  1. I agree with this. It's a shame that we don't have an existing framework for it but not having one shouldn't prevent us from making one up on the fly. Let's just be careful not to create a loophole whereby someone can leverage the death of a minor prospect for gain.
  2. Seems like the kind of guy who might do a lot of damage in the short term, similar to the way Hideo Nomo and Dontrelle Willis dominated briefly with funky deliveries. If the terms are right (i.e. brief and reasonable), I'd love to rope him up.
  3. The cities demands seem perfectly reasonable but sports team are never reasonable when dealing with Governments. Governments are just marks for them. The Rays are obviously just using Montreal for leverage in this negotiation.
  4. Except that they didn't let him go. As far as we known, the Jays weren't pursuing other options. He wasn't happy with the way negotiations were going and he shopped his services. I'd really like to know how unreasonable his demands really were. Apparently, he wasn't so unreasonable that he couldn't find agreement with another team (and not an especially spend crazy team either). This just seems silly. If you like Seitzer enough to pursue him, if he's the guy you want in the position, just lock him up already. I really have a hard time believing the money was that outrageous.
  5. I find it odd that the Jays didn't just give him what he wants. It's weird that they were willing to fire Mottola for this guy but not willing to commit to him long term. How much money does a hitting coach make? It can't be that much.
  6. Yeah he's replaceable but I'm sure the Jays can't be too thrilled with this. Seitzeir was supposed to have a good relationship with Gibby. They no doubt expected him to stick around.
  7. I don't think he was. Must have quit to take this.
  8. The Canadian dollar is stronger now than it was but otherwise the situation in Montreal hasn't really improved. There still won't be enough support for a downtown stadium and the much maligned one they do have is now ten years older. More importantly, the average Montrealer has had 10 years to realize that he or she doesn't really miss The Expos. Despite all this, it's still probably a better market than Saint-Pete (but not necessarily a better one than Tampa).
  9. It will be the Reds this time. Hopefully Votto will in the lineups for the Toronto folk making the trip.
  10. Happy 22nd Birthday to Dwight Smith! I just noticed that he was born on this day in 1992.
  11. The Expos are a pretty good name. Expo 67 is still fondly regarded as Montreal's glory period and of course the name plays well in both languages. Maybe they could find a name that speaks to a younger generation but I have no idea what that could be. Finding something bilingual that fits the bill is a tall order and an English only name would be commercial suicide.
  12. It's a far more accessible stadium than the Trop which is what makes it superior. I haven't been to the Trop but Both are domes so I doubt the fan experience is much different so even if you assume the Trop is a more pleasant dome than the Big O, I can't see the difference negating the huge accessibility edge that the O has.
  13. I was in attendance for both games. Even met GSnarls when I was there. I left Montreal with less faith in its baseball future than I had going in. These games should have been sellouts and they weren't. I also got the distinct impression from the crowd that the fan base has not kept up with baseball at all. Only Bautista got any crowd reaction and most just seemed to be there to bask in nostalgia for Gary Carter or whoever.
  14. There is no eagerness to finance a downtown stadium in Montreal. They got burned by the Big O and a reluctance to get burned again trumps any attachment to The Expos by a large margin. If they are tons of baseball fans in Montreal why did they fail to sell out the first baseball games there in a decade? You would think these tons of baseball fans would be chomping at the bit to make a show of their support for baseball. There's nothing to be done in Montreal. The stadium is bad, to an extent, but it's not as big a factor as people make it out to be. It's not right downtown but it's still right in the middle of the island and easily accessible by public transportation. It's a much better stadium than the Trop. The real problem is that's it's not a great baseball market and the commitment to The Expos both by the public and by public officials is soft.
  15. They were in trouble before Loria. In fact they were naive to think he would save the franchise. He pretty much did the opposite but that doesn't change the fact that the franchise was already in need of saving. Loria is a convenient scapegoat. Blamin him ignores a lot of the problems with the situation in Montreal.
  16. If the commitment is short, probably Melky.
  17. Yes and that's EXACTLY why I used the word "theoretically".
  18. Yes but it's not like the Jays have to spend their money on him. At least theoretically, they can pocket the pick and spend money somewhere else.
  19. Reminds me of anecdotes Voros McCracken told about his time in baseball. He basically spent his time in baseball staring at a blank screen waiting for the next idea to come. You can't just give a guy money and expect him to come up with the next FIP. An ingisht like that is just something that sort of happens. You can't just pump those out on command and you're absolutely right that it's just as likely to come from an unknow than from someone who has already had their moment and has been scooped up.
  20. Walker is a native of Pittsburgh and an extremely popular Pirate. Trading him would be very unpopular and it would just create another hole. He probably stays put.
  21. I feel like he might be on to something but he just kind of hinted at an argument that he never really fleshed out. I guess what he's saying is that whatever market inefficiencies are being found right now are being closely guarded and not shared and that means that the market isn't rewarding players properly but that's ******** really. Look at framing data. It's all right there in the open and the market still hasn't adjusted so we have evidence that even when analytics are freely shared market inefficiencies are slow to be corrected. There are obviously lots of competing mentalities still at play in baseball. We also don't really have evidence that front offices are hoarding secrets the way the author suggests.
  22. Something about that article doesn't quite jive but I can't put my finger on it. Maybe I need to sleep on it.

  24. I'm surprised that no one has yet mentioned Biggio and the rare C to 2B transition he made (someone did mention 2B without mentionning Biggio earlier though).
  25. Your loss.
