    The Colon situation has some similarities, but it's hardly a perfect comparison. Regardless, the point stands, no teams are selling low on talented, controllable SPing, thus drafting it in abundance is in no way "poor draft strategy".

    Or he's stockpiling pitching via the draft because he realized that controllable position players with upside are more available at the major league level. Not just JB and EE, Rasmus and Lawrie as well. Even Melky Cabrera is a good example, coming of 3.7 and 4.4 WAR seasons and he signed for 8 million/season, what type of contract do you think an equivalent performing pitcher would have netted in FA?

    Uh, his 2011 season was in no way "pretty bad" lol. He's also had a lot more than "one good season" 3.9, 5.6, 6.5, 3.3, 3.2 WAR seasons, so...yeah. Aside from a horrendous 2012 his HR rate is not even remotely high, he' s a much better target than Santana in that sense. He also doesn't need to be "elite" to justify that salary, only to out preform it.

    If he`s willing, it`d probably be effective to have a reputable, dignified poster like Hurl make a redirect thread on the Jays`mlb.com board and bump it every once in a while. Hopefully it wouldn`t upset the resident posters and even if it did, Hurl wouldn`t feel the need to get in a pissing match with them. Anything more aggressive than that would probably cause more problems here than it`s worth.

    Yeah, there's a good point in there somewhere, it just needs to be refined. I almost stopped reading when I realized he'd distinguished the groups on the basis of 30 #1s, 30 #2s ect.

    Martinez`s development is a year ahead of Sanchez, made AA at 21 preformed well, impressive command. He`s a better comparison to Syndergaard than Sanchez. Price isn`t even remotely comparable, he was one of the more polished college pitchers in recent memory, he could have pitched the entire year in the majors rather than being a late season callup. If Buehrle and Janssen are enough to land Kendrick than yeah I do that in a second, but that`s a pretty lopsided deal given Buehrle`s salary.

    Can't compare Sanchez to Price or Martinez. Can't assume the 2014 Jays are in a similar September situation to that of the 2008 Rays or 2013 Cards. Sanchez just didn't belong in a post in which you also suggest trading Buehrle to see how the depth guys preform with more starts. In fact, if you trade Buehrle and start the season with the rotation you suggest, I'm positive this team won't be playing meaningful games in September and thus Sanchez can't make any kind of contribution.

    Jimenez and Santana both had horrendous 2012 seasons, but are likely going to be paid as if it never happened. Santana especially seems a likely candidate for a significant regression in my opinion. I'd still go higher than 3/36 for Jimenez though.

    Bautista, Encarnacion, Reyes, Cabrera, Sierra, Rogers, Perez, he may have a relationship with a few of them. Realistically though, he`ll probably take the best offer and it`s unlikely to be a factor. Edit: Even though it`s unlikely to be a factor in FA, I still think there`s some value in the so-called ``Dominican connection`. For example, if the price on Starlin Castro were low enough he`d be an excellent target. If the problem is in his approach as people are suggesting, EE and Bautista would be ideal teachers.

    It`s probably meant to be evaluated in isolation, not relative to other pitches.

    That`s interesting. Having seen guys throw in the upper 90s with no movement get squared up with relative ease I`m guessing movement accounts for more than 15%. At the risk of hazarding a truly terrible guess I`ll say 70/30 velocity/movement?

    Earlier in the offseason, Cecil+ a lesser piece would almost certainly have gotten it done. If that was indeed the asking price and Boras was the only issue, I`ll s*** a brick. I`ve moved on to hoping that Owings can still be had and Towers hasn`t fully recovered from the mini stroke he obviously suffered a few weeks ago.

    Hopefully it goes without saying, but I`m not advocating trading disproportionate talent to acquire any player, regardless of need. Espinosa`s appeal is based on tremendous 2B defense with considerably more offensive upside than this team currently has at the position. Additionally, he`s a very capable defender at SS (sadly probably better than Reyes), which is valuable when Jose inevitably goes down for an extended period. He`s also cost controlled. Strikeout rates aside, he`d be a nice addition to a team that has one viable middle infielder.
