Expecting Lindor to be an elite players into his mid-30's seems pretty optimistic. Getting age 27-32 Lindor would be great, but then if there's still something like 5/150 or 6/180 left on his deal after that, then it becomes a much riskier proposition. -

I wouldn't be against Gurriel as the main piece for Lindor, but I'd be wary of extending him for 10 years or whatever it would cost to lock him up before hitting free agency. -
Wonder what it would take to get Sonny Gray. He makes $10m in 2021 and $10m in 2022 + a $12m team option for 2023. That's nothing.

My guess is he ends up getting something similar to Donaldson's deal last winter (4/92), maybe a little less. I doubt anyone is giving him 5 years.

Agreed. The better option is clearly signing LeMathieu or Springer since both fill obvious needs, but a pivot towards Realmuto + trading catching depth, if that's what ends up being available to the Jays, has to be considered an option depending on the circumstances (what Realmuto would cost, what teams are offering for Jansen, etc).

I don't think the Jays should be investing that much in a catcher turning 30 either, especially since they have a lot of depth there (even though there's no guarantee any of them end up being as good as JTR) but realistically if they wanted to acquire an "impact" player this off season, then a few dominos could lead to Realmuto being the most realistic player who fits that criteria. Then they can trade Jansen for another area of need, and so on. My preference in this market is one of Springer/Bauer/LeMathieu, and I would think that's the Jays preference as well, but circumstances could change.

The Yankees tendered Gary Sanchez, so they might be out on the catching market, especially since they have to re-sign LeMathieu to a big deal. Not sure what other teams would be in on Realmuto at the price range he's looking for if the Mets sign McCann. If the Jays miss out on Springer and LeMathieu, and McCann signs with the Mets, then it might open up Realmuto to the Jays.

Realmuto's options would be very limited if this happens, with Philly losing $850 trillion due to Covid (give or take) according to their owner.

I'm pleasantly surprised by the Cole non tender as well. He didn't seem all that good last season despite the ERA, and cheap RP's are going to be plentiful in free agency so the more open bullpen spots (and the less spots occupied by replaceable parts), the better.

It's been over 30 days since FA/the off season started. You don't need 30 days to figure out who you want to protect from your minor league system and who you want to non tender. Could have probably had both those things done by the first week of the off season and nothing would have changed. Seems pointless to spread this out. Of course getting these things (NT deadline, 40 man roster adds, Rule 5 draft, etc) over with sooner doesn't guarantee FA/trade action happening any quicker, but it doesn't need to be spread out over a month and a half, either.

There are obviously more reasons than this (salary cap vs. non salary cap leagues, MLB suffered more losses due to Covid, etc), but I don't see the point in having the non tender date, 40 man roster cut off, and Rule 5 draft happen around a month (or more) into the off season. If all of this s*** was done by the first week of the off season, then we might have seen at least some activity by now. Not sure why everything needs to be so spread out. Even pre Covid this was an issue with MLB off seasons. Last winter was a bit of an aberration since there was a lot of money thrown around.

I wasn't suggesting the Jays sign Schwarber and I don't think they will. I was just taking a lighthearted dig at Atkins' love of that type of player. Jays need help up the middle. He's not it, obviously. He seems like a fit for the Indians who need OF's.

Heyman and MLBTR have speculated that they might. He's like a Ross Atkins dream player (hard hit/EV, barrels, bad defense).

Wong's probably going to happen. Although I'm fully on board with Grichuk for Segura if PHI is willing to do it.

If the Jays acquired Segura, there is no chance he plays SS over Bo. As mentioned he'd probably be the starting 3B who can cover all the IF positions when Montoyo wants to move pieces around. 2021: $14.25m 2022: $14.25m 2023: $1m (no way his $17m option is picked up) So you're looking at 2 years and almost $30 million. He wouldn't be a bad stop gap, but in this market that's an overpayment. If the Phillies are willing to eat up some money or take back a contract (Roark/Grichuk are the only "bad" ones), then it's worth looking into.

The Mets won't suck in 2021 most likely, but they are a harder long term sell even if they do spend money this winter. Syndergaard (recovering from TJS), Stroman, and Matz are free agents after 2021. So is Conforto. Nimmo and Lugo after 2022. deGrom can opt out after 2022 (he'll be 34 by then so who knows if he will). Their farm system got Brodie'd the last two years which doesn't help. So yeah, if Springer chooses the Mets, which he very well could, it won't be because of team situation.

Realistically, Springer's market is probably the Jays, Mets, and Red Sox if they are willing to spend (no clue if they are). Can't think of any other teams with the combination of need and willingness to spend that much in the current environment. I'm not sure the Jays would be Springer's first choice if the other two teams are legit after him, but money talks. I think Springer's probably the Jays best chance at the top end of the FA market. DJ appears to want to stay in NY and Bauer could sign with practically anyone for any amount of time and it wouldn't surprise me. Although if the Mets can't get Realmuto for whatever reason then signing JTR and trading Jansen for a CF/SP/3B might be a decent pivot, but he seems too perfect for the Mets for them to pass, IMO. Of course the non tender list tomorrow night might add some new possibilities.

I like that concept of the draft league. The MLB draft doesn't have the same juice as other leagues (NBA/NFL) due to 1) prospects not being known and 2) how far away they are from actually reaching the Majors, but this at least tries to help solve #1. Put the games on the MLB Network, MLB.tv, YouTube, etc. Couldn't hurt.

I could definitely see the Jays signing Springer. Of all the "impact" free agents available, he seems most likely based on need and likelihood of signing (DJ loves NY, Bauer is unpredictable, and Realmuto makes more sense for the Mets). But Morosi's sources are the voices in his head. I'd wait for someone credible to bring it up.

Trollosi knows what he’s doing. The Jays have a large online presence. All he has to do is put #bluejays and he’ll get a lot of engagement and possibly radio interviews. Every year people fall for it. We need Shapiro to pull a Steve Cohen and roast him on Twitter.
