  1. Sucks about Hatch. Thought he'd be a rotation contributor this season. Hopefully his injury is not too bad but sounds like it probably is. Pitching depth can deteriorate instantly in this league so you can never be satisfied.
  2. LeBron, Mahomes, Magic, Jeter. There's some big names in the ownership ranks in MLB.
  3. Tellez should definitely start over Grichuk in the lineup, even against lefties until Tellez proves he can't hit them. I think Buntoyo is going to play Grichuk way too much even when everyone is healthy, but Tellez is the much more intriguing player at this point.
  4. The Jays want to contend this season, and as of now only 5 teams in each league are making the playoffs. I don't want the Jays to manipulate service time anymore regardless, but it's one thing to do it when you're tanking (Vlad 2019) and another to do it when incremental wins added can be the difference between a playoff spot or missing it entirely. If Kirk is legit, and he looks that way with the bat, then he should be on the team. Split time with him and Jansen, DH him on certain days, etc.
  5. Charles and Shaq want to see basketball, not just 3 point shots. That’s the point. That’s a growing sentiment among fans who have watched for a while. The game has lost a lot of aesthetic value because everyone is jacking up 3’s, and if they miss or it’s not working, then just keep shooting it. I’m sure many people enjoy the current NBA, but there’s a fair bit of criticism about the way it has evolved due to analytics. Similar issue with baseball, only difference is baseball has more reason to change (not as popular with younger demo). When Steph retires and there’s bootleg versions of him jacking up 15 threes a game, I think the NBA will address it. Time will tell.
  6. I believe the NBA's national ratings are down even pre-dating Covid, but popularity is definitely still there, so we will see. I watch Inside the NBA, and Barkley/Shaq basically take turns pissing on today's NBA, so maybe it's a generational thing. If younger people (18-34) like the excessive 3 point shooting, then it probably won't hurt them. It's a bigger issue for MLB since their fanbase tends to lean on the older side, so they need to do more to attract a younger audience. More action (balls in play, stolen bases) plus some type of pitch clock so it doesn't take an eternity between each pitch would definitely be a noticeable change (for the better).
  7. I've been seeing more complaints about the excessive 3P shooting in the NBA lately. The 3P shooting in the NBA is basically what the three true outcomes is in baseball. It can still be fun and exciting, but overall a lot of the exciting parts of each sport have been taken away because of it (mid range game and post up/back to the basket game in the NBA, and stolen bases/balls in play in MLB). The difference is MLB realizes it needs to evolve the sport in order for it to become more visually pleasing, while the NBA is not seeing an issue. Granted, the NBA is more popular nationally, so it's likely less of a concern for them than MLB, but I can't imagine watching 100 3P shots a game is going to not be a more heated debate as the years go on (especially once Curry retires).
  8. I have no issues with any of those to be honest. I think we are at a point where TTO baseball is universally hated by everyone; fans, media, and players alike. You can't stop teams from embracing analytics, so it's either make changes like this to add much needed action to the sport, or continue to watch the aesthetic value of the game decline. Balls in play, stolen bases, and pace between pitches are significant issues, and at least MLB is trying to do something with this rather than the NBA model of watching the game evolve into 2.5 hour 3 point contests all game long and doing nothing about it. Of course, execution will be important, so I'd have to see these new rules before I judge completely, but on the surface they look fine to me.
  9. The Jays seem to keep pitchers as SPs for as long as possible. If they are committed to Borucki as a reliever-only then they likely don't see him lasting as a SP, either due to durability or something else.
  10. Well I hope the Jays are done manipulating service time as a whole, but regardless, with Kirk the question should be whether they want him getting regular AB's/reps at catcher in the minors or are willing to split time with him and Jansen in the Majors. The latter seems more like a "win now" move since Reese probably sucks, and Adams can be the AAA catcher as he's already on the 40 man.
  11. Mather not only made himself and the team he worked for look bad, but he also threw the entire league under the bus. This situation might end up being a great thing for the MLBPA. Granted, if anyone could air ball a wide open layup, it would be Tony Clark, but having an exec admit that service time manipulation was an organizational stance (something everyone knew already but no one was dumb enough to admit out loud) certainly isn't going to make the next CBA talks easier for MLB. The stuff about speaking English is just ridiculous. Even if he felt that way, and even if others in the league agree with him, what was the point of saying it out loud? The M's actually have an advantage with Asian players due to Ichiro and others. He was hurting his own competitive advantage. From any aspect you want to look at this from, it was stupid.
  12. The Cancel Culture bat signal is ready. Mather is next, and his firing will be well deserved.
  13. The sound of a Diesel Engine revving up.
  14. Walker gets 2/20 if he declines the player option, and 3/23 if he accepts it. Not sure that player option is all that appealing to Walker.
  15. I don't mind the Jays going with what they have until the trade deadline. It's risky without expanded playoffs to do that, but there will likely be a lot of sellers by June/July, so if the Jays can get by until then and remain in playoff contention, then there will be real trade opportunities for starters possibly better than (or similar to) Odorizzi and Walker. The issue is can they get by for a few months with a bottom of the rotation including Diesel, Matz, Ray, Stripling, etc? Not having to face just AL/NL East teams will probably help.
  16. Rosenthal has signed with the A's for 1/11.
  17. Yeah I think he could have waited four years and gotten a bigger deal than $340m after 2024, while getting around ~$60-65 mil in arb before that. Something like 4/65 in 2021-24 (one more pre arb year + 3 arb years) and then free agency starting at age 26. Of course, four years is a long ass time, and if someone is handing you $340m guaranteed at age 22, it would be damn hard to say no. Either way, he's going to end up making close to $400 mil in his playing career by the time he's done, plus he's one of the few baseball players I'm actually seeing in commercials, so that endorsement money is probably decent. Life is good for Tatis Jr. Curious to see what happens with Soto. The Nats are known to pay big money to free agents so I'm sure they'd give him a huge contract to stay a Nat forever.
  18. Agreed that Grichuk as a 4th outfielder is his best role. If they could get out of his contract in a trade then obviously do it and don’t look back, but that’s not happening in this market, so might as well use him in the most logical role for him.
  19. Fisher has some intriguing offensive tools, but the only way he will have any value as a player with no options left is on a team willing to give him PA's to see if his bat can take the next step. That's on a rebuilding team, not a team looking to contend. From the Jays perspective, they couldn't send him down, he was a 5th OF at best on the current roster, and he doesn't provide plus defensive value. Davis makes way more sense for this team, both because of options, and because his skillset fits the 5th OF role a lot better.
  20. That's the key for me between this one and 2012/2014. This winter legit feels like the beginning of a long, sustained run. The Jays are adding elite talent via free agency, kept their farm system in tact, and are prioritizing depth simultaneously. With AA, he was taking huge risks, but depth was never a priority, and it was always robbing Peter (farm system) to pay Paul (big league team). Exciting, but not sustainable even in a best case scenario (which 2015-16 probably was).
  21. https://fansided.com/2021/02/12/brewers-justin-turner-dodgers-marcell-ozuna/
  22. Safe to pencil in that $1.85m into the team's payroll. He's definitely making it.
  23. If the Jays want to maintain flexibility to get in on next year's FA market, then Price even at half his salary ($16m) doesn't make sense in 2022 (it's fine in 2021). The Dodgers don't need him, and I'm sure they'd love to have $16m freed up in 2022 when they need to re-sign Seager.
  24. I kind of admire Nightengale for being so bad at his job but yet confident enough to keep chugging along like people still take him seriously.
