  1. He's the whiz defender that Goins is commonly assumed to be. He's about the same player offensively too and just like the middle infielders AA brought in last year, he doesn't have an exploitable platoon split. This seems destined to happen.
  2. It's hard to put a value on keeping key players happy but it's probably not worthless. When it comes to lineup spots, Bill James is of the opinion that the optimal lineup just doesn't make enough of a difference to be worth any pushback. When it comes to position changes, it's probably much more worthwhile but the way to handle it is to make sure all your players know in advance that nothing is in stone. There should never be any guarantees. It's wishful thinking to believe that things like that are going to suddenly make Toronto a more attractive destination for players.
  3. It's exactly the kind of move the Jays should be doing, moves that improve the team's chances of winning but whose long term impact is manageable. Hopefully, there's some actual payroll space in order to do such a thing.
  4. Not only will AA not sign a Boras client but I can't see him making the decision to move Reyes to 2B either. Someone who hesitates to trade Jeff Mathis out of a displaced sense of loyatly doesn't ask his star shortstop to change position.
  5. I loved Hutch as a prospect and was glad to see him continue his success in the majors but I'm not comfortable assuming he will just pick up where he left off as it were. He's a nice guy to have for depth but I think it's best to keep expectations modest.
  6. Blue Jays-Official Verified account‏@BlueJays For those of you asking....Due to a scheduling conflict, Colby Rasmus can no longer attend the @BlueJays @TD_Canada #WinterTour.
  7. Yep. AA's so far tepid off-season does not scream desperation.
  8. I don't have a top 10 pick. Best I could do is 17 for 18.
  9. Damn that's a good idea. Chris could cover it for the blog.

Nice win by the Eagles but it's f***ed up that the Saints have to play them on the road next week. Divisions are stupid.
  11. The length is part of the charm. If you're going to take down a dumb ass like Towers might as well be as intelectual as possible. The length and the pseudo-scientific tone add a whole extra layer that makes the piece even better.
  12. Too busy too look into it right now but not uninterested.
  13. Fernandez and Blackburn were good. Everything else meh.
  14. I thought the cat in my photo gave it away.
  15. Jeb Lund has been absolutely killing everything he's been writing lately. This one is about the surreal job hunting landscape at the winter meetings. http://www.sbnation.com/2013/12/23/5230042/job-hunting-at-mlb-winter-meetings
  16. If Deck has Ricky Romero's career, we should all be dancing in the streets.
  17. JPR was negatively effected by hedging. When the dollar got stronger the Jays weren't able to benefit right away.
  18. Mozeliak then Friedman then Beane are a clear top 3 for me and it's a bit muddled after that. Daniels would have been a clear choice for number 4 at one point but Huntington had the best off-season of anyone last year and Daniels may be backing the Rangers into a bit of a corner with recent payroll commitments. Huntington seems like a real master of the small moves, adding wins without making big sacrifices. Jocketty and Hoyer are easy guys to overlook especially in a NL central that's crowded with smart front-offices but the Reds have been putting good teams together for awhile and the Cubs good get scrary good in the near future. Heck even Melvin isn't so bad, the Brewers were at the forefront of the defensive shift movement and managed to get better than expected run prevention from bad defensive teams by doing it.
  19. And yet you voted for Nolin.
  20. I have no problem with the Spanky ban myself. A little humour is fine but pages and pages of dick measuring contests (sometimes literal) is tedious as f***. You gave him more than fair warning but there's only so much you can do when someone has gone off the rails.
  21. Nice job with the arbitrary end points, he failed to reach 90 IP exactly once in the last four years and if you're going to play arbitrary endpoints with Morrow you should do the same with Pineda who averaged OIP over those same two years. Pineda had one good season in 2011, 171 IP with 3.53 xFIP. Morrow that same season, 179,1 IP with a 3.53 xFIP. The fact is if they are both healthly it's probably a wash and Morrow's health concerns do not trump Pineda's by any stretch of the imagination.
  22. I'd like to see some relievers flipped right now before taking on relievers to flip later.
  23. What kills me about Kev is his vitriol for AA. Like you said he's a "benefit of the doubt guy" so it's truly impressive just how far past exasperated he is. Even banal stuff like adding Nickeas to the 40 man gets him going.
  24. They should. Scoop isn't exactly a can't miss prospect.
