  1. Looking at who the Jays drafted in 2014, Pentecost is probably the only player who is old enough and high profile enough. If he hadn't injured himself and had been able to establish himself last year, he might have put himself in the discussion but that was before the Martin signing and even without Martin it would have been a longshot because Navarro would not have been an easy hurdle to clear. As it stands now, with Martin signed long term, there's just no reason not to take their time with Pentecost. http://toronto.bluejays.mlb.com/team/draft.jsp?c_id=tor
  2. I don't see Pentecost being added to the 40 man. If Navarro is traded, backup catcher will come down to Thole or Jimenez with the later being the dark horse but since they both have options, the opportunity to steal the job shoud theoretically be there. Pentecost needs to rehab his injury and work his way up to the high minors before even getting consideration. I think the best place to look for long shots is among the non-roster invitees: http://mlb.mlb.com/team/roster_nri.jsp?c_id=tor I'd say the most realistic long shots would be some of the pitchers. I really like Infante myself.
  3. Special delivery! Package for Deadpool. http://www.veteranstoday.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/04/blog_candy-320x224.jpg
  4. Oh man, I had completely forgotten about Wild-T. I haven't come across his name in ages.
  5. Kind of reminiscent of the Scott Richmond story. He'd be very lucky to make the majors like Richmond eventually did but if he does well, he might land some national team gigs and those seem like great fun especially for someone who had basically abandonned baseball.
  6. I think this could very well be the of the AA honeymoon for a lot of casual fans if things go poorly. People were willing to forgive 2013 because AA brought in a lot of name players and it "just didn't work out" but they won't as be forgiving this time around. If the team doesn't win, they'll say it's because AA didn't bring back Melky Cabrera or Casey Janssen and traded away guys like Adam Lind, Brett Lawrie and J.A. Happ.
  7. Any chance he's actually 16? (Not that I wouldn't take the beastly power anyways.)
  8. A reliever would be more immediately helpful but Lobstein has options so that could work too.
  9. AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAL-burquerque.
  10. Tolleson is out of options so maybe they do go with that pairing. It would work better than Tolleson/Izturis. Of course, Travis running away with the job would be ideal and make it easy to part ways with some guys but if that doesn't happen there are some interesting time share possibilities such as Tolleson/Goins, Tolleson/Kawasaki or maybe even the double swith hitter combination of Izturis/Santiago.
  11. I could live with that actually especially if they use some accurate measures for once instead of just pulling stuff out of their ass. Sadly, what I think will actually happen is that Buck and Pat will was poetic about his leadership for entire games. (To be clear, it's not that I don't believe in the leadership qualities of Martin and others but I think it's a lazy trope for a broadcaster to latch on to and a terrible angle for "analysis". It's mostly just an excuse to spew clichés.).

Soccer also occurred to me as another bad one. It's not that there's necessarily a lot of penalties but with how low scoring it is, the penalties can easily decide a game, not to mention the more subtle influence that decisions made or not made on free kicks have on the flow of the game.
  13. They seem to really have a thing for "name" talent like Kemp.
  14. If you believe in Greg Bird than you fully expect him to climb up the prospects lists within a year anyways so why hold back or try to acquire someone else just because what you're convinced will happen anyways just hasn't happened at this time? Just f***in' go with it. Who's to say that a year from Rodon and Bird won't be valued pretty much exactly the same at which point Boxy's trade won't even be available to him.
  15. Yeah that's the catch. Otherwise, I like it for Boxy. I really like Blackburn myself and I know how much he likes Bird and I like that he went with his gut and got the players he wanted and didn't worry about theoretical trade value (which rarely lines up with reality anyways).

It seems like the refs have more influence on basketball than any other of the major sports. It's one of its frustrating aspects.
  17. Can I down vote your post?
  18. Yeah I'd say the decision to not give him a roster spot hab been vindicated but it was a little weird considering the extent to which they went to give opportunities to McGowan.
  19. That's quite the false dichotomy but I do agree that this isn't a big deal. As discipline goes, it's pretty tame and a lot more amusing than harmful.
  20. Pleasant surprise. He showed real promise. IIRC, Hurl was pretty upset that the Jays let him go but looks like he boomeranged back to them at no cost.
  21. I wouldn't mind the whole putting him in the rotation until his arm falls off approach. He shouldn't cost that much anyways.
  22. Didn't he flat out announce that he wasn't signing?
  23. The future is full of hypotheticals and really hard to plan out effectively. Within reason, sacrificing some future flexibility to make moves that help you win now is perfectly sensible.

Jeezus. WTF? Are the Raptors analytics averse or something or is this just Casey having his own agenda?
