). This free agent market is ass, so we might actually see some trades to patch holes this winter.

Dyson, Nunez, and Mikolas from that list. I'd also be interested in Chatwood if the price is reasonable, but the lack of QO might make him more attractive so I'm figuring he will be priced out of the Jays range. Cobb is qualified so he won't be on the radar. Shapiro hates free agency and he has said as much to the media. I think he'll go with short term deals, and the names I mentioned above will probably require two years tops, which is a safe number. The only FA i see this regime going bonkers for it Otani, but that doesn't appear too likely to happen.

Nah dude, this is the Orioles. They'll sign three s***** starters and somehow be leading the division in July with a negative run differential. I'm done trying to figure those bastards out.

Yeah, I don't think Tellez will be taken, and even if he is, I doubt he will stick a whole season with another team. A no field, no speed 1B who has to hit in order to have any value coming off the type of season he had in AAA is not going to get a full time gig or a bench gig in the Majors in 2018.

Nah, service time. I'll predict he gets called up mid-2019 (when the super 2 cut off ends). Jays know they have a gold mine here. They won't mess with his service clock.

Goins will be on the 25 man roster ten years from now, I am almost sure of that, so he's probably safe. Refsynder is definitely gone. I like the pick up too. Can't hurt.

If the cost is a 2nd round pick and $500,000 from the int'l pool, then I don't see Shapiro wasting that on Cobb. The qualifying offer probably means the Jays will look elsewhere. The problem is there isn't too much else out there. Maybe Chatwood?

Cobb getting the qualifying offer from the Rays. No longer lose a first for signing a qualified FA but still lose a pick (3rd round, I think).

Yeah, Tanaka's elbow could go at any moment. Was kind of hoping he opted out and the Yanks signed him to a longer deal, but Cashman is smart now, so that was never happening.

Nah, I trust this front office, I just don't believe Rogers will give them full autonomy for direction of the team. Losing JD for nothing in hopes of getting a wild card spot one for season seems like a very short sighted move, especially since they have no one realistically ready to replace him in 2019 (unless Vladdy goes god mode in '18 and reaches the bigs). I mean if they get a WC spot and end up going to the ALDS, then I'll take it since playoff baseball is awesome, but it's still Rogers looking at bottom line over what is best for the team long term.

I don't think they can do enough to turn the 2018 team into a division contender, but a 2nd wild card contender, possibly. I'm not sure that's even worth keeping JD for a toss up game on the road but Rogers gon Rogers. They don't realize that fans tuned out for two decades watching a mediocre but not terrible product and no one wants to see that type of s*** again.

I don't think Nunez can play short anymore either. He's more of a 2B/3B type now. If they give Kemp some reps at 3B to increase his versatility, then he's likely a decent utility option. But yes, ideally you'd want an infielder who can play short as well. Profar is probably a better fit then. Trying to think of young players who have either disappointed or are blocked. That's where the Jays need to be looking, imo.

I like Tony Kemp and Profar as trade targets. No way Kemp has any future with the Stros as he's not overtaking anyone on their current infield or their utility infielder (damn the Stros are loaded!). I'd rather have him than Nunez to be honest.
