  1. If someone comes in and antogonizes people right off the bat, I don't see why we should care what message we are sending to a person that is probably undesirable in the first place but I honestly don't want to argue this with you because I think it probably comes down to different world views. I think blindly following rules make people do really dumb counter-productive things and I would prefer a system that give mods more freedom even if that means they may make mistakes or appear inconsistent but that's just me. I'm not interested in being argumentative or unsuportive. I wanted to express my point of view and I'm satisfied that I did.
  2. I understand this but don't agree with it. Context matters. Who is posting and in what context matters. I don't think hard and fast rules is what works best to foster a community but that being said I truly appreciate any effort to improve the board, misguided or not. We have a good group here and I would hate to see people bail at the first signs of growing pains
  3. After I posted, I wondered if it wasn't something like that. I don't have a problem with gsnarls banning someone popular just to show that he's serious but the length was excessive and the gesture is meaningless unless he puts the hammer down on some real problem posters. Edit: Posted before I read admin's comment.
  4. Was NJH's username always in red letters? I thought that was kind of odd and at first I thought it was another NJH that was being banned. The posts didn't strike me as especially NJH like.
  5. No. lol. My father was a judge so I guess it's in my DNA.
  6. I don't know NJH that well but he basically dared a mod to ban him so hopefully he took it all in stride. As a symbolic gesture, it's not such a bad idea for mods to throw their weight around but a five day suspension is underserved and bad for the board. Here's a question... Would it really be so bad if the mods played favorites with the ban hammer? If posters are attracting a lot of complaints shouldn't moderators be empowered to deal with the situation however they see fit rather than wait for an arbitrary line to be crossed? This isn't a court of law, no one is entitled to due process. I wouldn't have an issue with a board that bans people based on a subjective evaluation of the general value of their content rather then on isolated incidents. There's no reason to sacrifice the quality of the board for some platonic ideal of fairness.
  7. Well imagine that, a team might look to improve by signing a position player when they can't get the pitching they want. It's almost as if the goal is to add wins not a particular type of player.
  8. JP had to give up his franchise player (Delgado) for nothing because of a no-trade clause and a (legitimate) fear he would accept arb. AA was able to replenish his farm on the Halladay trade. JP couldn't go over slot in his drafts; AA has had carte blanche. JP had less money to work and didn't have the same opportunities to replenish the farm that AA did and in spite of all this, JP fielded better teams. This is a no brainer for me.
  9. Oh they were bad but they also stuck to slot which limits your options considerably.
  10. I wouldn't mind bringing back Loewen for depth at Buffalo.
  11. There's some interesting discussion in the comments as well.
  12. Isn't Chuck LaMar part of AA's brain trust?
  13. I'm just going by his mediocre success in a second rate Japanese league. He's at very best a work in progress.
  14. Maybe he has an offer from Seattle in his back pocket.
  15. Ohka is not in the running. He's not even a good knuckleballer but he will give Jimenez some valuable practice catching it which is the only reason he'll be around.
  16. Trade f'in Sanchez already. He's about to get passed by a bunch of guys in the system anyways. Trade him while he still has "upside". AA kept the wrong pitching prospect, admit the mistake and move on.
  17. Well he did DFA him in June of 2010 actually but no one picked him up. He then was picked up on waivers in the off-season by the Athletics who later non-tendered him making him a free agent. That's when AA signed him for a fraction of what he was making before with a club option and eventually an extension.
  18. AA didn't ineherit EE. That contract had run out. He signed him as a free agent. Easily the best free agent signing of his tenure, maybe best move period.
  19. J.A. Happ career high IP 166, Samaradzija last year 213.2 IP.
  20. At 26, he'd better be.
  21. To put it differently... Do I think Harper can be as good as Miguel Cabrera? Perhaps you do but I don't so I'm not passing on Cabrera to draft Harper. I'm going to worry about putting the best team on the field today not whether I still have control on Harper fifteen years from now. Edit: I'm also not inclined to view what Harper is doing now as a great floor but more a case of a player who is going to hit his ceiling early. I don't know how strong the case really is for projecting improvement on someone who starts this good. I certainly wouldn't project improvement on Trout so I'm not sure why I would project it on Harper.
  22. Don't get me wrong, he's good but I think it's a mistake to project big improvement because of his youth. I'd draft him for the player he is not the mythical player he was touted as (which Trout turned out to actually be).
  23. Matt Stairs played for the Fredericton Royals in the New Brunswick Senior League this year. He wasn't even the best hitter on the team.
  24. What's so amazing about Harper exactly? I mean sure he's young but should that justify passing over better player like McCutchen or even Miguel Cabrera? Trout is a no brainer at 1 because he's good and young but after him, I would look at youth as a tie-breaker not the end all and be all.
