  1. Insanely good move. At worst it looked like a low risk, low reward move at the time. Could not have worked out better.
  2. Yeah it's hard to complain too hard about maybe not sucking. I wish I could have taken a bigger step forward than merely out of the lottery though. That was my hope but my team lacks depth and my drafting has gone from a strength to a weakness which is worrisome for a team in my position.
  3. Not sure how I've done it but it seems like despite very passive roster and lineup management, I've played myself out of a lottery position.
  4. I don't think it really takes anything away from Happ to not want to give him the Cy. If anything there's tremendous enthusiam about Happ and the Happ signing all across this board. This seems Gruber level thin skinned but maybe you're trying to be funny and I'm missing the humour?
  5. This isn't all that relevant to your post but I really feel like Fangraphs and BP should undergo some kind of merger. Fangraphs has a snazzy looking site with a workable interface but they could use a better, deeper pool of writers. BP on the other hand is a good content mill but they are unable or unwilling to upgrade a very dated looking interface. They would have to come to terms on some of the statistical divides but I think it would potentially be beneficial to all involved and the stats community in general.
  6. Poor man's Demond Jennings. Decent at a bunch of things, doesn't really excel at anything.
  7. O.K. I can't find the article dismissing xFIP. I think it might have just been a passing comment by Tango or something. I did dig up this really fascinating article about pitching metrics: http://www.hardballtimes.com/fip-in-context/ It's way more complex and thorough than I remembered but it's a really fascinating read. I wonder how the work he suggests at the end has progressed. I could see someone like North doing a really good job following up on this. He seems to have a kind of mental focus that I really wish I had.
  8. Pretty grateful to NJH for giving me a chance to flat out bail on Puig.
  9. Nice. Agreed on all counts.
  10. FFS, let him have it.
  11. Jan Smithers was underrated.
  12. I don't think he'll ever be a good hitter for average. He could potentially draw walks, play good defense and provide value in other wise but I've never really anticipated him being a good hitter for average. How well he fields is really critical to his value right now. The early reviews about his defense were glowing and he looked good in what little I saw of him in AA but more recent reports have poured cold water on that. Seems like his defensive instincts are still a work in progress according to more recent reports though I don't have to tell you or anyone else that defensive reports are fickle at the best of times. We've seen guys like Pillar, Travis and Gomes outperform defensive expectations.
  13. That's a fair assumption but whatever xFIP is doing to adjust for that doesn't seems to be working and instead seems to be steering people even further from the truth. I'll see if I can dig up the article I'm thinking of. It was very interesting and I'm surprised it didn't gain more traction.
  14. Unbelievable how little residual appreciation there is for the guy. I mean it's partly his own fault for his gross mishandling of his off season contract negotiations but his blustery posturing wasn't worse than what many other players have done in his situation and for it to undo 8 great seasons culminating in one of the franchise's most iconic moments is gross.
  15. Guys like McGowan (sic) really benefit from not being too knowledgeable. Makes it easier for uninformed listeners to relate to them and it makes it easier for them to go off on random tangents if they don't have the best information at their disposal. It's good for the brand. To some extent, I think it might even be somewhat disingenuous and willful ignorance because he seems smarter than how he's acting. When I started to notice the extent to which he would willfully ignore what more informed people than him were saying, I started to feel like the whole thing was just a staged farce full of false outrage and bluster and tuned him out. The funny thing, he's not even close to being the worst sports broadcaster. Guys like Tim and Sid make him sound like Einstein.
  16. There's something endearing about the straight-forward honesty of this statement.
  17. Wasn't it established like 2-3 years ago that xFIP was actually worse than FIP?
  18. That wasn't his point at all though. He's saying that EVEN if he did, he might not get in. He can't really be considered as having much more that an outside chance at the hall right now. He needs a lot to go right.
  19. Yeah hopefully. I'm definitely in favour of it. I don't personally give at rat's ass about the HOF but it means a lot the players and it sucks for the deserving players that don't get in. One thing that I forgot to mention is that I think Rolen might be perceived negatively by the press. The way he lifted his nose at the Phillies was very controversial at the time and was bad for his reputation and from what I understand he didn't leave the Cards on the best of terms. Dude played hard on the field and that's all that should matter but I feel like there's a bit of career drama that might play against him. I don't get the impression that there's a groundswell of support for him outside of the nerd set. I think what GP said is fair.
  20. It wouldn't be easy to replace his bat at any position but he provides way more defensive value as a 2B. It would be absurd to move him away from 2B as long as he's average to above average defensively. So "in his future" could mean a long time from now unless you assume a rapid defensive decline. Not sure why Jonn is bringing it up though unless he's assuming a rapid decline which I don't think is reasonable as more than a hunch.
  21. I'm skeptical... Third Baseman have a really tough time making the Hall. As corner infielders, they get lumped in with the other offensive positions and the bar tends to get set higher than it should be considering their defensive value. At 300 homeruns and 2000 hits, he's well short of the offensive threshold that would guarantee entry. For him to get in, the voting pool has to evolve to to be more in line with modern valuations. Obviously that's already happening to some extent but it's a slow process of turnover that's bound to be somewhat behind on the times.
  22. I think there's more to it than that. I suspect it's also related to how being rushed last year affected him. They're not going to let him flounder at the majors again even in a small sample. I wouldn't be surprised if he was left off the September roster. They want him to play like a major leaguer and only THEN get another shot.
