  1. Aaron Laffey not available?
  2. Isn't Moncada on the White Sox now?
  3. I'll have to take your word on that one, and I'm not trying to be some contrary prick, or some ERA-is-gospel chest beater. I was just trying to defend the point that FIP might not necessarily measure results, but more like things that a pitcher can control that typically lead to good results. Sort of akin to the Morrow/Nolasco FIP vs RA9 WAR discrepancies, but with relievers instead. Either way, decent signing for no risk.
  4. I agree that FIP is far better stat, but I'd disagree that it better measures "results", at least in the way that I view them, which would be actual runs allowed. Obviously it's a way better way to predict like you said, and to compare pitchers in a context-neutral type of way, but to say the pitcher with the more runs allowed had better results doesn't make much sense to me, even if every run he allowed was due to park effects, bad defense, babip, etc.
  5. I'm guessing since RA9-WAR is based on run prevention, which would be considered "results", while FIP is based on peripherals which is a better stat for predicting. Since he clearly stated he doesn't think the two pitchers are similar going forward, I think he just meant that an argument can easily be made that Howell has been better than Cecil over the stated time frame.
  6. Exactly. I can't count the number of times I've seen Jose, Edwin, or Donaldson hit a ground ball into the shift with the bases empty and just jog down to first. Edwin would sometimes keep the bat for half of the run. Completely meaningless stat. 2/10 effort.
  7. I like having him back, but it really works out to a 1 year, ~25M+ deal, depending on how much you value the comp pick we no longer will get. There's no scenario where the mutual option is agreed upon. With teams not having to forfeit a 1st round draft pick to sign Jose next year (new CBA), I don't see any way the mutual option is picked up. Jose should easily be able to outdo 1-17 or 2-37 on the market if he has a decent year this year, especially since teams like NY and Boston could get in on the bidding without worrying about that draft pick. He would have to have an atrocious year to want to accept the 1-17 for next year, and in that case there's no chance the Jays will bite on that. If this signing doesn't prevent us from making the other moves we need to make, then perfect. If this is it, then I would have much rather kept the pick and spread the money out towards other needs.
  8. Very interesting article. Thanks for posting.
  9. Maybe if we could get tercet on board we'd really have something brewing.
  10. Brilliant. Hope I don't get banned for saying so.
  11. God those uniforms were pitiful.
  12. I'd say a half-gallon of lube ought to do the trick, unless a guy like Upton is seriously packing.
  13. I liked Cecil but 4 years is gross.
  14. Same as Encarnacion, but change MPH to KM/H.
  15. Cleveland now. If it's Boston, that means they've just come back from down 2-0 to win the series. I wouldn't like the idea of Boston rolling in with a full head of steam.
  16. Won't get canned obviously, but the call and rationale were beyond stupid. You have literally the best pitcher in the world at getting a small quantity outs. A situation arises where you need a small quantity of outs, and you choose not to use him. When we were watching last night, we made the comparison to jumping out of a plane, but choosing not to use your parachute because you don't have a backup chute.
  17. When a guy can put up an OBP of .500 for weeks and weeks, it's hard not to achieve a major stiffy (no homo).
  18. He's like the Michael Scott of Sportsnet.
  19. Oh my god, can someone please replace Barry Davis? He is the absolute worst. It's painful to watch how awkward he is during those interviews.
  20. He'd be decent if he was used as a LOOGY only. Gibbons seems to love letting him face multiple batters though. I'd like to see him back for September/playoffs if used in the right role.
  21. Not 100% correct, it depends on how close to home plate you release the ball. I remember reading that David Robertson's effective velocity was higher because he releases the ball closer to home plate than other pitchers, and he's not a tall guy. If you have a long stride, release the ball further out than up, or have long arms, your effective velocity will be higher.
  22. I'd be tempted to put Estrada above Eddy at this point right now. Every team could use a SP, but not everyone has room for a DH/1B. Plus the extra year of control on Estrada is definitely worth something.
  23. Parades is a turd, but I like that management is sitting goins against a RHP. I think that's a good sign that Goins might be gone once Travis comes back. Nothing against him, but Goins is useless if he can't hit any pitching even a little.
  24. It would be some f***ing nice (and very easy) to have a 4th OF that was a RHH for situations exactly like this.
  25. Why even have bench players in the first place if you're not going to use them? They bring the LOOGY, and you bring in the RH bats off the bench. It's literally one of the only things a manager needs to do during the course of the game.
