    So minor that it's not worth the risk of a perceived slight to a veteran player. Not that I think Russell would ever make anything of it but I get that there's a locker room culture based argument for making the new guy earn it.

    I don't think this is really fair to Atkins. He projected a lot of playing time for Pearce.

    You can't assume that Castro would have turned out better handled differently but you certainly can't assume that he wouldn't have either not unless you want to flat out dismiss the concept of player development. That being said, The Rockies are the ones who really erred here not the Jays. After his failed and rushed audition, there was no reason he couldn't have been put back on the development track he was on previously. I never understood why the Rockies plopped him in their MLB bullpen repeating a move that had just backfired on the Jays.

    That would make sense but it's not how Gibby manages. He's all about the designated inning and role. I fully expect Grilli to be used like a capital C Closer.

    I'm just going to go ahead and be the big homer/optimist and say the Jays make the World Series. Do they have the strongest case on paper? Probably not. Can I imagine a realistic scenario where it does happen? Sure and given the relative futility of making baseball predictions in the first place, I'll just run with it.     I get the impression from reading between the lines of the posted article and from some of the other post that the real prank was making people believe he had s*** in the chili. The potential health hazards from s***ing in someone's food would be through the roof. I have a hard time believing that he actually got away with that.

    That he felt it necessary to issue that ultimatum suggests that he was at least as interesting of a draft prospect as a pitcher.

    What's weird is trying to consolidate this information with how the team seems to value him. He's not a good hitter or a good fielder. He does have great raw power but surely the team is aware of his track record of failing to convert that into results and the underlying factors that cause that. The only explanation I can see is that there's greater value in his ability to field other player's throw that any one of us can accurately measure at the moment because it's not just Smoak. There seems to be a shift away from statuesque power hitter and towards a different kind of 1B that's happening across the game. It echoes to how catcher valuations changed when pitch framing was better captured. Teams seem to have some sort of insight into a 1B's impact on run prevention that's greater than what was previously understood. That's my pet theory anyways.

    I almost made this exact same post and than I thought about how he's managed to sort of retro-actively justify his popularity with some of his recent stuff and walked it back in my mind.

    Refsnyder can't field for s***. The Yankess have pretty much given up on him.

    Frankly even if he were adjusted for inflation Mike Cameron, they should be super thrilled. Mike Cameron was a 5 win player in his prime and Alford was a major project/longshot prospect. There was a very real chance that his football career would take off and the Jays wouldn't even get a decent look at the guy much less get some real development time. If Football didn't work out, it's certainly wasn't because of the appeal of baseball.

    Regress doesn't mean you get worse. It means you return to the mean. Stroman had a better FIP and XFIP in 2014-2015 than he did in 2016. So regression for him would mean an improvement over 2016. I call that a positive regression even though it's actually just a regression but the word regression has such a negative connotation that I find it clarifying to distinguish a regression going in a positive direction from one going the other way (which is the kind that is being alluded to 95% of the time the word regression gets used.

    IIRC, Fangraphs expected him to provide Devon White like production 15ish homeruns, 30ish SBs, middling OBP and great defense.
