His contract was fair, I think it was that and they didn't like his low effort style. My argument would have been "Who cares, he hit .350 against righties".
Although it had nothing to do with Donaldson, The Travis trade was meant for this season. My guess is he found the free agent options lacking and got a player with a decent floor to be used as soon as he's needed. He will be brought up shortly after either he succeeds in the minors or the MLB options fail.
He's better than replacement even if you made him face every lefty, He would have been a 1.5 WAR platoon partner. Smoak is a replacement player who does nothing well. Linds only downside was his cost and that another roster spot had to be spent on a platoon partner. A Lind/Valencia platoon would have been one of the best DH spots in baseball.
I would take the other side of that bet. Not sure who all has run out of options, but likely somebody he would be comfortable losing to make the team better. Really I think AA thinks using high upside pitching prospects he can have a decent bullpen for no money.
With Sanchez, Norris, and Hoffman, adding a mid rotation starter would have been at best a waste of money and at worst block a better, cheaper pitcher.
I would take the other side of that bet. The biggest variable is the quality of the players and at this point Jays just have a bunch of warm bodies. My guess though is AA knows this and plans on bringing up his best pitching prospects, Castro first followed by Osuna. I just think people overreacted to the bullpen falling apart last season and now think bullpens are too fluky to worry about, I think that's a fallacy.
The fact that a bullpen that's supposed to be good can be bad doesn't make it likely that a bad bullpen will be good. The idea that the bullpen is a coin flip regardless of what players they have is silly. Small sample size doesn't mean outcomes are completely random.
True. He got around what the Jays would have offered, but with a better chance to win, so likely that scenario never played out. Same could be said about the grumbling he did.
I guess AA thinks his decline was more than just his illness, or at least they didn't want to bet money on him. 5 mil would be good value if he returns to being a 1 WAR reliever.
I get the Saunders thing, but they could have moved Navarro instead of Lind, Wouldn't have brought in Estrada, but dollars would have been close. I guess the trade hinges on whether Estrada is useful or not, My bet is not.
I doubt the Donaldson trade would be considered into it since Norris and Sanchez replaced them on the depth chart. Saunders for Happ did factor into it though.
