This is a different market. Lots of supply, limited demand. The elite players will get paid, but if the worst case is the Jays get the best of the mid tier, then there’s potential for very good players to be added. Roark and Anderson were bad moves made in a market that was flush with buyers and cash. The same amount of investment in this market should go much further. I want the Jays to get one of the big 4 FA’s, all I’m saying is it’s not the end of the world if they don’t. They can still improve the team significantly elsewhere. How well they do is ultimately going to come down to internal young talent taking the next step. -

I think the good thing about where the Jays are is that they can miss out on the big 4 free agents and it wouldn't be a bad thing. This is not an old team with a small window. This is a team with its best years ahead of them. Letting the market come to them instead of spending foolishly early is going to pay off in one way or another. Maybe it ultimately won't lead to Springer or Bauer, but there are still good to very good players available after those guys that could help the team short term, and the Jays have the advantage of being a team willing to spend. -

Possible, and even the Mets might decide to shed money elsewhere if possible to make a deal happen, but based on everything out there it doesn't appear that teams are looking to spend big this winter. -
I'm a Stroman fan, but not sure what his motivation was with that tweet. Seems like he's deleted it so common sense must have kicked in.

I don't think the Jays would lower their offer if the Mets decide to bow out, so it really depends on whether the rumored 5/115 is the best deal out there for him, and how close the 2nd best offer is. I don't think there's a chance in hell he takes a one year deal at his age. -
I don't think DJ is leaving the Yankees, and Realmuto is probably sticking with the Phillies, but yeah, if the Mets are sitting out, then the Jays have a real shot at one of Springer (likely) or Bauer (less likely due to more competition). There might be outside shot of luring DJ away from NY if the Jays offer a 5th year, but not sure they want to do that (and they probably shouldn't).

If the Mets are out, then I don't see any other logical spot for Springer. Teams that have holes in the OF probably don't want to spend $100+ mil right now to fill it. The Mets could start the season as is or just sign JBJ and still be one of the better teams in the NL. The Jays seem to be in a pretty decent spot with him, but who really knows. IIRC, they offered 4/80 to Ryu early and didn't budge on it, then Ryu came back to them later and accepted it. I could see a similar scenario playing out with Springer if the Mets have truly moved on. Springer doesn't strike me as someone who is going to take less money to avoid Toronto, he will probably go where the money is, so as long as the Jays are the top bidder, they are in the driver's seat. -

Another thing to keep in mind, especially if the Jays have trouble attracting top flight players, is to keep Bichette happy. He wants to play SS, he’s young enough to improve with more reps there, and he’s also very likely the best all around player the Jays will have over the next five years. I wouldn’t mess around with his position unless it was necessary and he’s not Vlad level defensively at SS. I’m fine with missing out on Lindor either way.

Yeah if he was coming over to MLB, a deal probably would have been reached by now. He's probably staying in Japan. He might still get a good MLB deal next winter at age 32, but obviously with pitchers it is always a risk.

Cleveland trades recently always seem to be a blend of MLB player(s) + prospects. It's their attempt to stay somewhat competitive in a weak division while "improving" their farm system. If they wanted a SS in return, then the Jays didn't really matchup with them even if Shatkins was serious. The Indians can sign outfielders for dirt cheap in the FA market. A SS would have been more expensive. Like I said before, I don't think the Jays were ever really serious. It made no sense to go after him given Bichette having 5 years of control left and a 10+ year extension is not something Shapiro does.

I don't know about Turner, but I wonder if the chances of getting Springer have increased now. Cohen is ridiculously wealthy, but assuming they can extend Lindor, do the Mets want to spend $55-60M for two players for the next 5-10 years? Stroman and Syndergaard are FA's after 2021 so their rotation will need to be retooled in 2022-beyond as well. I mean, they could totally sign Springer, but it wouldn't shock me at all if they pull a McCann and go for the cheaper JBJ at this point and spend the rest on other holes (SP/RP).

Sounds like what's known of the deal so far is Rosario, Gimenez, Wolf, and Greene going to Cleveland. I would imagine Springer is still a top priority for them, but Lindor is going to require a huge extension and Cano's money comes back on the books in 2022, so curious how much Cohen is going to be comfortable adding to future payroll.

