  1. Anyone know what the Blue Jays did to pursue him? I know it was probably on the cheap, maybe an email or something?
  2. Unfortunately, they will probably pick up a couple of solid free agents still and make the playoffs next year with a solid young and developing team. Granted he would have put them over the top, I don't think it really matters, they are building a contender there for a while regardless. One of the teams that needed him the most was us, just because Yanks/Red Sox are so far ahead in the division now and have the financial resources to keep that spread even further.
  3. No one really expects Toronto to win the sweepstakes though. So we'll find out what we already know
  4. Damn there goes the Expos. It sucks, we also have a crappy new socialist mayor who doesn't like baseball either. Double whammy for us.
  5. Ya, I think they have 35-40m to spend this year, and they need another starter. They really don't technically need him, they have a solid OF. There are a lot of FA hitters this year also.
  6. Except, they are still trying to stretch that window. Look at some of the starters, and the fact they really didn't go full out sell mode at the deadline or before. I think this club will always be half in/half out, just trying to squeak by to sell tickets but never able to really compete since they won't do a full out rebuild. FO basically said they expect to field a competitive team next year, they might, but it won't be a team that can take the division unless they max payroll to say about 200m, just too many holes still and some prospects not quite ready.
  7. Probably less. It's going to come down to the usual teams that want to win. Jays will end up overpaying a guy like Bruce then get some other fillers/projects.
  8. Unless 2018 JD does what 2017 JD did. I think there's too much risk not trading him. He'll be 32 next year, there's a chance this is the new JD in terms of production. Teams will still have him next year, and hope he has a strong finish. You still might have a team trying to gamble this year knowing they have another year on him. A> JD stays the same = you get less next year B> JD gets injured = you get nothing C> JD performs worse = you get even less D> He performs better = less team control, teams still leary of 2017, he turns 32 The only reason you keep JD is not to get more trade value next year. It's to sell tickets, and give fans the false hope this will be a competitive team next year (when deep down we know it won't be possible unless Rogers goes to 200m and even then, it assumes we sign all the good FAs and everyone else exceeds expectations). Of course, Boston finished last then won the WS the following year, so PHI/CIN/TO could all win the WS next year lol.
  9. Go for what again? Last place? lol
  10. Ya of course not. The Blue Jays "EXPECT" lol, to be competitive in '18. When they aren't and they won't, they will flip him at the deadline. They will have to hope he's not injured or his numbers stay the same but they will get a lesser quality prospect next year for him. It's too bad, this club could realistically be pretty competitive in about 3 years if they retool properly. Holding onto 34 year old pitchers that could net you a decent prospect now would be pretty stupid even if the pitching market will be pretty thin this year.
  11. More injuries will make some of the BJ players more valuable to contending teams that need to find replacements. I just hope management is not that naive to think we have a chance this year and start making trades early.
  12. The rebuild hasn't even started yet, so let's hope it does this year.
  13. I like how Gibbons wobbles his way onto the field, like a little penguin.
  14. Age: Happ = 34 Estrada = 33 Martin = 33 JB = 36 JD = 31 Tulo = 32 Morales = 33 Obviously the entire team isn't over 30 and declining. But there are a lot of old big contract players and the deals that JB/EE had versus the value they were providing are no longer there. This is a team that is completely screwed short term, with no immediate help available and a very average minor league system that isn't even ready for a quick rebuild. We have to hope all our trade chips play to the highest level possible, and shapiro maximizes his return on every asset. Take a 3-5 year rebuild and come back with a new strong core.
  15. With that being said, we still need all our trade chips to play well. JD out for a month, is going to hurt his stock. Happ/Estrada need to pitch lights out, but I still don't think they will get as much in return as we think. But, at least the direction of the team is clear, unless Rogers is in denial and still wants to hold onto the 'window' lol.
  16. Are any of those top 25 prospects? or top 50?
  17. Except only Donaldson on that list can bring in decent prospects. Happ/Estrada, maybe a B level prospect, depending what they do until the deadline, but you are going to have to eat salary to trade JB at this point. That's the problem, the White Sox had assets to trade that were late 20s, team control, and actually star players, Jays only have 1 player and he's not even signed long term. If this club keeps Donaldson when they will not be competing for minimum 3 years if not more, it will be a VERY long unsuccessful road of mediocrity.
  18. And his numbers will be good in Colorado? I mean, that's a high upside risk Shatkins should have been all over. Him and Ross have tremendous upside.
  19. Well, the team will be the first to have a red jersey. red sox/cards/angels/nats/reds/phils
  20. did they mention the details on how the 2019 option vests?
  21. Thankfully it didn't happen, Jays would have went from a mediocre farm to the worst farm in the majors. I know Cutch has the skills to rebound but there is still a risk with him given how bad he was last year. Not to mention, JB and some other outfielders/relievers were still available to sign. That would have gutted this team dry long term, can't believe that could even be remotely accurate.
  22. Yes, it is called sustainability, and the Jays had some good contracts that expired. You are going to have to realize that what happened in the past, is the past. The future is very bleak right now, with not enough high upside prospects and management recognizes that. I think they also know trying to go all in again this year was too risky with an older team and more expensive players. This team needs to accumulate more younger talent, otherwise they will never compete with the retooling yanks and now powerhouse red sox. So I am sorry they haven't impressed you, but thankfully they didn't otherwise we'd be looking at an overly expensive non playoff team with even less chance of winning in the future (taking away 1st rounders etc..). I will reserve judgement until I see what they can trade happ/estrada/donaldson for and give them 3-5 years. This team won't be winning before then anyways.
  23. He'll have to pass a physical.
  24. Closer to 100 though, that's about it if we're lucky and he pitches well.