Passan saying Gimenez would be part of the deal if it happens. Wow. That would be a big domino for this off season.

If Sugano came over last year and asked for 4/56, I think some team may have given it to him (or close to it), so I don't think it's an unreasonable ask on his part. It's just bad timing for him. I'm not sure of his mindset as it relates to playing in Toronto, as I'm sure he'd prefer a West Coast team, but if the Jays offer to him is around what they offered Gausman (3/40-ish according to Rosenthal), and that also happens to be the best MLB offer he's going to get, then it's not going to be easy for him to turn down. Hard to say without knowing what TOR's offer is. My guess is he stays in Japan, but money can change minds.

Passan's latest tweet promoting his article on ESPN+ has this as a teaser: "why Tomoyuki Sugano may be leaning toward a return to Japan". That would be pretty disappointing. He might be using his Japan offer as leverage but he really has no reason to take a bad (for him) MLB deal when he has a fallback. Curious to see how this plays out.

Replacing Ibaka and Gasol with Boucher (playing more) and Baynes is a big reason for this start. Even a declining Gasol was a smart defensive player and a good passer. The front court loss is huge, and it's making an impact on D and on offense. Any time you lose a top 5 player (Kawhi) + players who could start on a championship team (Green, Ibaka, Gasol) and not replace them with even an established NBA rotation player aside from Baynes, or a high upside young player, then it's going to be tough to keep winning. It is still early, but no way this team succeeds beyond a 1st round exit with the current front court. Plus, Siakam is looking like not quite an all star anymore, and a lot of the team's success was riding on him taking that next step. He's actually regressed since the bubble.

I'll probably be relieved if Lindor is traded somewhere else rather than disappointed. As far as the others, free agency is a two way street. Both sides have to want to do the deal, and the Jays are in a tough selling point (not sure where they will play in 2021 and then the usual Canada/America issue). The good news is, even if they miss out on the top end of free agency, they'll be at an advantage in the second tier market as one of the few teams willing to spend big. Hendriks is an example of that assuming they can get him.

Yeah, the Jays offer is going to have to be significantly better than SF's for him to choose Toronto, IMO. The Mets being out is definitely a positive in regards to Sugano, but makes it more clear they are saving up for Springer.

Hard to see him choosing the Jays over the West Coast or NY, but let's see what happens.

There’s going to be more Bauer’s and Stroman’s as the league gets younger and more accepting of personalities/branding. It’s going to piss a lot of baseball purists off, but about time baseball gets some personalities that put themselves out there. I personally don’t care for Bauer but I hope he keeps doing what he’s doing. The stuff he puts out on YouTube, especially the roundtables he does with other players is great. But yes his personality is going to be polarizing.

Yeah Bauer doesn't hide the fact that what he's doing is entirely to build his "brand". I actually like that and hope more players do it because my god MLB off seasons are boring as s*** so players engaging with fans to get them excited during the winter is a good thing. But I wouldn't take anything Bauer says about specific teams seriously. He is trolling everyone to gain more followers and get more people talking about him.

There really isn't a perfect CF option if/when Springer signs with the Mets. JBJ is flawed, KK is flawed, and Grichuk is flawed. If Jonathan Davis could hit at all he'd be the best option, but I think best case for him is 4th OF who start against LHP. If there's a pre breakout Trent Grisham type of OF who another team doesn't appreciate, then now would be a good time to make that deal. Otherwise running Grichuk back for another year might be just as good as the alternatives. I’d be fine with JBJ though. Short term and can be platooned.

Kiermaier has 2/26 left on his deal. JBJ should cost less than that and is a FA so won't have to trade anyone for him (although KK shouldn't cost much in a trade). But man the CF market after Springer is very thin. Apparently the Jays are one of 4 teams looking at Haruki Nishikawa (posting period ends in a few days). He plays pro baseball and has a pulse, so of course the Jays are being linked to him, but I doubt they would view him as a legit CF option.

Bauer's response to Heyman seems to suggest that he's more upset about "agent declines to comment" rather than the actual story itself. I guess Heyman could have written "agent could not be reached for comment" or something along those lines. I don't necessarily blame Heyman for the wording since it's semantics, but that might have been what caused Bauer's response.
